How To Carry More With Your VehicleThis is a featured page

Okay, so lets say that you only car that you have is a Honda civic and you have 5 passengers. you may be able to carry a days worth of food in the trunk but that's not enough to get you very far. before i continue make sure that you know how to weld and if you don't DO NOT TRY THIS. First off, most people have a little piping in their garages or shops. take that pipe and weld a large square to the roof of your car. now just imagine a 3 dimensional box on top of your car. then simply get cardboard boxes and fill them with items, tape them shut then just put them in the homemade rack. you could also try this on the front hood but only make them about a inch or 2 high so that it doesn't hinder your vision and so you can open the hood later if you car breaks down.for more storage for water or gas weld a pipe on the door out about 1 inch to make sort of a handle. then take gas tanks or gallons of water and tie them to the sides. only do this if you are not in battle because zeds may grab on to them or get blood in them making them unsafe to drink. while you have all or your welding stuff out make some add some safety such as piping welded over the windshield or side windows.
now lets say you have a pickup truck. most pickups these days have a back that is open. that is good and bad. you could put a turret on the back but that would sacrifice valuable space. i suggest getting a pickup that has a top on the back. then you could weld a rack on top then put some cargo in the back. but leave space for 2 guys to snipe out the back of the truck as you make your escape. also if you want to boost the amount of people coming with you, head for a abandoned car. first rip out the seats and weld them to the top of the car. make sure that you weld a bar about 6 inches in front of the seat so the people have something to hold on to when your driving fast. also remember to check the weight capacity before adding cargo to your vehicle.

Of course, too much can still have consequences...
Another novel approach MIGHT be to modify a truck-bed rack into a roof rack; At right, we have an example where the support beams were cut to fit onto the fenders of the vehicle, then a standard roof rack system was used to hold the load stable on the vehicle. While obviously not a perfect answer, this would more than double your effective cargo SPACE, if not weight.

Be careful how you load your car and the number of passengers that you carry, it might be okay on smooth roads, but a bump could dump it all. Make sure that the vehicle that you choose can be safely overloaded a station wagon or a taxi usually have heavier suspension than a standard sedan.

So you're getting ready to get out of Dodge, and you going for somewhere that's defensible and isolated so that it won't attract mobs of Panicked people Before the SHTF or mobs of Zeds after. Is that about right?

Sounds good so far. The only problem is that it doesn't matter how defensible or empty of other people a place is if it won't sustain you. Having a well stocked BOL prepared in advance is ideal, but not everyone has that.

To that end, one thing that you might consider is having a few weeks (or months) worth of food, water, supplies, weapons, etc all preloaded on a utility trailer and ready to go so that, when the sh!t goes down, you just have to hook up the trailer and take all your goods with you. That way you can still try to find a place with the same defensibility and lack of crowds, but you'll also have something to live on in case you have to stay for awhile.

Come to think of it, such a Bug-Out-Trailer might be a good idea for anybody who isn't Bugging-In, but doesn't or can't have a well established and well stocked BOL prepared in advance. Thoughts?

byates Honda Civic Weight Capacity 11 Jun 20 2009, 8:02 PM EDT by Littlejon126

Have you checked the weight capacity of your civic? I just did, it is 850 lbs, with 5 passengers that is 170 lbs per passenger, their weight and their booty. There is a safety margin in the published numbers, but how much overload are you willing to chance? Rough rule of thumb, check the weight rating on the standard tires and add 20%. And, don't drive over rough surfaces, you might break a spring.

Weld a trailer hitch on it and get a small cargo trailer ( 5'Wx6'Lx5'T ), or what ever your car will handle. I have a 20'Lx8'Wx7'T I use with my 18' cube truck. Which gives me almost the same cargo space as a semi.
