Consider this supplementary reading. It is the details of my plan that the Wiki apparently wants me to put.
Part 1: Bugging In
In my scenario, zeds don't reach Seattle for 30 days. However, if the outbreak originates in or near Seattle, I'm sort of screwed. My house has 3 wooden doors, 2 glass doors, and a garage door, which are on both the ground and second floors. That's the disadvantage of being built on a hill. Wood and other building materials are abundant in my house, so boarding up my doors and windows would not be difficult. Another problem is that my main food storage is in a pantry outside of my house, meaning that I'd have to take huge risks in bringing food inside. However, my scenario would be close to ideal. Luckily, 30 days is almost definitely an overestimate, since that's figuring that zeds are going in a straight line and covering 75 miles a day, and they've got to cross 2 mountain ranges to get to me.
I have a comprehensive survival kit packed, which I have checked with Army survival guides to make sure that I've got the right stuff. If I add some food to it, I could survive in the woods for a couple days. I only need a few more things to have a full-fledged Bug Out Bag that would contain the tools necessary for me to survive with zeds. My current survival kit is also in a lightweight firesafe, meaning that I'm not very worried about it breaking. The only things I'm missing are items that I can't leave in a bag because I use them, such as a hammer and nails. I have made a list of everything I need, and have rehearsed my route to get everything.
Here's a (lengthy) bit about my Bug Out Box. It is not a full Bug Out Bag, but I have listed everything else that I need to grab in order to live a comfortable life in the "grab" section below.
IN BAIL OUT BOX (approx. 12”x3.5”x5.5”)
2x Pocketknife
Roll of dimes (for use as a weapon)
$350 in large bills
Chives and coriander seeds
Harmonica
Rain poncho
Emergency blanket
First aid kit
Multi-tool
Binoculars
Matches
2x Earplugs
Dental floss
Matches
Chap stick
Signaling mirror
Trap wire
2x Small flashlights
Hankercheif
Pencil
Purel
Deck of cards
Sunscreen
Mosquito repellant
The following items are “grab” items in that I need to grab them on Z-day. The list may seem long, but I have most of the stuff in handy-dandy piles, so it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to be completely ready. They are sorted into “per person”, “per group”, optional, and required. I plan on timing how long it will take to get all this stuff togeth
GRAB REQUIRED (per person)
Food (10 cans, 5 bars, 3 meal replacement per person)
Silverware (1 fork, 1 spoon (both metal) per person
2 water bottles (both stainless steel)
2 hats (visor and warm)
Leather jacket or other warm jacket
3 pair gloves (leather, light, and warm)
Cleaver/Other primary melee weapon
Sunglasses (sport type preferred)
Jeans (preferably baggy to allow for layering under) or other work pants
Headlamp/flashlight (at least 1 per person, headlamp preferred)
Toilet paper (less if the plan is to use an existing building)
GRAB REQUIRED (per group)
Water purification system
Hammer (can be used as secondary melee weapon for one person)
Duct tape
Lighters (as many as possible)
Cell phone + charger
Pliers (needle-nose and non-needle-nose)
Knife sharpener
Rope
GRAB OPTIONAL (per person)
Extra shoes (any available)
Watch (preferably synchronised ones throughout a group)
Tights (for wearing under jeans, in case of cold conditions)
GRAB OPTIONAL (per group)
Nails (any type)
Axe (hatchet or large)
Bigass lamp
Laptop + charger
Sewing equipment (needle, thread)
Painkillers (bottle)
Pencils/pens (extra, include wood pencil)
Spare guitar string (for strangling and decapitating)
Protein powder
Booze
Saw
Steel rod
Ground pad
As I say many times, I don't own any firearms, and I'm too young to legally acquire any before Z-Day. I have a few plans for getting some, but they probably won't work. However, these are the best weapons that I own now.
Primary melee: Meat cleaver
Secondary melee: Hammer
Tertiary melee: Pocketknife (4" blade)
One of the few advantages of this arsenal is that the weapons are 1-handed, so I might be able to swing a cleaver in one hand and a hammer in the other.
Part 2: Bugging Out
One of the main problems with my plan is that it relies largely on my neighbor's motorcycle. The advantage of using a motorcycle is that, with only a car, you can't get anywhere: the roads will be at a standstill on Z-day. With a motorcycle, it is possible to white line the whole way. Other than being extremely dangerous, it works. A problem is that my neighbor might be smart enough to ride or sell the bike. If I don't acquire it, I'll hole up in my house or a nearby safehouse for a few days, and hope that traffic has died down. In that case, my family will take a Honda Element (an all-around great car, and even better for use against zombies) and a Ford F-250. The two cars will travel as a convoy.
I will take back roads whenever possible, but not neighborhood streets. There'll be plenty of people who will take back roads, making them just like main roads--just with fewer lanes and higher risks of ambushes.
A note that I have to put somewhere: I plan on stealing a little, but only when people don't need whatever I'm taking from them, such as taking guns from dead people or food from empty houses.
Part 3: Digging In
I know which house is preferred (I bought a guitar there), but I'm flexible. I could take over any empty house in the area. It's a good distance from urban civilization, but it isn't too far from places from which supplies can be taken. I plan on posting at least one sniper guard upstairs at windows, and one downstairs at the main entrance. Boarding up ground floor windows and additional entrances, of course, is a must.
If I get really bored and have spare wood, I plan on building a small house on stilts. The stilts will be about ten feet long, and I will go by the official Army carpentry manual. I am in a family of carpenters, and I am no exception. What we lack in heavy weaponry, we make up for in knowledge of buildings. It would be little more than a platform with 3-foot walls and a tarp for a roof, but it would be a sniper's dream. Adding sheet metal to the "walls" would make it a nearly bulletproof guard tower, too. Drawings coming shortly.
Part 4: Living
I have two mental advantages that will make this part relatively easy for me. First, I amemotionallynumb. I have two moods: happy, andthoroughlyuninterested. The most any bad thing has ever done to me is bring me to the "thoroughly uninterested" category, in which my mind becomes void of any human thought and I just go about my daily chores. Second, I am very easy to entertain. While most kids were putting bugs in jars to make them fight, I was perfectly happy just running around. If there are zombies, I can entertain myself very easily and very beneficially, by gardening, practicing with weapons, and so on. Also, as described in "Digging In", I am very interested in construction, and building a house-like structure is my idea of a Saturday well spent.
Once I have built the sniper tower, depending on what gun I have acquired, I plan on spending most of my time in it. If I get the safehouse I want, it will have a great view of the mountains, lowering the chances of insanity. Fall City is near the Cascade Mountains, meaning that it is near lots of snow, meaning that the snow melts and creates freshwater streams. These streams would provide plenty of clean water, making it less of an issue to find. Purifying the water isn't even required, although it is risky.
Mypreferredhouse is in the woods. These woods contain wildlife from worms to deer, and everything in between. With proper weapons, it would not be difficult to find enough food for a 5-8 person group.
More stuff
My main problems:
I don't own any guns, bows, crossbows, or any good ranged weapons.
My house is horrible from a defensive standpoint.
My family single-handedly disproves Darwin's law of survival of the fittest. We are not the fittest, and we are surviving. So far, at least.
My advantages:
My neighbors are old and not smart enough to know the tricks to zombie survival, so they'll get killed in the crowd at Wal Mart
I have relatives with personal armories.
My hard drive contains half the army combat guides inexistence, with topics ranging from survival to the operator's manual for the AK-47.
I can run all day, unlike the rest of my family.
I am an expert woodworker.
