How to organize a base |

Version 26 - view current page

Okay, here's a kind of universal survival plan. When I say universal I don't mean that it should be applied by everyone but it could be applied by almost anyone living near/ in a city. For some it would be better and for other worse, that's for you to decide. It doesn't require you to go to a oil rig or something like that that completely out of the question for many people. I have sorted up the plan into days and steps, so it's more like a schedule. The plan will start with you having nothing except ordinary household items and end with a fully functional base with electricity, water, food and of course shelter. This plan won't work if massive hordes are already wandering around since it relies on you being able to move around in a car and building a shelter without being interrupted be 500 zombies eating on your shoulder. You have to act as quickly as possible.

If you want to edit this page, add details on how you should build things etc you are more then welcome to.

Day 1:
step 1, the escape from the city:
first thing you need to do is to find a camera or video recorder and record some zombies running around being crazy (preferably while they eat someone) this might seem strange to you now, but I ensure you, it will come in handy just a few hours from now. Next thing is to find some good melee weapon and something to break down doors with (what you decide to take is up to you, but I personally would prefer a crowbar for breaking down doors and an axe to kill zombies with (a smaller one). Then you should of course bring a first aid kit, water and some food. Something that would be good for one person in the group to bring is a laptop, since you don't have the time to sit down and look up things right now, because you really need to get going.

step 2, the weapons:
Get a car, doesn't really matter how. Then locate your nearest gun range, preferably one that's a bit outside the city (you do this with the laptop, which I assume have internet). Go there. When you arrive there are four scenarios that could happen.
1 - The zombies could have got there before you did and people are already aware that there are zombies running around.
2 - The people there are unaware of what's going on-
3 - The people are aware of the zombies but there are no zombies there yet. (this would be the best of them).
4 - The gun range is empty.

If the gun range is not in the city I would guess that you would be faced with scenario two, they are unaware. What you have to do now is to convince them that there are zombies out there, and whatever you do, don't call it zombies then it just sounds as a joke. Show them the photos/ video that you recorded earlier and try to explain that it's a rabies kind of virus which makes people attack other people. Just make it believable, a zombie outbreak is something that most people won't believe in the first place. once they understand the situation you ask them for weapons and a brief lesson in how the gun works (if you don't already know that). You tell them that you have to stick together and that they should fill up their cars with ammo. If there's no one at the gun range, just gather as much as you can find.

step 3, security:
Now when you have weapons, if the gun range was not completely empty in which case you should still proceed to this step only without any guns, you have to focus on security. Something that could offer high security even though it's not the first thing that comes into someones mind is a construction place. There are a few conditions that the location must fill though. 1 it has to be outside the inner city, away from any dense populated area 2 the ground must not be made of rock, 3 you have to have a relatively big open field. In my city (Stockholm, Sweden) I found a very good place for this, it's actually where my former school is located. Here are some picture of it.
construction sightconstruction sight 2

Yes, there are houses nearby, but most of them are abandoned (as you can see, there are no lights turned on in the buildings) and now that you've got guns we can shoot the zombies that are coming to eat us, so you are safe as long as you are awake and away from heavily populated areas. Now you have to convince the construction workers how serious the situation really is (if they already aren't aware) everyone should start digging around a house or area where you wish to sleep.

Start small, make a trench that is deep enough so that you can't get up from it (make it about 4 meters) and don't start to dig a trench around the whole construction sight, that would take ages even with an excavator and a truck. Before you actually start digging you have to set everything up and plan out how you safe zone should be. A good thing is to use what is already built (or in this case demolished) and to put it close to smaller building that you later on can move into when you are building this into a base rather then just a kind of temporary safe zone. When you dig the trenches I would suggest that you move the dirt away from the place where you are going to be because you can't see or shoot through a pile of dirt and the zombies can climb over it is not ideal to use as a wall.

Take those walls for example, you could move all the debris around it and use it for protection. The next thing you should do is to park your cars inside the "safe zone", you can sleep in them since they got heat and they can provide you with some electricity and light and most importantly an escape in case you get overrun with zombies. then it's time for the fences to go up (you will find plenty of those in a construction sight). Remember that you can use other things to reinforce the fences, and you will need to do that. Then you need an emergency exit. My suggestion is to make a kind of bridge out of fences, wood and reinforcement bars. When you are done (this will take several hours if not the rest of the day) you would end up with something looking like this:

construction sight protected

Here you can spend the night, but remember to turn off the cars otherwise zombies will hear and see you. One important thing is those concrete blocks in front of the "gate" (the high thing sticking up there, mentioned before as a bridge). Those blocks will have to be placed so that when you give the gate a push it will fall over and make a bridge. They also have to be placed so that the cars wheels can drive up on them. Around the gate you can see that there are 4 reinforcement bars (two on each side) hammered into the ground and that the fences on each side of the gate is not connected to each other with a concrete block, but they should still be connected (with wires or something like that). The reason for this is simply that it should be easier to ram the thing without damaging the car too much.

Now, lets go over the emergency exit and defense plan of this small safe zone.

It's pretty obvious what will happen when a zombie walks in the trench, it will just fall down and it won't be able to get up. But you are still far from safe when you got zombies in the trench. First you need to kill them so that they don't start to dig or climb on top of each other and escapes, secondly if you have too many dead zombies in the trench the living zombies will be able to get out, so even if just one zombie falls into the trench, kill it and then take the excavator and lift the body out of there.

And if you don't happen to have a remote excavator like on the picture someone has to go out and manually dig the body up. Now if you get overrun by zombies you are not trapped and this is very important for this safe zone, because it is not very strong and will only last a couple of minutes if a big zombie horde attacks it. All you really need to do now is to drive out of here, with a little help from the emergency exit you prepared earlier.
escape planescape
Car 1 opens the "gate" by slowly driving into it (so that it does not fall down into the trench, but still falls over). Then car 1 exits the safe zone (which is not safe anymore) followed by car 2. The picture when the gate is open actually taken during a simulation of the escape (which I wanted to upload a video on, but then I have to upload it on youtube first and I didn't want to do that) and the simulation worked beautifully, the gate fell down in just the right place and then the car could pass over, it almost fell in the trench because it couldn't turn, but in real life the driver would have turned. If you feel like you have the time you could test it in advance, risking to destroy one vehicle but it's a risk worth taking since there will be more vehicles around the construction sight. If the car falls down then you could pull it up using the excavator or other vehicles nearby. NOTE: You should only test it if you are certain that the bridge won't collapse, there is still a relatively high risk of someone getting hurt when a 1 ton car crashes in a 4 meter deep hole.

Now lets hope that you don't need to drive away from there the first night (which I don't think that you will need unless you are close to the city). Be a couple of miles away from any dense population. Think like this, a normal human / zombie walks at around 5 km/h (3 mph), then just do the math, in this plan we would like the huge zombie horde to arrive around 3 to 4 days from now, and one day equal 24 hours which would equal 120 km (72 miles) per day. So in our case we would have to be around 360 km (225 miles) from the nearest populated area.

Day 2
Step 1, Water and food:

A human can survive three days without water, so water is a very important thing to sort out as soon as possible, and now is the time for that. Here's another benefit of being at a construction sight, the workers there will know where the water pipes are and you will have access to clean water as long as the water station is still up and running, and even if it's broken there will still be some water left in the pipes, quite a lot if you think about it. water pipe

These pipes are the larger ones that then splits up into smaller ones and goes into buildings. A lot of water can be stored here, but it will not last forever, but it will do for now. Send maybe two people to go and gather some water from the pipes.

What we need to focus on now is food, assuming that the food you brought is starting to run out you have to get more. Locate the nearest food store with the laptop and send one car with three people there (if everyone doesn't have a gun the gun should be shared so that if some zombies comes to the safe zone they will be able to kill it and the group that goes to get food must have a gun since it's almost certain that they will come across at least a couple of zombies.

The people left at the safe zone now have to make it even safer. They could start on a bigger trench surrounding a house and the already dug trench, just remember to make bridges for the vehicles. They could also start setting up traps or a bigger wall around the big trench. Something that you could do is to stick thin but long iron pipes into the trenches so that when a zombie falls into the trench he either dies, gets stuck or looses a body part. You can use the walls from houses surrounding the area to make a wall around the inside of the trench, it's just to tare them down. While you bring a wall down you have to think of a way to transport it (in one piece) so a good thing to do is to lay chains on the ground where the wall is going to lie.

Step 2, more protection:

To bring down a wall is a dangerous thing to do if you don´t have the proper tools. The construction workers might have other tools, but if you only have a excavator, sledgehammer, chains and humans here's one way to do it.
housedemolish roofedges awaychains under wall tilting wall wall down

1- First of all find a wall you want to bring down (without any windows of course).
2- Carefully destroy the roof, make sure not to destroy the wall/ walls.
3- Take away the edges, so that the wall is free and can fall down without causing other things to fall with it and injure the people bringing the wall down.
4- Put chains (or boards/ iron bars which I would prefer so that you can put chains under it later) so that you can move the wall later on.
5- slowly bring the wall down, this is the most dangerous step since there will be people catching the wall and stopping it from falling down and get smashed into pieces. When catching the wall, don't stand too close to it because then you will lose you balance and fall with the wall over you. Stand a few steps away from it so that you can lean towards the wall using your body weight rather then your strength. Also be aware that the wall might break and fall over you or your legs (especially your legs) so always be ready to jump back avoiding the wall if it collapses.
6- chain up the wall and attach the chains to the excavator and lift it out of there or drag it if it cannot lift it.

As mentioned this is a very dangerous thing to do and if you are attempting to do this, talk to someone with experience of brining down walls (like a construction worker). I have only brought down 2 walls and then I just smashed it into pieces, but that won't work here since you need the wall intact. So if you need to do this in real life, be VERY careful and preferably find another machine to catch the wall with.
wall in placedouble wall
When you have the wall where you want it, you can hammer reinforcement bars into the ground on both side of it, protection it from being pulled down or pushed over. When putting up more walls you can make them overlap each other. By doing this you earn one reinforcement bar and the wall becomes stronger. Digging the large trench and putting up walls will take a long time and I would be amazed if you managed to do all of this in one day. At the end of the day your safe zone / base would look something like this (depending on how many people you are building it). The excavators should probably be on the inside of the shelter while digging so that you are safe while digging. When building the first small shelter I suggest that they should be on the outside because then you save space and a lot of time, but when digging the larger trenches you could have them on the inside and trucks on the outside transporting the dirt. You do what suits you best and make sure that you have enough time to get inside the shelter if a zombie horde is approaching.

While building there are a few things you have to keep in mind.
1- don't dig the trench in front of the bridge, as you can see in the picture I left an opening there. When you have dug all the way around the house you can finish with digging the trench in front of the bridge, but remember to build another bridge there too, this one can be a bit more sophisticated with maybe chains to lower the bridge from a safe distance.
2- remember that you have to be able to shoot at the zombies when they come, so build stairs or get ladders to place against the walls so that you can see and shoot over them.
3- always be prepared to execute the evacuate plan, don't let people wander away to get more gas or something by themselves and always keep your bag packed.

begining of base

I still suggest you sleep in the small area that's surrounded by fences but first you have to park the other car there (the one that drove away to get food which is stored in the house (the zombies won't open the refrigerator to look for food so it's safe there). You also have to close the bridge, goodnight.

Day 3
This day you will have to keep building your safe zone/ beginning of a base. Now is also a good time to try and reach other survivors via cellphones or your computer. Just remember that contacting other survivors and telling them where you are might lead a big zombie horde towards you, so you have to be finished with at least the larger trench by the end of this day. You should be able to finish more this day then the last since you don´t have to concern about food or water. So this day you should only spend time on the base, no running away to get electricity or things like that. of course you have to go away to get gas from another vehicle if one of the trucks or excavators runs out of it, but that should not take that much time. A good thing to do this day would be to pour cement (if you have that) in the trenches, on the slope part of course, not to fill it up. if you are faced with a big zombie horde chances are that they get stuck in the trenches and that you shoot everyone that gets up, but the ones in the trench might start digging through the dirt and the walls might fall down into the trenches making a way in for the zombies and we don't want this to happen. If you don't have any cement you could try to cover the sides in the trench with fences (and nail them deep into the ground so that they can't be ripped away from there).

Day 4
If you still have electricity that's a good thing, but in either case you have to start thinking about getting your own electricity if the power goes out. Your shelter should be more then half finished by now so that you can defend it if a larger zombie horde should show up. You still have to continue on your shelter but some people could set up electricity in the house.

Getting electricity:

You can find an alternator, much like a generator but it gives out AC instead of DC current. These can be used to power the house. You have to be very careful while doing this, you wouldn´t want to get 230 volts in you, that really hurts (believe me, it really really does especially in you elbow). What I suggest you do is to take several alternators and hook them up to a single motor (this way you will save petrol and get more electricity). This video shows you briefly how a alternator looks like and how to remove it.

After you have done this you should connect the wires from all the alternators to your house. If there is an electric pole by the house you could hook up the wires to that and your house will get electricity, just make sure you know what you are doing and don't climb up in the pole, look for wires on the ground / the bottom of the pole. Now all you have to do is to get petrol and you have electricity or you can make a wind power plant and steel some solar panels. Electricity will be important when it comes to storing food.

At the end of this day your shelter/ beginning of a base should be almost complete. Most of the walls should be up and you should be prepared for a big zombie horde with up to 50 zombies per "wave".

Day 5
Here the scary part starts, a massive zombie horde could have reached the small town where you are. Now you really need to be on the look out, and gather survivors near by, search through houses, call people you know and use the internet to tell people that they can come. You don't want too many people to be headed your way just yet. Your shelter might be strong but the more people headed towards you, the more zombies will be headed towards you as well (since they would follow people and if a car drives by a zombie horde I'm guessing that the horde will change direction and go the same way the car did (if there's no one else to feed on where they are).

You are probably wondering "What if a zombie horde had come before, your basing this plan on the assumption that there are no zombie hordes nearby" and to that I will answer, yes I am actually basing this plan on that assumption but if a zombie horde had come before you would have driven away to find a relatively safe place to spend the night, then you could return and continue building the shelter. There are no plans with a 100% chance of survival, if you run into a zombie horde with 2000 zombies you're screwed. You never know what is going to happen but this would probably be the best plan for people like me who live relatively close to the city but also close to a gun range and a construction sight could be found almost anywhere and since you got a laptop you can find the best places for you. This plan also assumes that you react fast, you want to be the first person/ group of people arriving at the gun range.

You could send out a small search party to investigate the rest of the town too, but most importantly is that you keep building the shelter bigger and safer. Build sections so that if you face a zombie horde of lets say 500 zombies you can start fighting them off in one section, and fall back into another and keep killing the zombies as they come. the only thing you must have in mind is the emergency exit. You should be able to get out of there even though there are 500 zombies surrounding the place. If you have strengthened the trenches your shelter should be able to resist a lot of zombies now, but if you don't kill them they will sooner or later find their way through so I suggest you start thinking about finding more ammo / guns and start making explosives.

You can build a very simple "fire grenade" (but you won't do this because there are no zombies here) with the following items:
1- Sugar.
2- potassium nitrate.
3- Butane can (any flammable substance in a can will do).

This will make a pretty big boom, I calculated it to be around 3, 4 square meters of fire. My friend tested it (when I was unaware of it) and it really did produce a three meters big fire ball. Here's how you do it.
find a frying pan and pour the sugar and potassium nitrate in there (about 50/50). You don't want to make too much at a time because then it will ignite in the frying pan and you will end up with a lot of smoke. Once you have heated it up it will melt and then it's just to stir it together and you will end up with a brown mess. Now you wait until it hardens a bit and then you put it (while it's still mouldable) on the butane can and duck tape it to the can. Now you have a "fire grenade". When using these you have to be careful, ignite brown substance and then immediately throw it. The thing can blow up 1 second after you have ignited it or after 10, you never know which but if you make a fuse of the brown substance (so that you don't ignite it directly to the can) you know that you will have a few seconds before it melts through the aluminum can. How effective these will be against zombies I don't know. Human skin starts burning at temperatures around 54 degrees C (130 degrees F) but the flesh starts to burn at around 760 degrees C (1,400 degrees F) and I doubt that this 1 second flame will reach those temperatures, but it might ignite the hair and then start burning of the skin on the head and continue from there until the zombie becomes blind or the brain starts to cook. One thing that you could add to this is gasoline, pour it on them from on top of the wall and then throw down either a whole fire grenade or just some burning brown substance (saving the butane gas).

A more effective and dangerous bomb/grenade to make is the nail bomb. This is also a very simple device but a little bit harder to make then the "fire grenade"
bu a lot more powerful. First of all you need some explosives, like gunpowder. If you have fireworks you could take the powder from them otherwise you have to make your own.
  1. The formula for Black Powder is 75% Potassium Nitrate (5 Parts), 15% Charcoal (one Part), and 10% Sulfur (2/3 of 1 Part). These percentages are percentages by weight.
  2. Mill the charcoal and sulfur for 4 hours.
  3. Add the potassium nitrate to the ball mill.
  4. Mill for 24 to 48 hours. The longer the better.
  5. The result is called meal powder.
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Gunpowder

Then you just fill a bottle with the powder, takes some nails and tape them around the bottle and you've got yourself a nail bomb. Just don't do this unless there is a zombie outbreak... It's dangerous and illegal, you shouldn't play with explosives even though it's a lot of fun.

Afterwards
Now you got yourself a working base, but your water will run out so you need to get more, not to talk about the food. Gather rain water but remember to filter it. The best thing to to would be to set up a water cleaner, so that you can take the water from the sea or a lake and drink it. You could also get water from stores and from houses where there is still some water left in the tap, but these are only temporary solutions. Here is a very valuable video I found of a filter that
cleans water. Again, use your laptop to find out where they sell water cleaning devices like this one and go there.

Food will be a bit trickier. If fishing is an alternative then you don't have that much of a problem, the skin of a fish also contains vitamins so it is a good food source. Hunting animals is something that you can do, but I suggest that you empty the food in the food stores and store them in a fridge (or several fridges). Macaronis and other food with a long expiring date should of course be gathered as well. Wheat flour is also a good thing to take. Just take anything that you can store for a longer period of time. You could also start growing potatoes, vegetables and such. Find nearby apple trees or other eatable plants.

More ammo and guns is something that I mentioned before, and you could see if there are any at the local police station or where the nearest gun shop is. Now you got yourself a fully functional base. Let's just hope that it can hold up to those 1000 zombies rising on the horizon... Mine fields would be a good thing maybe? Just make a lot of them, like the nail bombs, but with a trigger. You could use the primer of a cartridge, which causes a small explosion when enough pressure is applied to it, to ignite the gunpowder in the bomb. Put some in the trenches, the blast will clear away some of the zombies so that the living zombies can't climb over the wall (just remember to reinforce the trench so that it can take the blast).

Just remember to extend you base as much as possible, the more space it takes up the safer it will be cause then it will be harder for the zombies to destroy it since they wouldn't just have to get through one or two fences/ walls but maybe 20 to reach you (at this time you would probably have killed them already, otherwise you're screwed).
