How to Destroy the Stairs
Everyone tells me this and I have it in my own plan but I never got how to do it. How do you destroy a staircase. I know the obvious answer is to blow it up but how would you do that with regular stairs. And even then with all that explosives how would you not destroy other key defenses? You could also barricade it with a refrigerater but how are you going to get the refigerator(s) or other large objects up the stairs? You could put them on the bottom but they could be easily moved by the undead. Thanks
Andy REDDSON: Well, I would drop a line from the railing above, then run down the stairs, trearing it all out with a sledgehammer, working from ther top down. Be sure to tear out ALL of the stairs, including the walls. Keep the railings, though, they may be useful to strongback your windows.
Realisitcally, you should NEVER tear out your stairs, unless you have a ladder that you can pull up (ROPE LADDER, for example, though a rope ladder you can just cut away at the top; be sure to keep a knife right by the ladder for just this).
NEVER, yeild anything. Hold what you got. If for nothing other, rampaging skin jobs runnign around you house could casue a fire, trapping you inside or forcing you to go out directly into the hordes and thus becoming bait. Hold what you got, becasue once you give up anything you can't get it back. (Fucken Max BROOKES...)
Thrawn5:First of all DO NOT BLOW UP THE STAIRS!!! This is a very dangerous method as you can light your house on fire or not get the job done properly.
Here is what I suggest you do:
Get a sledghammer/axe/maul or anything that is large, heavy, and controllable, start attacking your stairs from the bottom (after devising a way to get back to the top after you are done). You want to make sure that NONE of the staircase is left standing, if you cant get bach up the staircase without the method that you set up earlier you should be good (as long as you are in good shape). If at all possible, raze the stairs compleatly.
Richboy33lb- As Max Brooks says, do NOT try to burn or blow up your stairs. You will likely just burn down your fortress. Take an axe or sledgehammer, as they work best, and walk up the stairs backwards, destroying the stairs in gradual steps. Make sure you have a ladder ready to get back downstairs and all of your supplies get upstairs. Also, have an escape route, such as window that leads you to a section of your roof.

To destroy (de-construct) the average staircase in a modern home isn't that difficult to do. All you need is a razor knife, prybar, crowbar and heavy weight hammer.
First you cut up and remove the carpeting from the staircase's treads, then set the prybar under the tread and hit it with the hammer to drive (wedge) the prybar between the riser and the tread. Once the gap is large enough, set the prybar in the gap and using the crowbars extra leverage, lift the tread off the riser. Repeat as needed, until all treads have been removed. If desired you could then dismantled the risers, but I'm not sure that would be required, as I doubt zed's are co-ordinated enough to climb the risers to the second floor. For safety and security after I removed the risers I'd construct a simple solid wall out of plywood and be done with it. |

A couple of ideals for this staircase. Sheets of plywood along the stair rails, to stop them from bypassing a barricade. Plywood barricade at the foot and top of each section. A hole cut in the upper section to drop them into the cellar(?), fall should break a few bones and slow them down. Barricades should be prepared ahead of time, maybe bookcases, and hole prepared in staircase. A section of the upper staircase could even be hinged to create a hole faster, and an additional barricade. Take off the guard rail on the landing, no need to protect them from falling.
