Part 1: Bugging In
Staying at home is only a temporary plan. Windows and doors would have to be boarded up first. To do this we have a supply of boards and old doors in the attic. Hammers and nails are in the garage. We have eight regular sized windows plus one picture frame window on the main floor. The six small windows in the basement will have to be barricaded. If this is not possible due to their size, it will be necessary to block the door to the basement. Once immediate fortification is done, attention will be turned to stocking up and escaping.

Part 2: Bugging Out

Option 1: The Country
We will head to our parents house out in the country. Pros - friendly, remote, defensible. Cons - no easy escape route, lack of weaponry.

Option 2: The River
We will head to the property we own along the Mississippi River. Pros - remote, defensible, various escape possibilities, weaponry available. Cons - possible unfriendly reception.

If at all possible, we will take both our SUV and our car when we bug out. This will double the amount of food and other necessities we will be able to bring with us, as well as allowing us to have a backup vehicle.

Part 3: Digging In
Option 1: The Country
The house would have to be fortified, windows and doors boarded, etc. There is a fireplace, so if power is lost we can still cook and have heat. A small supply of wood is already available on the porch area and would be easy to bring into the house itself. Some food supplies are also available. More would have to be brought in. The one neighboring house may have some supplies that could be raided, including food and possibly weapons.

Option 2: The River
The property we own only has a garage on it. However, several people live in the area year round and have defensible well stocked houses. The first house on the road is owned by a firearm aficionado. If he has survived our first goal would be getting him to team up with us. If he hasn't, we would raid his home and move on. With any luck several households will have survived, as the area is very remote. With assistance, we would be able to block off the entrance onto the only road that runs into the area. Some defenses would have to be established in the wooded area around the road. The other sides have a natural barrier of a cliff and the river. The people who live year round in this area (about a dozen households) are used to being secluded and self-reliant, so there homes are always stocked with food, wood, weapons, etc. They have their own wells, and the river would be another possible water source. Food could also be supplemented by fish and small game as well as garden and wild plants.

In the event that we are overrun by zombies at some point, we would have boats ready to take us out to the many islands just off the shore. One or more of these islands should be stocked with emergency supplies in case we have to leave everything behind. After that, we could take the river to try to find a new holdout.

Part 4: Living
Adjusting to life after the Zombie Apocalypse would be tough, but not impossible. We're a close family, and already enjoy camping, hiking, etc. It would be hardest on the children, but they are adaptable. Even a life focused primarily on survival can include creativity and fun. We would keep busy finding new and better ways to live in our new environment.

The decision of whether or not to seek out other survivors would depend mostly on how well we are doing. If food and space is abundant, a few extra hands would be appreciated. If we are barely holding out then we would have to put ourselves first. To look for survivors, the safest way would be to go by boat. Navigating the locks and dams could prove difficult, but if we are able to ford around them we should be able to get to Arsenal Island, a military camp outside of Rock Island. That would be the best place to start our search for other survivors.
