Heckler & Koch P7Model: Heckler & Koch P7
The P7 is one of many weapons produced by the venerable Heckler & Koch of Germany. It was revealed to the public for the first time in 1976 as the PSP, designed after the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre by the Black September terrorist group; it was designed to replace the 7.65mm Parabellum sidearms that the police had been using with a harder hitting 9mm one. It was designed, among other requirements, to be fully ambidextrous, safe to carry with a loaded chamber, and be ready to fire instantly. The German Police responded to the competitive bid for the contract by accepting the P7 along with the Walther P5 and SIG P225. The P7 uses a unique gas-delayed blowback action rarely seen outside of this particular gun.

A large variety of pistols have been made, though only the standard P7 remains in production. The P7PT8 is a straight blowback training pistol meant to fire the 9x19mm PT training cartridge and cannot take live ammunition. The P7M13 was an unsuccessful bid by HK to replace the M1911 in US military service and has a 13-round magazine. The P7K3 is a shortened straight blowback pistol that can be rechambered for .380 ACP, .32 ACP, or .22LR. The P7M10 is a variant designed for the American market chambered in .40 S&W with a 10-round magazine.

Where to find

The P7 is popular on the civilian market as a high-end handgun, with a price of $1100-1300 that more than one shooter has considered ridiculous.

Complexity

The P7 can draw some parallels with the Glock in that it is an extremely reliable 9mm handgun with no manual safety features. The large grip safety makes up for the lack of manual safety, though this means trigger discipline is a must when carrying.

Controls

  • Grip Safety: Located on the front of the grip. When the pistol is held properly, this will be depressed and the pistol can be fired.
