Island Survial |
Version 36 - view current page
One of the top strategies on this wiki for surviving a zombie outbreak is to get to a remote island. Obviously, it also has to be fairly sparsely populated and hopefully with fresh water.

Pros of fleeing to an island :
13th.Casualty - A small enough island is pretty easy to defend.
kingrich3-Uninhabited islands have no zombies. Island groups provide several places to which you could retreat to if there are any zombies. and if your're far enough away from the shore, currents would just sweep the zombies away
kingrich3- just check out the other pros here
Cons of fleeing to an island :
CyprusBill - Zombies might not be able to swim well, or at all, but they may eventually walk across the ocean bed and up onto the beach one day.
GrantHatman - Or they could float.
13th.Casualty - Pretty isolated if you don't have any method of communication. You won't know when the outbreak is over or if the government found out that your island is the source of the outbreak and will be nuked. That will suck.
Hell_Razor: Let's not forget the hardest part about living on an island, and that is getting there. Time spent getting to the port aside, nautical navigation takes skill and experiance to learn. Unless you own a boat and/or are prior navy or merchant marines, or are with a group of such individuals, look elsewhere for a safe haven.
Whtwlf: Be careful of the island home you choose. One of the most devistating forces of nature happens to pass through the tropics every year, hurricanes. Make sure your island isn't in a place that gets slammed by hurricanes every year. You can see if your island is safe by checking this map of hurricane tracks over the past 20 years. Also, without a viable source of fresh water, you would have to create or bring a filtration system. The system would requier constant, time consuming repair.
TonyPro: In taking refuge on an island, you must be sure of a long-lasting/continuous supply of food and water. The problem is, more people, hundreds, perhaps, may flock to take refuge on the same island. In this instance, all provisions on the island would be seriously depleted in a short time, leaving all involved in a very bad state, especially if there is no means of getting off. And if the infection somehow spread to the island...
kingrich3:There aren't any wal-mart's on small islands. so you need to grow your own food (Grown)
Methods for communicating with the outside world :
13th.Casualty - There's always the good old signal fire, but a pile of zombies all around the beach might suffice. Besides, I imagine a couple hundred or thousand zombie moans may be loud enough to be heard for at least 2 miles with all the echo. Of course, probably the best course of action is the handy-dandy...radio!
Hell_Razor: Considering that after Z-Day happens satellites will be falling out of the sky like rain, you're almost completely cut off.
kingrich3: Why communicate? if human's are out there and winning, you'll know it, maybe by the gunshots, or sudden lack of zomie's, or the faints silouettes of mushroom clouds in the distance. (Sigh) But you'll know it.
13th.Casualty: I doubt you'll notice gunshots and sudden lack of zombies in a deserted island in the middle of the sea. And who knows if those mushroom clouds are from the military and are targeted against zombies. I mean, it could be some kind of post-Apocalyptic colony trying to kill another colony for their supplies.
