Heckler & Koch G36Model: Heckler & Koch G36
Replacing the G3 in German service, the G36 is a high-tech assault rifle with a futuristic silhouette. Designing began in 1990 and it entered service in 1997, with various other countries such as Austria, Latvia, Belgium, Mexico, and Spain adopting it for their special forces groups or regular Army. After the end of the Cold War, the futuristic G11 with its caseless ammunition was no longer needed and HK ended development for the G36. A large amount of the weapon is made from polymer, making it very light and strong. The standard Bundeswehr rifles have a 3x scope on the carrying handle. An interesting feature similar to the SIG SG550 series is studs on the sides of the magazines to allow them to be snapped together.

The G36E, now known as the G36V, is the standard export version with a 1.5x sight. The MG36 is a G36 with a heavy barrel and bipod and is no longer in production. The G36K is a carbine, while the G36C is an even smaller carbine. The G36A2 is a newer upgraded model with the G36C folding stock, a quick-detach red dot sight, an integrated laser switch in the handgrip, and Picatinny rails on the handguard and top of the receiver. The SL8 is a semi-automatic sporting version, with the R8 a straight pull bolt-action rifle available to citizens in the UK. The SL8 has unfortunately ended production in 2010.

Where to find

Unfortunately the SL8 is very pricey, going from $1500 to $2050. While the gun is no longer in production, it only ended less than a year ago and not all rifles have been sold off. The rifle is also in common use around the world, making it a possible scavenge gun in certain countries.

Complexity

The G36 is very similar to other HK designs in being very expensive, but also very reliable and resilient. The use of synthetics makes it tough out in the elements and it can withstand knocks.
