Whether it be because of the affects of the economy for preparedness, the new administration or just because democrats are in the White House (no flames for this mention please), guns and ammo are soooo beyond missing from store shelves these days. Most places I check, even on the Internet, guns are sold out (decent ones anyways); ammo even more so!! Even certain vital parts to build pistols or long guns are very scarce.. And this is with a Non-Direct threat or Clear and Present Physical Danger to us in the moment. There are no Zed's shambling or running after us....there are no Viral, Rage, Rabies infected or otherwise stalking our every fleeing moment....yet. Just yesterday, I spent the latter part of the day and evening looking for certain ammo, such as 9mm, .380, 38, 45, 12 Gauge Slugs, 00 Buckshot - let alone .223 or 7.62x39....store after store were out, or had very precious few boxes. And I'm talking about under a dozen. Big 5's, Walmart, Turners Outdoorsman, and other stores. Out... So I can't even imagine on ZDay/Outbreak Day/even a Natural Disaster, trying to "raid" these local stores and find our Gun and Ammo needs for defense and survival. You might get lucky and find a whole lot of Bird Shot that seems to be left over everywhere as it seems. So...you better hope, that's all you have to protect yourself and yours from, are some evil zombie birds, because if not you'll be in a world of hurt. ZedBattalion says...prepare, prepare, prepare.

Just thinking about the best and smartest places to survive on Z-Day without having to depend on isolating yourself in a building.
Just to mention a few zombies or humans would have a trouble traversing Swamps, Islands- In a river, sheer faces mountains. Anyother other places you can think of you discussion if the places I mentioned are safe from raiders or zombies.

today i drove into the country to shoot my M&P .40 and forgot to bring my ear plugs. it was too far to drive home or to a store to buy ear plugs so i decided to tough it out and shoot. i was DEAF for over 30 minutes.
that made me think....what will we do to protect out ears in an outbreak? sure we could wear ear plugs or something, but they restrict our ability to hear. i dont want my hearing restricted by ear plugs while im running through my town escaping zombies, but i dont want to destroy my hearing at the same time. do you guys know what i/ we should do? maybe the answer is obvious so dont be harsh :)

I think this threat has been pretty overlooked.
Whats to stop the government from trying to clean up the mess with a nuke? I think the initial outbreak will only present itself in a few cities before being noticed worldwide (if it in fact grows to that scale) If that is the case we should possibly consider escape before anything else Any thoughts?

Protecting yourself from the undead isn't enough. The living will also pose a major threat.
How will you protect yourself (and others) from rampaging gangs of thugs and murderers? Will you run? Will you hide? Will you fight? Will you pay them tribute to leave you alone? I realize this thread has probably been done, but I'd like to know what everybody's ideas are.

There is already a "worst states", but that is somewhat limiting, as state-to-state the differences can only be so much. However, there can be innumerable differences between two nations considered to be similar, so that speaks volumes. What nations do you not want to be caught in preparing for the worst?
Personally, I would have to pick a nation such as (example) Zimbabwe. Laughably ridiculous inflation rate, poor organization of disaster response, an ethnically charged populace ("I'm not helping you, you're one of them"), and few sources of fresh (non-censored) information. The abundance of gangs and guns might help for a while (short term) but those sorts of systems tend to crumble without a strong, charismatic leader, if not before.

I was going to title this (or sub title) States with the worst gun laws but they have more than one disadvantage to general survivalist preparation including: large urban populations, clogged road systems, polluted water systems, etc.
So here they are (in rank order of worst to only slightly less worse): California (AKA: PRC, Kalifornia), Massachusetts (Tax-a-chew-sets), New York, Illinois (ill and annoyed), New Jersey (People's Republic of NJ), Hawaii (Liberal paradise), Maryland (Democratic People's Republic of) and Connecticutt (Can-I-get-a-cut? Yes I can). Why start this thread? I have noticed quite a few threads have questions concerning firearms and locality. This is an attempt at a 'blanket' approach. There are quite a few knowledgeable members but the knowledge is spread out on various threads.

i have lived in the city but i have spent most of my life in the rural parts of this country. Urban survival, seems to me, the most difficult kind of zombie survival. I would like to mention a few problems i have, so everyone can give me some good ideas about urban survival. (i searched and didnt find any articles. maybe we need to create a page on this)
question #1........ how would you dress yourself in an urban survival scenario. i mean how would you dress yourself so that it is functional and you dont draw attention to yourself. (urban cammo isnt literal LOL) #2 do you stay or do you go? if you stay...how long? when do you decide to get out? what will be your transportation? #3 what are the strengths and weaknesses of urban survival? i tried to make these questions as clear as possible. also if they seem dumb to you, dont rail me, i dont live in an urban area, so i dont make my plans for it

Anyone think walls are a poor choice?
Well how about pillars standing 15 or so feet proud of the ground with a platform built atop it? Metal pipe, telephone poles, or even trees present a mountable surface to place a platform and give very little surface area for zombies to press against and break. This could be moded in many ways and would act as a great lookout tower/ firing point with only a lowerable ladder to climb up.. Zipline could also be installed to aid in escape if that should ever be necessary.

Alot of people seem to be depending on some concrete or cinder block walls for protection there plans.
But how high should it really be? 9 feet? 10 feet? and whats the structural structural integrity of a 12" thinck wall with 1000 zombies beating on the other side? Basicly will zombies simply climb all over one another until there and enough fallin zombies on the ground they can climb over? Any ideas on wall constuction? Issues with zombies abilty to get passed the walls?

This swine flu, it's not gonna stop. It's going to keep spreading, and keep spreading, and keep spreading. Considering the large death toll in Mexico, but no deaths among the infected elsewhere, my guess would be this virus is VERY widespread in Mexico already, and we're only hearing of the very small % who die. The lethality being speculated about in the media is ridiculous; that presumes Mexico has a proper medical system which it doesn't. What we're hearing isn't the truth. This outbreak is spreading like wildfire, and there isn't much we can do to stop it. I truly believe this is the Z-Virus. It's spreading too fast, with too little knowledge of what it is. And the high level of contagiousness? That only solidifies my theory. Really, don't blow this off. If it's a false alarm; no harm done. If it's real; you got a heads up.
Stay on your toes.

Assuming information on Z-Day starts off slowly with sporadic radio and TV reports of violent mobs or unusual activities and slowly builds up until what is going on becomes obvious will you leave where you are to try and get to your family or whomever you planned to ride it out with or will you stay where you are and make the best of it? Do you have a plan if Z-Day starts while you are at work or away from home, assuming home is where your supplies, weapons, and family are? Do you carry a weapon everyplace you go just in case? I myself have a plan to get home to be with my family, pets, food, guns and ammo but plans usually change and if I have to ride it out at work I would be OK for a few a while but food would become a concern very quickly. We have steel fire doors between floors and can disable the elevators so there is no way to access the upper floors. The building is on a large university and about 140 years old so it is stone and brick, very strong. The first floor would be flooded with zeds just no way to keep them out we would be stuck on the upper floors. I would have a lot of people around me (possibly 100-150), not sure if that is good or bad as some dumb ass probably got bit on their way to work and will turn and start infecting others.
I live pretty deep in the mountains on high ground with the tree line cleared about 40 yards in the back and front and 20 on the sides (not great) but still very defensible. I drive a car but it is AWD and fast so I would be able to navigate the highway or back roads if the highway is jammed. I think I would try and get home no matter how bad. Is that suicide?

Highly useful in *now* world, might be only "Doc" around postZed.
As far as I'm aware as a Red Cross FA Instructor, there is no "low age limit" to taking classes. Only limitation is person's ability to understand what is being taught and in turn ramifications of using skills imparted. Being able to keep air moving, person breathing, stopping blood loss, and in turn helping transport injured to safer place will be a MUST for all Survivors. I will say withot out rancor that there is NO REASON nor EXCUSE for any participant here at ZSDW to NOT have minimal medical training. Get on the "bounce", find a class, get involved. Life that gets saved might be YOURS... I* will help you find a place to be trained if there isn't a public spot such as Community College, Red Cross, etc, to find certified Instructors. Okies soo this shift to a new phone and internet provider took two weeks leaving me without contact to the outside world v_v...
Obviously communications will be necessity whether or not Zombies are roaming the streets... So my question is what forms of communication will be active short and long term after a disaster? Plus what should people look for in a CB? Or other device? Since satelites are likely to remain active many years could regaining contact with one via a radio or phone tower enable someone with technical training to broadcast messages over long distances without much effort? Im rather clueless on this issue soo input would be appreciated... If you plan on becoming a hemit, living naked and alone with a bowie knife mabey this topic isnt for you :P
