my house is made PURELY of concrete and steel, not a single plank of wood can be seen in this structure, so in this case how do i demolish my stairs?
the concrete can be done with using a sledge hammer, my biggest problem is the web of steel in the cinder blocks, it would be too cumbersome cut them all up one by one.. any ideas???

Insted of destroying the stairs, why dont you let zombies not go up? My idea is simple whenever you see that zombies wanna go upstairs take some plywood andplace it all over the stairs, so its flat, if you want to laugh, or simply to feel safer, take some pee or used water and throw it through the stairs.

A Lot of people say that you should destroy a staircase from the top down- i disagree, heres why:
If you start at the top, and say you destroyed the stairs without deploying a ladder, you usually cant get back up. Heres why i think you should start from the bottom up: you can easily smash stairs and get up, think about it! You smash a few stairs, then get up onto the next one that you havent done (with me so far?), then smash the next two or something, then destroy the one you just stood on. Sorry if you dont get me, but its hard to find the right words tonight- im tired...

Your idea is ingenious, except for the fact that the axe is also quite heavy.
good luck with the book :)

i write short stories on facebooks about what my family would do in a zombie survival situation. i've got like 4 chapters. in the very first one we all go to my sister's house which is on stilts and can only be accessed via the flimsy staircase outside, which has only one connecting point to the house. Look for places with this type of staircase to begin with, not some concrete monstrosity (as pictured above). I've always thought that an alternative might be to turn the stairs into a type of slide that the zombies could not get up, then to make an alternate place to go out.
and a good heavy axe is much better than a sledge. don't use a double sided one though, you're just asking to get it stuck in a rail. but with an ax you have a tool and a weapon all in one. so if you need to stop momentarily to axe a Z, no problem. with a sledge, you gotta raise that heavy bastard to hit them in the head, and it's so inaccurate you might miss so yeah, sledge for a show, axe for a pro.

To destroy (de-construct) the average staircase in a modern home isn't that difficult to do. All you need is a razor knife, prybar, crowbar and heavy weight hammer.
First you cut up and remove the carpeting from the staircase's treads, then set the prybar under the tread and hit it with the hammer to drive (wedge) the prybar between the riser and the tread. Once the gap is large enough, set the prybar in the gap and using the crowbars extra leverage, lift the tread off the riser. Repeat as needed, until all treads have been removed. If desired you could then dismantled the risers, but I'm not sure that would be required, as I doubt zed's are co-ordinated enough to climb the risers to the second floor. For safety and security after I removed the risers I'd construct a simple solid wall out of plywood and be done with it.

A couple of ideals for this staircase. Sheets of plywood along the stair rails, to stop them from bypassing a barricade. Plywood barricade at the foot and top of each section. A hole cut in the upper section to drop them into the cellar(?), fall should break a few bones and slow them down. Barricades should be prepared ahead of time, maybe bookcases, and hole prepared in staircase. A section of the upper staircase could even be hinged to create a hole faster, and an additional barricade. Take off the guard rail on the landing, no need to protect them from falling.
