Kel-Tec SU-16AModel: Weapon name
The Kel-Tec SU-16 rifle is a semi-automatic rifle produced by Kel-Tec, based out of Cocoa, Florida. It has been in production since 2003 and is meant for home defense, hunting, target shooting, and survival. It takes STANAG magazines, allowing compatibility with military ammunition from the majority of NATO forces, and includes a Picatinny rail along the top of the receiver (except for the short-barreled SU-16D) for mounting a scope or reflex sight.

Along with its light weight, the SU-16 is unique in that it can be folded; all varieties allow for the stock to be folded under and carried in a compact configuration small enough to fit in a backpack, with the SU-16A and SU-16B including a compartment in the stock for two 10-round magazines or one 20 or 30-round magazine. The SU-16C and SU-16D can be fired with the stock folded. The handguard can be folded down to form a bipod as well.

Where to find

The SU-16 is a common rifle for home defense, but it mostly shines in terms of survival: backpackers, hunters, tourists, pilots, and anyone who needs a powerful weapon small enough to fit in a backpack will often find the SU-16 suited to their needs. It can be found in gun stores across the country for $500-800.

Complexity

The SU-16 is a civilian's gun: light, easy to use, and reliable when hiking out in the sticks for days on end. It's designed to be an extremely simple alternative to the Mini-14 or AR-15. One point of contention is the back of the upper receiver blocking the chamber and breech, making it difficult to clean all the way to the back of the bore and requiring a penlight to examine it.

Controls

  • Safety: Cross-bolt behind the trigger; push to the left for FIRE, to the right for SAFE.
  • Magazine release: Above the magazine well on the right side; for a right-handed shooter, can be pressed with the right index finger.
  • Operating handle: Located on the right side of the upper receiver.

    6. Release the recoil spring tube, allowing it to slide about 1/4 of an inch into the receiver.
    7. Slowly pull the operating handle back; no pressure should be felt. Push it into the removal cutout in the receiver and pull it straight out of the bolt carrier.
    8. Holding the recoil spring tube, guide the bolt carrier assembly out of the bottom of the receiver.
    Reverse to reassemble.

    weapon1978 Best 223 around that no one knows about (page: 1 2 3) 47 May 29 2011, 1:22 AM EDT by John_234

I've owned all the different types of rifles that use the .223 caliber, this is by far the best.

AR-15's jam when they get dirty or when a strong wind blows, that's the reason US troops grab AK-47's when their AR's jam because AK's work no matter what.

Mini 14's are crap for accuracy and don't like cheap ammo.

The Kel-Tec SU16's are the best of all 3 worlds. The inside is setup like an AK-47, which means it will function no matter what and eats up any kind of ammo. But it takes AR-15/M-16 magazines, any type. The buttstock is just like the Mini 14 in shape, which personally I think adds to accuracy.

I put a 3-9 power 28mm scope on mine so it is low profile and I am shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yards, I have not had a misfire yet.

I had one malfunction due to user error, when you put a mag it and slam it home make sure the bolt is closed or the mag will not feed right, I left the bolt open and had a misfeed. Like I said, my fault.

It's super light, you can carry it in one hand with a 30rd mag in it and the two 10 rounders in the stock. DO NOT PUT A 20 OR 30 ROUND MAG IN THE STOCK, YOU WILL NEVER GET IT OUT! I learned the hard way. Just put the two ten rounders in the stock they slide right in and stick, and because they have a lip on them they are easy to pull out. Besides, if you need to lay down you need the ten rounders so your head doesn't pop up.

Please feel free to ask me any questions this is a great weapon, also the entire gun is made out of the same polymer that Glocks are made out of. AND NO I DON'T WORK FOR KEL-TEC.
