Home Depot (and other hardware stores)

I was in Home Depot yesterday looking for 1 1/2 inch drainage plugs and on my way to the checkout stand I realized that, if there was a zombie invasion, I would be in one of the best places. They have everything there from construction barriers to large weapons to plants for food. Many kinds of water purification systems. And in the event you run dry and those good old supplies there is the likely situation where your neighborhood Home Depot is located near other fine establishments. I know mine is located in a strip mall across the street from a Gun Store (Lucky Me) and a Genardi's (The East Coast Safeway).

Pros
- Construction Equipment
- Melee Weapons everywhere

Cons
- Limited food supplies
- Can be a problem depending on entries and exits as in limited or too many
- Limited water

I actually work at a Home Depot, and have thought about such things myself. I work graveyard freight - the weekend being my main work time. There are only 2 people in my store on the weekend nights, so it gets kinda lonely sometimes, and I spent most of the summer doing the outside garden work, so your mind tends to wander to some pretty strange things out there all by yourself. I have often though that, if the world decided to come to a screaming blood-soaked halt via monster rising (zombies or vampires or any other such beasties), that being at work would be a great place. There are garden tools that would be formidable in hand to hand. If you had time, you could board up the entrances with concrete bags (use them like sand bags, only much heavier to move), the emergency exits don't have handles on the outsides, so that would help keep nasties out. There are three main entrances to my store, so that does lead to some problems, but if you piled up heavy materials in front of them, you'd have a good chance of holding off an assault by less than clever attacks for some time. There are four forklifts in my store, so you'd have no problem moving stuff around. As long as you got some propane canisters from out back, that is. The vending machines would supply some food for awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a handgun somewhere in the store, but I wouldn't know for sure (I am not privy to such things, nor do I believe it is any sort of good idea since it is against policy, but people do keep things like that around in odd places). Anyway, it would make an excellent hold out spot. And there is water for the sprinkler system, the mains, the outside irrigation - there is lots of water if it wasn't contaminated or cut off too quickly. All depends on how you go about it. And how many people you are trying to keep safe.
