Fruits and Vegetables, A Renewable Food SourceThis is a featured page

Fruits and vegetables are a great food source for after Z-Day. Because a garden is easily set up, and because it easily maintained, humans have been using farming to acquire fruits and vegetables since they started out on Earth. If your plan includes you surviving in your own house then a garden is easily creatable. In my opinion you should cut small holes in your attic/roof of your house, allowing sunlight to filter through, thus using your attic as a garden. Be careful with rain - it might mess with appliances, wood, etc in your house. If you worried about the puncture of your shelter then another option would be to set up a tube system to catch water using cisterns.
if you have waited a bit and have cleared substantial Zeds away from your home then you may be able to conduct a raid on the town. Home Depot is a very good first choice as at this point in time you should have a bit of foodstuffs but quite possibly not enough to barricade your shelter with. Places like Home Depot also carry materials that can be used to get your garden up and running. Remember to try and pick up vegetables like tomatoes and cherries (in seed form) because they produce renewable seeds that are easily to collect. It may be tough but vegetables are a great source of many of the nutrients that humans need and they're also very easily maintainable. While not a huge problem with good ventilation, the oxygen provided by the plants could be beneficial to you.

Dates(the fruit)

have been used for centuries by traders going across the sahara dessert and can last for months to years if stored correctly. very nutrient rich and has alot of protein (i think or vitamins). The pits are large so you can plant some easily.

Apples

nutrious and packed with vitamins, if you have an apple save the seads because if you want to settle down for the long run these babies will help feed you and your friends

Oranges

its almost the ditto of the above and citiris acid can be used to clean items and help your immune system.

Carrots
Good for the eyes, and make a great snack.

Potatoes
Great with a lot of other foods, Can be fried, stewed, mashed, etc. for a wide variety of meals.
In times of the spanish inquisition, prisioners were given a diet of mostly potatoes, because it was a "cursed plant", and when the prisioners died they would go to hell. Turns out the ones inside the jails were HEALTHIER than the ones outside.

Berries
Blueberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Very tasty and healthy. Also very valuable when trading(I would expect).

Mary-Jane(Marijuana)
I know this is controversial, but even if it's banned, this would be extremely valuable to trade for weapons, ammo, foods, etc. I also read somewhere that it can replenish nutrients into the soil(Not sure if this is true).

Wheat
I can't really think of anything this is used for besides flour(which is very useful).

Onions
Keep a long time in the right conditions.

Pumpkins/Squash
Keep Dry. Nutrient Rich.

Beets
Keep moist. Extremely Nutrient Dense. Can be used when shredded to add nutrients to soil.

Quinoa
A grain that is very high in protein.

Corn
Corn is a great crop if you are holding up for a long time. Corn can be eaten raw, boiled or steamed, the husk can also
be used to add fiber to a meal or used like tin foil at lower cooking temperatures (around 180F) also the husk can be
used as toilet paper. Corn adds a lot of nitrogen to the soil which can be great if you want to plant tomatoes the next year
or tobacco or marijuana.

Tomatoes
These little plants can add a lot of variety to your meals and add a good amount of vitamins and minerals. They require little
care after they are planted, you just need to stake them up when they get bigger to stop the limbs from breaking and ruining
your crop. When it is time to harvest them try to make sure none of them hit the ground due to blight. It is common knowledge
that tomatoes are from the Nightshade family of plants which make them deadly to humans and animals, so if you have small
children or animals around keep them away from this plant.

Peppers
Almost all types of peppers are a no hassle crop that can add pardon the pun "spice" to your food and it's great as a de-wormer.

http://www.buzzle.com/articles/alphabetical-list-of-vegetables.html this page can give you a little info about the nutritional.
btw if you want to add anything just change it also add more if you can

Seeds have varied longevity. it is very important to changes the seeds in your survival pack regularly. We never know when the ZA will happen and you need to be prepared with seeds that will last until you are in a position to plant them.
I cannot stress this enough...
Even if you plan to hole up, HAVE A BACKUP PLAN. That includes a survival pack that you can easily grab if your sanctuary becomes compromised.
