LJ's Pocket Survival KitThis is a featured page

I've been a big fan of Ironhand's Pocket Survival Kit, which uses an empty "Altoids" can and is stuffed full of small but very important and helpful items for survival. In a way, the items in my kit are more luxuries than actual necessities but they could also mean the difference between survival and defeat in a wilderness setting. This kit is supplementary in nature - it is intended to be used by those with a broad skill set and who already have the essentials items on their person or laying around in their BOB's.

This kit contains:
  • 1 Altoids can, empty
  • 1 small "tea" candle, unscented
  • 1 small box or book of matches
  • 3-4 feet of metal snare wire
  • 1 large pill capsule, with 3 multivitamins and 6 Ibuprofen in it
  • 2 "wetnaps" for sanitation
  • 2 earplugs, with sewing needle stuck through and 3 feet of 15 lbs fly fishing leader wrapped around them
  • 1 large nail
  • 2 fly fishing flies (both of which float on their own)
  • 2 brass threaded hangers
Recent Additions Include (NOT PICTURED):
  • 2 beef bullion cubes, wrapped in foil paper
  • 1 Bigelow "Constant Comment" tea bag
The Altoids can is reasonably water proof, but to help keep it closed I wrapped about 3 feet of white cordage around the can, which can also be used for a number of tasks as well. The earplugs might seem like an odd addition, but I added them because they're excellent bobbers for homemade fishing hooks! They also make a handy pincushion as well.

An addition I haven't yet made but will is a razor blade. This isn't really a necessity because I carry an excellent folding pocket knife on my person almost 100% of the time, and in my hiking gear are several knives of various size but a small razor blade is particularly useful for preparing small game, birds and fish.

The candle is an important addition. Its yet another stable firestarting tool and can be used over and over again to light tinder, or you can use it all in one fire if you're certain you can keep the fire sustained.
