The way I see it,a zombie outbreak can possibly happen through:
1.As we all know, the Earth was created hundreds and thousands of years ago and life forms have been evolving since then. So,maybe there was a prehistoric virus that could toughen organisms and drive them insane or something but then the Ice Age came and when microorganisms face cold, they become inactive so the viruses were all frozen into the icebergs. So,if the icebergs collapse, then the virus would be active again and start infecting humans.Sounds unlikely but maybe it's this virus that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? 2.Technology will become extremely advanced in a few more years and mad scientists are always out to find new ways to destroy each other. So,what's the current most powerful weapon in the world?Neuclar missles. So,these scientists just made them more and more powerful and a great neuclar war started.Once, the war finished, the powerful radiation still emmited and infected everyone, mutating them into zombies. 3.Some day, they will go ahead and destroy all the neuclar missles in the world so scientists began to create biological weapons and inject them into soldiers to make each one a modern Superman. One of these weapons were uncomplete but some careless lug or terrorist set it free and infected everyone.

The Mary Celeste? Zombies. Roanoke Colony? Zombies. The Anjikuni eskimo village with no people and empty graves? You guessed it - Zombies. Google "Mass Disappearances", there's a lot of them in history. Actually they're probably not zombie-related. But you never know...

There are several different theorys that fall into two basic catagories and several subcatagories.
The two main catagories are supernatural zombies and infection zombies. Supernatural zombies- i dont really like these theorys considering as they are far more unrealistic in my opinion. There are the black magic zombies or the satan filled zombies just an innumerable amount of these and all of them more unrealistic than the last. I won't go into much detail on these. odss of happening-less than 1/10 The second kind the infection zombies are the ones i consider the most realistic. The infection subcatagories: the Genetically modified virus the mutated virus the alien virus the bacteria the parasite the prion The Genetically modified virus- This can range anywhere from the miracle cure turned bad to the weoponized viruses to the failed supersoldier program. Ex. The I am Legend Virus, Rage Virus from 28 days later. This is not an unlikely scenario viruses are highly mutatable and biowarfare is on the rise. Potential cons to this theory if a government created a supervirus such as these odds are they also created a failsafe vaccine, also the major problem with viruses used in biowarfare in the zombie scenario is they are just too fatal. The rage virus from 28 days later is said to had been manafactured from the ebola virus which is strange considering a that the rage virus wasnt deadly at all and ebola is one of the deadliest viruses known to man. If the government was to create some supervirus and say there failsafes dont work then we have this supervirus out there that only the government knows about that would most likely turn into the typical zombie scenario described in the max brooks books and the 28 days later movies. Odds of happening 7/10

i must comment on konflict's theory. if there really is a zombie virus in the molten belly of our world then we need not worry. no virus, even a zombie one, could withstand the heat and pressure of molten lava. if it could what would be the point of burning the bodies of dead zombies?

Hello, my friends know me as Bronn. I was just talking last night about a "what if" zombies situation. Survival of my people and I is the number one concern. It's good to know that some people are on board with me in this particular idea. I hope to meet new people on line to chat about potential situations.

A Zombie virus has to be a VERY complex virus, but it does not have to "control our minds". The chance of it being developed in nature is minimal, tough a similar virus/bacteria that affects rats in a similar way to what a zombie virus would do it would need to mutate extremely much and fast which bacterias and viruses does not tend to do since they do not have sex and mix genes (DNA). It´s most likely that a human (like me :D) decides to create a "zombie virus". Though the infected would not truly be zombies the effects on the world will be pretty much the same. The biggest problem I see in designing this virus is not to make a human into a blood thirsty monster, that would "just" be to make a virus that disables the part of the brain controlling emotions such as guilt, love etc ( like someone after a lobotomy ) and then make the person feel incredible rage, hate, hunger etc and pump their body full with adrenalin. Then you would have someone wanting to kill more or less everything it sees and here´s where my problem comes in, how do you make them not attack each other making a zombie horde impossible. My first thought was that the zombies should put out a scent that calms them down (not much, but enough to stop the zombie to kill what smells that way), but this would require an extremely complex virus, changing/ adding behaviors to the brain, you would have to find a way to make a virus implant a scent into your brain and an extremely strong (calm) emotion to it so that it takes out the other emotions. This would take years if not decades to develop and I don´t really see who would like to sponsor it and even if you found someone who would (like the army) you would have to keep it extremely secret. An employee might find out what the project is about and realizing that he is compromising the survival of the human raise he would turn to the media and do everything in his power to stop it. Even the military has limits and are humans.

Of the various zombie types, the 28 Days ones are unrealistic, mainly because of the infection time. Even the most virulent strains of ebola take 6 hours to show symptoms, and that is on people with weakened immune systems. An infection/symptom time of seconds is unachievable.
That said, I agree that anything resembling Solanum will most likely be man-made, or a naturally occuring virus/bacteria/parasite altered and enhanced in a lab. Your theory that the zombies would retain their memories is possible, something similar to Warren Ellis' "Blackgas". This suggests that the infection strips away the superego and the ego leaving nothing but the base desires to kill, fuck and feed. Eventually the hunger is the only factor. The idea that they would be agreeing with the infection, possibly being given a different outlook on the world is also similar to David Moody's "Hater", and is possibly the closest idea to a Non-Zombie Zombie.

Dont fall for those VERY unrealistic zombie movies such as Resident evil. It was realistic due to the fact that it was a man made virus unleashed but the zombies lived forever. Dawn of the dead was a very realistic version of a zombie outbreak due to the fact that they were extremly fast but again, they could not die of starvation which blurred the fact that they were once human. These are just examples of many movies that are unrealistic. The one that was totally 100 % realistic was 28 days (weeks) later. The zombie virus was a rabies like virus that started off in wild life and from their, passed on to stupid conservatists. Those scientists kept those monkeys caged up for a reason. The zombies died from lack of food, were extremly fast, and resembled great infectious appearence (red eyes and physical along with mental distortion.) The movie also showed military resistance against the viral outbreak (unlike in resident evil). If you want to see what it would be like in a zombie outbreak, watch the 28 movies.

Did anyone else get the distinct impression that the world-wide outbreak in World War Z started in China? I'm currently forcing my flatmate to read it to see if he gets the same impression.
If, indeed, it did arise from China, why would it have been there? Is it just sheer numbers that give the virus so many chances to jump hosts and mutate in the process? As a backup for this theory, there are more mutated births (deformed/extra body parts) that happen in the most populous countries (China, India, etc) than anywhere else. Would the same rule apply to a virus? Anyone get a diffenert impression of the origin? Any other theories as to why the contagion would have cropped up and grown so enormously in that place (area where you think it started)?

There are many possibilities to how the zombie virus could arise. The most common is that it would arise from a virus such as ebola or rabies, though of the two rabies would be the more likely due to its effect on behavior. Another possibility is it could arise from a artificial retrovirus, which would change the actual dna of the individuals genome of a person, and could cause certain brain functions and other processes to shut down or change rendering the victim in a zombie state.

Viruses tend to be fairly specific in what they do and how they do it. To get a full on zombie with all the different features, wouldn't it be much easier to have 5 different viruses all doing their own few things to add to the overall effect?
Some destroy the myelin sheaths of certain parts of the brain that that allow neurons to pass on information. This could disable our judgment and ability to reason (parts of prefrontal cortex). Some alter the Hypothalamus to produce hormones that alter the blood pressure, hunger levels, and sleep duration. Some virus with a rabies like anger-aggression could occur along with a bacteria that causes excessive sneezing, further spreading the sickness and making it somewhat air born. Possibly the zombie virus could be a symbiotic relationship between multiple viruses and even bacteria.

I think one person some how gets infected one way or another then he bites some one. Now there are 2 those 2 bite another 2 which means there are 4 bite 4 now there's 8 8 bite 8 now there's 16 16 bite 16 now there's 32. And this goes on.

The book by Max Brooks, called the zombie survival guide, says the virus has always been around, but only small, isolated populations of people have ever seen or been attacked by the infected.
I think that a tribe in some area of the rainforest see a zombie and mistake it for a person in need of help. When they try to help, the zombie will bite 1 of them and they will retreat back to the village to get help for the injured friend. After the injured tribesman has turned into the zombie and started wandering around, its loved ones think that he has healed and will run over to hug the zombified tribesman. This may happen to numerous family members and they may not think that the people bitten will soon become zombies. Pretty soon an entire tribe will be infected and zombies will be straying out to the other villages. Then some people from an organisation based in a 1st world country may arrive trying to save the rainforest or something. They do not realise the intent of the tribesman stumbling towards them until 1 is bitten. The bitten might try to seek medical attention at a hospital in a larger village or town, somewhere which has an highway leading through or maybe even a small airport. Once in the hospital the infected might bite some of the medical staff who might then be sent home because of their injury. Then the family of the medical staff are in danger, that whole town gets infected except for a few folk who try to get to a city for safety. What happens if while escaping a survivor gets bitten, what happens if they get on a flight to, lets say, AMERICA. What about if when he falls into the pre-zombie coma on the flight and people think hes just asleep. Then there is a zombie roaming around a plane. Planes don't have many weapons so they may think locking the biter in a toilet, tending to the wounds of the bitten until the plane can be landed safely. Then the bitten are taken to hospital and it happens all over again, in the USA.

It will happen by space probes returning to Earth and spreading a space-borne virus (Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead), a cure for AIDS or diabetes or other horrible disease goes awry (Resident Evil, I Am Legend), or a disease like rabies evolves.
