how about borrowing one or 2 of those amphibious assault or nuclear aircraft carriers the U.S. Navy has? If you convert the top to a hydroponics farm, there's your food. Before you leave (to the ocean), gather some effective desailiation gear from a desailination plant, and fishing trawler gear for a second set of food. kick off the jets and modify some sort take off and landing planes like a Maule or Piper Cub that could land on the carrier. Float around the oceans and stael non perishibles from zones the zees have rampaged through. If you are smart about you're resourses, you could support the 5000+ men they were designed to carry. Since all carriers in the U.S. navy return home or remain on stand-by, you could possibly move into one of the other nuclear vessals, execpt for subs. Since the naval vessals are almost always staffed, you could still have men to operate the equipment. If possible, link up with other Carriers and ride out Z-Day.

For those in the CT RI area, you could evacuate to Block island. MY civil air patrol unit has a Cessna 172 almost always, and it's a 45-minute drive from my place. AND the hanger is in danbury, so it shouldn't be too hard to get in, get the 172, pack it up with gear and leave for block island. 4 seats of freedown. I've flown over the island and it's mostly cliffs around the beach. the only good ways in are via plane (4 to 6 seaters, no jets) and by boat. i'm preety sure fishing is big there. there is also a realitvle small populace. A bike could cross the island quickly, eliminating the need for gas.

Shelleybear I have a few questions. 1 who will navigate the freighters, its not easy. 2 What about fuel, and food. You will have to know were the right ports are for fuel. Food will be hard also most stores are inland. You may have to travel miles to find a grocery store. And to do that you will need smaller boats to go ashore. then theres break-downs, and weather most of lake Superior freezes up and will crush a freighters hull. It may work for a short term, if you can find people to operate the ship..

The French southern and antarctic lands, which is an actual island it just sounds like it's out of lord of the rings or something, is right next to Antarctica and has a research station and dock, the research station provides shelter and basic supplys. since zombies are dead and therefor produce no body heat they freeze up at temperatures below 0 degrees, i wouldn't even need to worry about floating zombies owning me and my dudes at my arctic base, there's also dense populations of fish around Antarctica and i could fish all the fish i needed like forever. there's also another research base on another island a few kilometers away from my base that i could raid supplys from.

If you could guarantee that an island could be and stay isolated from the outbreak, it would be an ideal haven. But since there would never be a solid guarantee, and it only takes 1 to start the nightmare, it seems to me that locating to an island might be backing yourself into a corner. If, for some reason, it became overrun and you were unable to reach your boat and leave, there would be only so many places to go.
I've always preferred to have to option of greater mobility if it became needed. A mobile encampment similar to Res. Evil Extinction. 4 or more RVs, buses, or diesels, that you could circle up at night, unhook and roll if you needed. IMO. Thoughts?

Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,820 square miles (82,413 km²)—which is larger than South Carolina. It has a maximum length of 350 miles (563 km) and maximum breadth of 160 miles (257 km). Its average depth is 483 feet (147 m) with a maximum depth of 1,333 feet (406 m).
The largest lake freighter is 729 feet long, 39 feet high with a capacity of 26,600 short tons. Several of those not only give you an island, they give you a moving colony with unlimited access to fresh water and food.

Just a suggestion. Perhaps under each section there should be bullets for pros, cons and communications similar to the lists of islands and techniques. Instead of the names being st the beginning of the suggestion, they can be moved to the end in brackets or parenthesis.
