Humanity; The journal of a surviving intelligent man. This is a featured page

The year is 2050. Thirteen years ago, a scientist discovered a way to bring back the dead. It was perfect. They could relearn the forgotten memories and knowledge, and even converse with others successfully. But, when one idiot messed with the formula, he started a chain of events that nearly killed humanity.

October 23, 2050.
This is the first page of my journal, to be updated monthly at least. I have been working on preparing my androids for activation. Kelle is a beautiful piece of work, perfect in proportion. Her hair is particularly lovely, the perfect shade of read, with green highlights. Sarana is lovely as well, with soft, green eyes, and a very, very cute face. The youngest of the three, made for my sister, is Thera. Thera is a cute little girl, with bright purple hair. If I have coded them correctly, they should be almost human... And more. My sister, Shali, is silly, but almost as smart as I. She has found some errors that would have made all three into killing machines, thus saving our lives- and countless others. I will try activating Thera first, for if she needs recoding, she should be the easiest to restrain.

October 24, 2050.
It works! Thera is all that she was made to be! Her personality, or at least the three points that were hard-coded, are exactly as they should be! The randomizer for the rest worked as well, although it had to try twice to get a non-psychopathic personality, but that is to be expected of the first try. The others shall be activated later today, and if all goes well, I will have three androids made, the first ever! Although, I think I'll change the proportions on Kelle's body, first. Don't want her to have trouble balancing.

Later:
Kelle and Sarana are activated! They are much more alert than Thera, but that is because of the age I made them at, 18 and 16, respectively. The two hard-coded rules have taken effect: 1: You shall not harm a human being without direct orders from Larethi Wood. 2: You shall protect any human nearby from harm, except under the command of Larethi Wood. Larethi is my name, of course. The only problem I can see is space, my small underground home is not that large, especially considering it is near to what was once a graveyard, before the creation of S2965, the resurrection serum. Such an odd stuff. I would love to get my hands on some of it, to examine it.

October 26 2050.
I have gotten permission from the city to expand my home, for the trade of my research into an unexplored use of S2965. They honestly believe that this was a hard condition to accept. It's an odd thing, opportunity. I'm scheduled as well to speak about my androids to the government, to get it so that I can't have my work taken, although I'm pretty sure Sarana would kill them if they tried to take her, hard-code or not. I will return after my speech.

-My speech-
"The androids that you are about to see are not just robots, but truly sentient, with coding and wiring copied from the human brain itself." I say, as Sarana walks in, followed by Shali, Kelle, and Thera, in that order. Sarana has her lovely hair out, while Kelle has hers in a ponytail. Thera copied my sisters hair, and has it in two ponytails on either side of her head, with another, smaller one in back. My sister is 13, by the way. "This is Sarana, the second one that I activated from the coding bed. The youngest is Thera, who is physically ten years old. The one standing beside me is my best work of body-sculpting, although she wouldn't say so herself. The other is my sister, without whom we would probably be dead by now because of coding errors." Sarana smiles, as do the others. They sit down in the chairs laid out beside me, as I take out the notes on my androids. "The small robot here will hand you these papers, my notes I took while researching. I am sorry to be unable to include the soul matrix schematics, but I am sure you understand why those may not be brought out of my research and experimentation facility." The hover-bot, which I designed myself, hands out the papers. As they look over them, I press a button on the wall to my left, causing a hologram projector to activate. I mess with it for a total of ten seconds, and continue with my speech, "I will explain the process of body-sculpting, which I used to create the body that each of my androids inhabit. Body-sculpting starts with a metal skeleton, I have found that bio-metal works best. Once the skeleton is laid out, you begin adding the processors, soul matrix, and such, adding temporary padding to where it is needed. This is followed by the motor controls, and synthetic muscles and such, as shown on page three, diagram four." One of the people cleared his throat. "Sir? You have a question?"
"Yes, I'm sure most of us already know this, but I must have not been informed. What exactly is the reason that this... 'Soul matrix's' schematics could not be brought here?"
"Sir, until my work is protected, anyone could pick those up at any time, memorize them, and go and create their own androids. While this does not sound as bad as I make it out to be, please consider this: I am the one who design all of them, and still my much younger sister was able to save lives by simply pointing out errors that not even I discovered. Just imagine, then, the destruction that could be caused by someone with the schematics, but not the proper materials or intelligence to use them. And we know all to well that there are those who would try, seeing as I've made it public."
The man looked at me. "Then why not bring them here for safekeeping?"
"Because, sir, no offense, but the protection in my home far exceeds that of even this building, with hundreds of tripwires, a relay to send messages directly to Kelle if someone intrudes, and an army of other, smaller robots, I'm quite sure that no one on this planet except me and my family could get twenty feet into that building."
The man smiles and leans back in his chair a bit. "I like your initiative. Continue."
"Thank you, sir. After the motor functions are added, synthetic flesh and skin are added. Then comes the actual 'Sculpting' process. Once the proper amount of body parts are added, the outer layer can then be altered to the Sculptors desire. I would also like to point out that the androids are by then capable of all basic human functions except movement and thought, they are machines, like a computer. Once it is sculpted in it's entirety, the shape, gender, name, and other such basic details of the identity are uploaded to the soul matrix. This includes the safety rules and basic knowledge, as well as the personality randomizer, to allow each android to be different. Finally, the soul matrix is activated, and the android awakes in three minutes and two point five seconds."
The one who had spoken before stood up. "This process, while very interesting, has two things I would like explained further. First, what is a soul matrix?"
"The soul matrix is an incredibly advanced supercomputer, which takes anywhere from a month to a year to code. My android's soul matrix's each took three months of focused work, not including the tweaking afterwords."
"Okay, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Second, how can you prove to us that they are indeed sentient?"
"Sir, I shall respond with a question myself. How can I prove that I am sentient?"
"You bring up a good point. We must test them, of course, but for now, they are considered sentient, and your work will be supported and protected."
"Thank you, sir. When shall the testing be?"
"Within a month, if possible, but let them decide."
"Understood."
"This hearing is as of now officially over. You may go."
The others and I left, back to my home.
-end my speech-

As you can see, my speech was a complete success! Now I will go sleep, I am tired.

-Real time-
November 1, 2050.
As I wake up, I can feel a wait on my chest. Sarana sneaked into the bed again while I was asleep. She has a habit of doing that. I didn't really mind. Her mind was my best work on her, while with Kelle, I focused more on the body. Sarana has apparently declared herself my girlfriend, although that was quite definitely not hard-coded. I gently woke her, and as she sat up, I realized that, of all things, she was naked! Now, yes, I did make her body, and I think I did very well with certain... parts. But, still, that was when she wasn't really alive. Now that there is a mind in the body, it's a little... startling. "Um... Please put on a shirt... Please? You're beautiful, but... um.... uh..." Gah! I thought I was supposed to be a genius! I have discovered that the mere presence of a pretty girl causes brain failure.
So I got up and ate, looking at my TV wall. I watched the news, and realized that I was supposed to go in for the research today. "Hey, Kelle, Sarana, watch Shali and Thera for me, I'll be back in few hours. I've got some work to do." I said, as I put on my lab coat. Yes, I do actually wear a white lab coat. Because lab coats are awesome. I got in my car, an old one of unknown origin. As I drove to the build, I wondered how the serum worked. But little did I know that I wasn't to find out anything about the serum except for the one thing I could do without.
-At the lab-
I walked in the doorways, the sterilizing field crackling over my skin. I pulled on my gloves and went to the table. Around it were two female researchers, and one male. As I walked near, I saw him twitch. I ignored it, thinking that this job must be stressful, you know? But I shouldn't have ignored it. And I definitelyo should have taken that little laugh I heard as a bad sign as well, but maybe he had just thought of something funny. I was wrong, very wrong. I was reading the charts on the wall, when he yelled something incomprehensible, and swallowed the formula, which he had added something. The two other scientists tried to help him as he screamed in pain, but to no avail. He clawed at the table, his body changing. He started laughing, in this almost insane way. I immediately back away to the door, hitting the emergency button many, many times, very, very fast. As the alarm blared, he clawed at the two women, getting both of them in the face. I ran out the door as fast as I could, locking it behind me, for I had seen his suddenly appearing claws go through their heads. I told the men who came because of the alarm all that had happened, they told me to leave to my home as fast as possible, and they would handle it. I slammed the door of my car open, slammed it shut, and sped home as fast as possible, taking of my coat and letting it drop to the floor as I came in.
Sarana was cleaning up a mess in the main room, probably caused by Shali and Thera. I told her what happened, and she was concerned, running to me to see if I was hurt. When Kelle came in and I told her, she had nearly the same reaction. I wasn't hurt, a fact I would never regret.

||Chapter Two||

When I woke up the next morning, I found Shali and Thera standing beside my bed, holding a tray of food. It was my birthday, and she had gotten permission to help cook from Kelle. They gave me the food, and started to talk my head of. Shali has a habit of doing that. When they finally finished talking about what they and Kelle had planned for my day, I was, unfortunately, reminded of the events of the previous day, and that I would have to go in and explain that morning. When I explained why I had to go on my birthday, Shali gave me sad look. I told her that I'd be back soon. It was only a small bit of explaining, seeing as I had left immediately. When I got up and told Sarana that I'd be back in an hour or two.
When I got to the building again, I was suprised to see a total of ten armed guards around the doors. Luckily for me, one of them was from yesterday, though the others were new. He let me past, but not into the building. "Sir, I suggest you don't even look in there, for you're own mental health."
I was surprised. Surely they should have been able to stop one man. "What happened?"
He pointed to a building to his right, and said "Just go there, the others will explain."
I didn't really understand the reason for all this, it was just one crazed scientist, weakened by his own forgetting to eat in favor of work. The smartest people are like that sometimes. When I went into the indicated building, I saw, of all things, two cages, one of them twice the size of the others. Both were covered, and an odd growling noise came from both. I looked at the rest of the room, and saw half of the same people from my speech, including the one who asked the questions. He spoke first, "Jaime, it is good to see that you are still alive, and also human."
I was a little confused, seeing as the second one should be obvious. "Sir, please explain."
"In a moment. I'm going to show you, instead, first," he gestured to the cages, "Men, remove the coverings." Two armed guards pulled the sheets of off the cages. I wished they hadn't. In the cages were the three that I had met yesterday, the male in the smaller cage. Actually, it would be more appropriate to say that these... things... sort of resembled them. Each was covered in blood, the male in the most, and all of them bitten in various places. The male growled and jumped at the cage wall. The other two did pretty much the same, but slower, as if they had more trouble, though they looked in better condition than the male. "Oh my. What happened to them!?" I yelled, almost jumping back.
"I don't know, that is for us to decide later. Now, I am going to ask you some questions, and you are going to do your best to answer them. Understood?"
"Understood." I nodded, trying hard not to look at what was once three intelligent, successful people.
"First, did Jeref act unusual in anyway before the incident?"
I assumed that Jeref was the name of the male scientist. "Nothing that I can think of- No, wait, he was laughing under his breath when I came in. I didn't think much of it at the time, I thought he might have just thought of a funny joke, or something. He also twitched a little as well, but I believed it to be stress." I am far, far to trusting.
"I understand your reasoning. It turned out that you were wrong, but you still tried to make sense of it. Continue."
"I was examining some charts, he added something to the formula, and then yelled out, not really a word, just a shout of noise, and drank it. When he started screaming in pain, the others tried to help him, but they could do nothing."
"Yes, the cameras caught this."
"I hit the emergency button at least twenty times in a row, and bolted for the door when he clawed at the other two. He- he cut- oh god- he cut through their h-heads." I finished, unable to hold my sadness and fear of what he did.
"This all matches up. Do you know what he could have added?"
"N-no sir." I replied, still shaken.
"Whatever he added had extreme effects, and not in a good way. What you see in that cage is almost already dead, without a single bullet. The serum killed him, and then did it's job, bringing him back. As this." He gestured to the cage. "Something spread this to the other two, although our cameras were attacked by it beforehand. They are like him, although the death seems to be stronger- he must have gotten both at once, or the effect is different only for the following generations."
I was amazed and disgusted by these facts."Sir. What happened in the other building to need a ten man guard?"
"I was getting to that. These creatures, like the zombies of legends and stories, seem to crave human flesh, attacking and trying to devour anyone who entered the building. They got ten of our other men, only one man from the original team is still alive. The others, so far, have not changed like these two. We have sent their bodies to be cremated, just in case."
{Will continue writing in a day or two.}

A: Of my story so far. It's nowhere near complete, of course.
And
B: Defines a zombie.
I think a zombie is defined in the simplest terms as a brain devouring, undead anything.
Do you find this valuable?
