One of the top strategies on this wiki for surviving a zombie outbreak is to get to a remote island. Obviously, it also has to be fairly sparsely populated and hopefully with fresh water.

Pros of fleeing to an island :

13th.Casualty - A small enough island is pretty easy to defend.
kingrich3-Uninhabited islands have no zombies. Island groups provide several places to which you could retreat to if there are any zombies. and if your're far enough away from the shore, currents would just sweep the zombies away
kingrich3- just check out the other pros here
Spraymachine: If you have fishing supplies, you have access to a constant source of food.
Shadowdoug- you have a port, animals, water and access to the local islands or mainland for winter foraging(read my survival plan)
cylon1994 - There have been many civilizations that have survived on islands for generations, Many books have been written about surviving on an island, At some piont you would have to forget about the zombies and worry about supplies and an island is rich with supplies.

So Far:
  • Easy to defend
  • No zombies!
  • Unlimited food (w/fish)
  • Lots of possible supplies (Depends on the island you flee to)
  • Already been done

Cons of fleeing to an island :

CyprusBill - Zombies might not be able to swim well, or at all, but they may eventually walk across the ocean bed and up onto the beach one day.
GrantHatman - Or they could float.
13th.Casualty - Pretty isolated if you don't have any method of communication. You won't know when the outbreak is over or if the government found out that your island is the source of the outbreak and will be nuked. That will suck.
Hell_Razor: Let's not forget the hardest part about living on an island, and that is getting there. Time spent getting to the port aside, nautical navigation takes skill and experiance to learn. Unless you own a boat and/or are prior navy or merchant marines, or are with a group of such individuals, look elsewhere for a safe haven.
Whtwlf: Be careful of the island home you choose. One of the most devistating forces of nature happens to pass through the tropics every year, hurricanes. Make sure your island isn't in a place that gets slammed by hurricanes every year. You can see if your island is safe by checking this map of hurricane tracks over the past 20 years. Also, without a viable source of fresh water, you would have to create or bring a filtration system. The system would requier constant, time consuming repair.
TonyPro: In taking refuge on an island, you must be sure of a long-lasting/continuous supply of food and water. The problem is, more people, hundreds, perhaps, may flock to take refuge on the same island. In this instance, all provisions on the island would be seriously depleted in a short time, leaving all involved in a very bad state, especially if there is no means of getting off. And if the infection somehow spread to the island...
kingrich3:There aren't any wal-mart's on small islands. so you need to grow your own food.
Spraymachine: Pirates, looters, and bears, oh my! Some people might sail by, see you have a colony setup, then rob you blind, possibly killing everyone in the process.
Shadowdoug- might be trapped if "they" can get you pinned up on an island

So Far:
  • Zombies might eventually show up
  • Communication is hard
  • Hurricanes and tropical storms
  • More people might arrive
  • Less pre-outbreak food and water availible
  • Possible attacks by pirates
  • Possibility of being trapped

Methods for communicating with the outside world :

13th.Casualty - There's always the good old signal fire, but a pile of zombies all around the beach might suffice. Besides, I imagine a couple hundred or thousand zombie moans may be loud enough to be heard for at least 2 miles with all the echo. Of course, probably the best course of action is the handy-dandy...radio!
Hell_Razor: Considering that after Z-Day happens satellites will be falling out of the sky like rain, you're almost completely cut off.
kingrich3: Why communicate? if human's are out there and winning, you'll know it, maybe by the gunshots, or sudden lack of zomie's, or the faints silouettes of mushroom clouds in the distance. (Sigh) But you'll know it.
13th.Casualty: I doubt you'll notice gunshots and sudden lack of zombies in a deserted island in the middle of the sea. And who knows if those mushroom clouds are from the military and are targeted against zombies. I mean, it could be some kind of post-Apocalyptic colony trying to kill another colony for their supplies.
shadowdoug- Ham radio, signal fires, trips to the main land or other islands

Solar Desalination:
Saltwater+sun+simple rig=pure water
If you were to live on an island without a fresh water source, you would have to get fresh water somehow. I would rule out electricity as the sun won't run out and it is much simpler, meaning you can probably fix it if it breaks somehow.
The basics of a solar distiller is that you have a container with salt water in it that is a black surface to generate heat from the sun. The heat causes water to evaporate, and condense in the water container. Make sure the change the water when about half has distilled out to prevent salt buildup in the distiller. You can use mirrors, mylar, and other reflective material to redirect sunlight to your distiller. If you create a vacuum effect in the chamber, the water will boil at a lower temperature increasing production rates.

Here is a video to demonstrate solar distillation principles:

warning: after several personal tests on this prosess I have found that it is incapable of desalinizing water, do not try this with ocean water or you will die a very horrable death!! (alicestar)
