This has been my third double shift, only having 3 hours of sleep in between them in the on-call room, and Im dead on my feet. Normally I only work the graveyard shift at Sacred Heart Hospital, but the ER has been overflowing three days straight without end. People have been coming to the ER, sometime by the bus loads it seems, with a new flu like illness but neither the doctors at Sacred Heart or the W.H.O. have seen anything like this . It starts with cold sweets, then progress to respiratory failure/confusion/delusion, then quickly into coma and hours later sudden death. Ive been a nurse for 13 years, and this has all of us completely baffled. There is nothing we can do to help these poor people, only treat their symptoms. When their inevitable death comes, we quickly bag’em and tag’em and push them into the morgue to make room for new patients to which we can do nothing for.
Dr. Benning, has sent some of us home for 24 hours to get some solid rest. He doesn’t want us to collapse in the ER, usually he would have sent us home yesterday but with all the madness I guess we all lost track of time. I hate to leave all these people here, but since we cant do anything for them now and Im about to snap, and I haven’t seen my husband for a few days its good for me to get into my own bed.
Robert has been very understanding of the demands of my job, and it works out since he is always away on business. This weekend would have been the first weekend we would have had to spend together, and he texted me earlier to let me know he planned to make dinner for us but by now he had gone to bed and the dinner was cold. Ill be so glad just to be next to him for awhile before I have to return to Sacred Heart. Maybe they’ll know something by then.
Crawling into the drivers seat of my Mercedes, I realized it would be a good idea to call a cab. The house is only 20 minutes down I26, Ive been up this long, 20 more minutes wont hurt.
Heavy, blurry eyes…..
Road signs look like big green blobs….
Yellow dotted line, one long line……
Here’s my exit……
I made it this far without a hitch. Now just 15 miles of country roads till bed-time………. …….
[LOAD SEMI HORN] BIRRRRRRR! ****! IM IN THE WRONG LANE!
[swerves to the right] ****! IM ALMOST IN THE DITCH! LOOK OUT FOR THAT HITCHHIKER!!!!!
[BAM!] OH MY GOD I HIT THAT GUY! He’s on my hood, Ive got to shake him off my windshield! OMG OMG OMG
[swerves right, looses control and shoots through the woods] OMG OMG IM SO SORRY OMG OMG OMG
[slams head on into a tree pinning the hitchhiker between the tree and front bumper]
[airbag deploys, head bangs against door window, passes out to the sound of a blairing car horn]
OMG, my head. Uuuuurgh. What happened? I had an accident?! My rearview mirror in the floorboard…… yep ive got a nasty bump and cut on my head. Doesn’t look like I have a concussion. OMG my Mercedes. I gotta get out and look at her, maybe its not so bad.
[horn still blairing]
The front end is smashed, and the windshield is cracked, I need to pull the fuse on my horn. Cant drive home like that.
[Pulls fuse under the hood]
OMG my Mercedes. I cant wait to get home to see Robert. He will have to drive me to work and call the insurance company. Ill be too busy for a while. I should call him and have him come get me. DAMNIT, I left my phone in my locker at work. I’ll have to drive it home myself, I hope I can see through this cracked windshield and all the blood on it.
BLOOD?! THE BLOOD IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD! How did it get there?! What happened? I was driving home on I26, turn off the interstate and headed through the country. Fell asleep. Swerved to miss the semi. Swerved to miss the ditch. Swerved to miss the hitchhiker….
HITCHIKER?! I thought that was a dream! OMG OMG! Where is he? WHERE IS HE? OMG OMG! It must have been a dream! OMG but the outside of the windshield is covered in blood?!
[looks around the car, around the tree. No body. No tracks.]
OOOOH NOOO?! WHAAT HAPPENED?! WHERE IS HE?! Am I still dreaming? Oh no. Just get home. Nobody saw it. It didn’t happen.
[drives slowly home. Left headlight dangling, right headlight shining into the trees] [pulls into garage and gets out. Looks at her car and the smear of blood on the hood. Then walks to the door. A note]
Honey, I waited up for you, I know youre so busy with this new flu so im not upset. The boss called me into work, im flying to san diego for a few days. I really wish we could have spent at least one night together but I will have to wait till next weekend. I call youre phone but you didn’t answer. I love you and Miss you. Robert]
DAMNIT! Could this night get any worse?! I don’t even want to go into that house alone. Im so scared. Who was that man? Where did he go? What if he tells the cops? He looked a lot like the patients ive seen. Hard to say with all the blood. Oooooooo my gooooooooood?!
[Crawls back into the drivers seat and rests her head on the steering wheel.]
[a thump.... under the car]
Whats that?! [looks in the side mirrors] ……
its been a long week…
[SWISH from under the car]
WHAT?! [turns to look out the back window] WHOS THERE?! Im losing my mind. All the death. No sleep. Im going to lean my seat back and sleep here.
AAAAHRAAAGH! IM SORRY FOR HITTING YOU! IM SORRY!
[ZOMBIE CRAWLS THROUGH WINDOW.PROCEDEDS TO EATING]
AHAHAHAHA NOOOO NOOO IM SOOOOOORYY! AAAAAAAAAAHHHH….grrrr….ssssaaah, END

this is my first zombie fiction story. Im posting it here because i respect all your opinions. please respect me and give positive a negative options but please dont tear me apart lmao
I ignored some common zombie theories in this story, just so it would be short and so it would work. so just overlook them a little and i think you will enjoy the story
