Last Stand 2 Review

Where have you been?
If you haven't played the first Last Stand game, you really are missing out.
Unlike most of the great zombie games out today, it's entirely free to play and just like any other zombie game, very hard to get sick of.
While obviously, being a flash game, it can't possibly measure up to the scale of epic zombie games like Dead Rising, but unlike Dead Rising, which sees the protagonist fighting endless swarms of zombies in a shopping mall, a la Dawn of the Dead, the Last Stand games take a more Night of the Living Dead approach.

Do as you would do.
The main character, an anonymous hardcore survivalist with some nice gun skills, builds a simple barricade and fends off waves of zombies until the sun rises. It's fun and frantic action with plenty of neat gore effects.
But the fun doesn't stop there. As you would in a real zombie outbreak, you must use your time at the end of each level (12 hours) to do what zombie survivors do. Search for weapons, find survivors to help you, and repair your barricade for when the zombies start coming at you again.
This is undoubtedly one of the most believable zombie games out there.
You fight off zombies, you search for stuff to fight them better, and if your barricade is smashed down and you are bitten, it's game over, one bite, you're dead.

On the run.
Thats the Last Stand Part 1.
Part 2 has a great number of new additions to the gameplay. After 20 days of zombie fighting in the last game, the character escaped in a helicopter, all his troubles gone.
Of course, the helicopter had an infected survivor on board, and it crashed, you the only survivor.
Rather than just defending against the zombies this time, you must also gather supplies as you travel from city to city as you try and make it to Union City, where you will hopefully, this time, escape.

Of course, as with any good sequel, there are plenty of new features to add enjoyment to your zombie experience.

Fight dirty
The zombies in the second game come faster, in greater numbers, and often with melee weapons to beat the crap out of your barricade and your survivors. To help with this, you gotta find ways to get the edge on your undead foes.

As usual, you start with your trusty pistol, and quickly get your chainsaw. In the last game, the chainsaw was essentially the only thing you needed once you got it, but this time around, you have to frequently 'reload' (pull the chainsaw's string thingy for an annoying 3.5 second timeframe), and with the huge number of zombies coming at you it isn't quite enough, and you really need some extra help.

Traps. Specifically, bear traps, explodable gas cylinders and even landmines can be laid down before the fight, stopping zombies in their tracks.
As well as these, there are a selection of great new weapons, my personal fave being the bow and arrow (it sticks into them, which is funny, and has a low reload time), along with high powered assault rifles and even an RPG, although you don't get this until the last level (only available on the Armour Games version).
You can choose which weapons are assigned to the survivors (they can use all but the best four) and which ones you use, and with a good combination and a quick aim you'll have the zombies under control in no time, although you will undoubtedly come back and play for a second or maybe fifth time through.

Why are you still here?
With great effects, weapons, gameplay and undoubtedly the most realistic survival experience in a zombie game (except for unlimited ammo, which while very helpful is not really possible), Last Stand 2, and 1, are fun little time consumerss for anyone who needs training for the inevitable zombie uprising that is coming.
So what are you waiting for? Play it now!

Simply put...this is one of the best survival sims at there. You have to manage your time like in the last game to find survivors, weapons and make repairs to your barricade. But this time around you pick where you search and unfortunately not everywhere works. The biggest pain is when your fellow survivors dies from an errant zombie wielding a microphone. Another interesting thing was picking which survivor gets what weapons. Before they had their own default weapons but they are not really that great. Now you can give your other guys that uzi you aren't right now. Making survival that much more challenging since you have to decide which weapons are best to be placed out in the field. Also, I love having to decide if I should go ahead and move to the next town since now I have enough supplies, or should I search some more and hope to find that new weapon? This game just quickly becomes so much more alive than any other flash zombie sim I've played before. Overall this is an excellent game. I've played through a couple times and have yet to find all the available weapons and search every city. I can't wait to play it again.
