Hansel and Gretel GraffitiThis is a featured page

(I have not been on this site in forever so I don't remember how to link this page to the guide. So please don't rack me for it)

The classic Germanic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel, tells the story of two young children who leave breadcrumbs as a trail marker to help them find their way home while exploring a deep dark forest. Not surprisingly animals eat the crumbs, leaving the children lost and alone. Though their intention was good, their execution was sorely lacking.

When traveling about in a zombie catastrophe, consider carrying spray paint with you to tag anything important. By using a simple code of dots and stripes, you can subtly label the world around you, making it easy to find your way back home, locate potential safe houses, and avoid possible areas of danger. The clear drawback is that spray paint cans rattle, so paint pens and even a paint brush could be used instead. So I would recommend using some less permanent, but silent options:
“Carrying grease pens and/or chalk with you will allow you to mark points of interest for you or other members of your group.”

So basically, just to reiterate, it is a type of communication. Seeing as though any good survivalists should have several rendezvous points set up in the case of getting separated in the wake of a crisis, tagging the area around you is an invaluable way of letting any other members of your team know where you are heading. For example, if you make it to one of your rendezvous points to find no one, wait for x amount of time, then leave a tag with the following information:
  • Your name(handle)
  • Where you are going
  • Where you plan to go after that
  • And what time you left the current area
(This is all I thought off the top. I ask that people please help and add more)
Now, like I said up top, you will want a simple type of code. You wouldn't want every blooddrunk, crazed and infested raider to know where you are going. It doesn't have to be complicated, you're not inventing an entire language here, here just simple code or script that you and your team understands.
And also remember that you may be tagging on rough, uneven, gritty surfaces. So make sure that your symbols are still understandable. Even if partly messed up or smeared. Because an O sure does look like a Q when smeared up a bit. So please take this into account.

Even if you’ve lived in the same town all your life, and believe you know every inch of every building, marking your path is invaluable in a lawless survival situation. When searching large structures, mark the halls you pass along the way, making note of the quickest way to get out. The last thing you want when encountering a gang of zombies or unfriendly humans deep inside a building is to not know exactly where to find the nearest exit. There’s no time to think at a moment like that, and your tagged path will allow you to focus on speed and nothing else. Whether serving as a communication device between loved ones, or for navigation and crisis survival, a versitile tagging tool is an essential part of any good zombie preparedness kit.

So everybody, this is just the GIST of it. I encourage anybody to give there ideas since this subject is very much open to debate.NOTE: Most of this was cited from the ZRS with some of my own additions.

Soviet Prince's .02 cents:
CODES:

Being an intellectual who pursues various things.. i at one point in time, symbolized the english alphabet and numbers. i can and do write in my own code to conceal my own writings occasionally.
Taking the time to write a code is very practical, in both daily life(right now) and in survival mode.

just off the top of my head, i remember creating a code just so me and my gf could pass notes. i taught her every letter by telling her to translate close to 500 words. when she was as good as i, we had good fun, and never had to read aloud a note, it was all encrypted.

In survival mode, you may not need to have an entire alphabet, but rather, a handful of characters to symbolize whatever.
-shelter
-danger
-enemy presence
-zombies/infection
-contaminated food/water
-weapons
-safe food/water
-meeting spots

the list goes on.
these are indiscreet symbols placed in simple plain points.. and only a member of your group can read the meaning.
inside of your group, keep a paper change.. every month or so, or week if you must, change the paper meaning. if triangle means food, next month it means enemy presence.
if one of your people goes missing, immediately change the code!
the symbols cant be painted over, but you can change the paper meaning within your group.

May I recommend Braille. It's an already well developed language, and no non-prepared raider type is likely to understand it.
A single letter can be used for things like:
-Shelter
-Ammo
-Food
-Etc...
As Soviet Prince noted above.

Brail

This sort of thing, Is gonna get you noticed. So unless you plan to share...

DO NOT use arrows to show the way! Arrows could lead to curiosity in potential raiders. Though following it could just as easily lead to their death, would you like to risk sending them towards a safehouse? If you are in an urban area or the sun or stars are covered by thick clouds, relying on the cardinal directions may be hard without compass. Instead, use simple forward, back, left, and right. Rather than using symbols for each, have location on your code stand for the direction. Also, make it relative to how the reader views it. For example, say you come across a marking on the corner of a four way street:

....Z
D.L.
....S

L is your current location, D is your teammate's destination, Z leads to zombies, and S leads to a safehouse. Relative to the way you are facing when you read the code, the street behind you leads to S, to your left leads to D, and the street in front of you leads to zombies.

Also, don't forget to leave a date. It may come in handy if you come across it a code from two months ago. Things may have changed since then, or maybe you changed the code.

Keep in mind that you will more than likely be tagging on gritty or uneven surfaces. Or surfaces that are exposed to the elements. A letter written in braille can easily look completely different if smeared a little or part is rubbed off. If this happens, you partner may very well be heading to an are filled with zombies instead of the safehouse because a little rain smeared the paint.
