A Guide to Surviving the Internet
By DevilnutsIf you are reading this, chances are good that you have given some thought to survival and how to stay safe in dangerous situations. Here at the Zombie Survival and Defense Wiki, we value the "survival mindset" -- taking personal responsibility to ensure the safety of yourself and those you care about. While it's great fun to discuss at length the myriad weapons, armor and base defenses you will employ to defend against the undead hordes, I would like to take a minute to remind you of another very important type of precaution you can begin using right now -- without even leaving your chair!!It's called Internet Security, and it's more important now than ever before to protect yourself online. Whether you are young or old, a new Internet user or an experienced 1337, retired or in junior high -- the advice below applies to you. Every day I have the misfortune of seeing well-intentioned users taken advantage of by Internet predators. Not all of them want to meet you after dark in the park; Some of them want your credit card number, others will steal your account information in order to spam advertisements. The bottom line is, whether it's online scammers or zombie mutants YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF. 1) Anti-Virus Software and Spyware RemovalAs a Network Administrator and IT Professional, I can guarantee that if you connect to the Internet in any way, shape or form, you have been targeted by malicious software. Anti Virus software is critically important to maintain the health of your system and safeguarding of sensitive information. If you cannot afford AV software, there are free programs available for download such as Avira or AVG. You get what you pay for, of course, but free is better than none at all. PROTECT YOURSELF. 2) PHISHING SCAMSI have seen literally hundreds of inexperienced users, friends and family members fall for these clever and deceptive scams. You may get an email or PM with a link, asking you to confirm your login name/password or bank information/credit card number. If you follow the link, you are taken to a web page that looks exactly like an official page. The URL (address) even looks similar to the real thing.Example: (do not click these links please)vvvvvv.americanbank.comvvvvvv.arnericanbank.comSee the difference? the second one uses "r" and "n" to make what appears to be "m." When you put your info in, it is sent to a scammer who then uses your personal information however he pleases. NEVER input personal or sensitive information into a form (page) provided through a link. Always go to the official website manually to enter your information. Look at the top of your browser -- go ahead, do it right now -- You see that "http://" URL? That is unsecure web browsing. Whenever you are shopping or browsing bank or credit card info, a legitimate website will have "https://" The "s" stands for "secure" and these sites are encrypted and verifiable. Remember this gem and you should be alright: NO LEGITIMATE BUSINESS OR WEBSITE ADMIN WILL EVER ASK YOU FOR YOUR PASSWORD!!! Never! This includes ZSDW, amazon, Gmail, Myspace, Facebook, World of Warcraft, banks, etc. If someone is asking for your password, THEY ARE SCAMMING YOU. If you feel you are being targeted by a Phishing scam, forward the correspondence to the website's admin team. Help protect other users! But most importantly...PROTECT YOURSELF.3) Personal or Sensitive InformationIt's fun to make friends online. But you can never be 100% sure of who you are talking to, or his/her intentions. Every day hundreds of innocent users are preyed upon by malicious Internet thieves, scammers and miscreants. The lucky ones get their bank accounts drained. Some users have been physically harmed or even killed due to their lack of awareness!! A good friend would never ask you to compromise your safety or that of the people you love. So don't do it! Nobody here on the ZSDW needs to know your full name, or your home address, or even your phone number. By posting this information on the forums or a wiki page, you are presenting yourself as a target for predators and criminals. Would you let raiders into your base after z-day? Of course not. So don't let them in before z-day, either. If you want to share information with someone you trust, do it via PM, not in public. PROTECT YOURSELF.
