During a zombie apocalypse the best thing that you can do for yourself when at home is destroy the staircase. People have developed their own style and way to do this. There are some things that you should know before you do this.
1.
DO NOT use explosives or fire. Using explosives or fire to destroy your stair case can and will catch your house on fire, destroying your supplies and injuring, or even worse, killing you in the process.
2.
DO NOT leave your ladder upstairs. This should be common sense, however, I have seen and noted that some people don’t use common sense. If you leave your ladder on the second story and you destroy the stair case what’s going to happen? You will be stuck at the bottom of the stairs with no way up to your supplies.
3.
DO NOT stand on the stairs while you are demolishing them. Gravity plays the factor in this, if you are walking backwards up the stairs while demolishing them you will fall to the ground. This could cause some injuries, the less that you have the better your chance of survival will be.
The best way to destroy your staircase would be as follows:
1.
DO bring all of your supplies up before you start destroying the stairs. This is an easy concept to understand. Bringing your supplies up the stairs before demolition will cause much less hassle and risk of falling. The reason for this is after you destroy the stairs, you will have to climb up a ladder.
2.
DO Use a sledgehammer or axe and start at the bottom and work up. Starting at the bottom and working up is probably the most important and best thing that you can do. This deletes the chance of falling from the stairs while doing the demolition.
3.
DO Save all of the debris from the stairs. The wood and metal bars work great to reinforce the doors and windows. Although you should have done this at the start of the outbreak, having the supplies to do it on the inside will make it easier to patch up the holes the undead may have created in the time that they have surrounded your house. Another possible use for the wood would be to create a door or something of the sort to cover up the opening that lies just above arms reach, if Zombies die and pile up in front of your destroyed stairs, their rotting carcasses will become a more “Natural” version of stairs.
Many people suggest only destroying outside staircases; this however is something that I disagree with. Destroying the interior stairs as well as the external stairs, the logic in this is this, if both sets of stairs are destroyed it leaves the undead no chance of getting to you while you are asleep or injured. Destroying the stairs will make it next to impossible for the undead to get in while also making it harder for you to get in and out of your safe house. The solution to this problem would be to keep a ladder at all points of access.
If the situation allows it would be a good idea to create a pulley system to host your supplies up and into your safe house.
Something else that you can do to better secure your safe house is block off the top of the stairs with ply-wood or other type of building material. You can use the remaining wood and metal. Remember that supplies will be hard, if not impossible, to retrieve; so use and re-use anything possible at any time the situation allows it.
Keeping a weapon at each point on entry is a good idea only if you have extra weapons. The reason for this is if undead mange to break through the barricade and mange to make it to their point of entry in time than having a weapon there will give you an advantage, and you would allow you to know the location of your weapons better.
