Equipment At Hand

Firearms
1 Romanian WASR-10 Assault Rifle
During the Cold War, all the Eastern Bloc nations mass produced their own AK-47 and AK-74s, and now they're selling in America for very reasonable prices. I won't tell you where I got mine, because then they'll have all sorts of people swarming them and prices will go up. But it is a good close to medium range weapon, with 2 30 round magazines currently in my stocks (more to come) and a cloth magazine holster that is meant to be worn around the chest. (Think the Viet Cong folks in all those 'Nam movies.) I also own the bayonet. This weapon is ideal for anything within 50 yards, as a head shot on a slow moving ghoul is quite possible for anyone who has some practice with it. Beyond that it becomes quite inaccurate, but the Soviets weren't interested in long range accuracy but rather large amounts of firepower going downrange. In close quarters the butt stock would be quite useful for knocking away the undead or any marauder, and the bayonet would be a fearsome weapon for a well placed thrust. And it's lightweight and short. To be brief, it's basically my prime weapon for any emergency attack.

WASR-10

4 12 Gauge Shotguns, All Pump-Action (Mossbergs and a Remington)
For raw short range killing power, these are unbeatable. The Mossberg Maverick (AKA the Model 88) is simply a joy to use, with low recoil and a very smooth slide. The Remington is a bit longer and slightly more unwieldy, but in a pinch it will do. One Mossberg is a tactical model, with a shorter barrel, flashlight, and sleeve for additional rounds. The rest are bird guns but are still all magnums. These are best served as defense weapons or for obtaining flying game such as dove, duck, or well, anything else that flies really.

Mossberg Maverick

1 .410 Single Shot Shotgun
While not an extremely powerful shotgun, it is still accurate and can deliver enough power to stop a zombie in their tracks. Fast reloading takes practice. This would be useful for a female due to the negligible recoil and ease of firing.

.410

2 .270 Hunting Rifles, 1 Bolt Action and 1 Pump Action
Powerful cartridge, flat trajectory, deadly at long range. The telescopic sights render them quite useless at short ranges when a hand to hand struggle is possible, but at distance they are without flaw for zombie, brigand, or delicious and nourishing large game such as whitetail or wild hog. If you can see them before they see you, it's pretty much over for them.

2 .22 Rifles, 1 Pump Action and 1 Ruger Semi Automatic
The .22 is often seen as a plinking rifle or something that only a child would use. Quite the contrary, it makes for a superior zombie slaying tool in many cases, due to the non existent recoil, relatively low report, and a solid lead projectile capable of destroying a zombie's brain. The pump has a low level scope, so precision shorts are quite possible at mid range. The semi automatic has a red dot sight, so all 30 high velocity rounds can be delivered with quick target acquisition times. It also has a side folding stock, so weight and space are afterthoughts with it. The ammunition for these rifles is not only small but very low priced as well, so hundreds or thousands of the undead could fall victim to them at little cost. In the event of food shortage, they could also be used effectively for squirrel, an animal that kept the South fed during the Great Depression. Moral of the story, don't be fooled by the low power of these bad boys.

1 .45 Colt Single Action Army Replica
Made by A. Uberti of Italy, this weapon is a relatively low-cost way to live the legend of the old west. With 6 shots (5 if you're carrying it as to avoid the hammer landing on a loaded chamber by accident), this weapon is almost certain never to fail or jam. The round it fired is a 250 grain solid lead projectile, and cutting a cross along the tip is a certain way for you to pack a round that will break apart on impact and destroy plenty of tissue. It is also deadly accurate at close range. (The first time I fired it I hit almost dead center of the bulls-eye!) The limitations with this pistol are quite apparent however. Each round must be ejected one at a time, and loaded one at a time afterward. This presents problems when fighting more than 5 attacking foes at a time if it is the only weapon at hand, but under regular daily use it should not present a severe issue. Ammunition is also quite expensive. This weapon is my sidearm for any hunting outing, and would undoubtedly see service in event of an outbreak.

3 Sig-Sauer Semi Automatics, 2 9mm and 1 .357 Sig
For semi-auto performance, these can't be beat. The Navy Seals carry them for goodness sake. Highly accurate and able to deliver sustained fire with several magazines, they are the top of the line in small pistol calibers. Not to mention that .357 Sig rounds are still deadly after penetrating concrete.

Knives
3 Winchester Bowie Knives
At 25 bucks, who could pass this up? Not only is it a large, heavy knife that would be very useful in a combat scenario, but it's not cheap junk either. I've used mine plenty for cutting meat, hacking small vines, and other outdoor uses, and it's still VERY sharp. A strong right cross with one of these in hand would send a zombie staggering back (possibly with severe damage that could take it out of the fight for a moment) and would almost certainly cause mortal wounds to any human who decides they want something that I have without asking nicely. (And handing over silver or some other trade able item) Even the sight of this in hand would most likely send a human attacker running. This goes on my belt first thing.

1 US Navy SEAL Designed Combat Knife
Medium sized and RAZOR sharp. This would deal katana-like wounds to any attacking force without some form of chain mail armor. Plus, the sheath has a magazine holder. Quite handy if you're storming a terrorist held position or just battling brain dead zombies.

Countless Hunting Knives, Various Makers
These will be essential when taking large game. Could also serve as combat knives in last resort situations, but that would render them useless for cutting animal flesh if they've come into contact with the infected.

Various Jackknives
Some have thumb assists, some are the old-timey variety. These will be useful for working or other various uses for a knife.

Fillet Knife
After the zombie scourge has been eliminated from East Texas, this will come in handy for making bass and catfish caught in local lakes and ponds into delicious and nourishing meals, and the convenient sheath will allow it to be strapped to a belt or LBE in a real emergency.

Clothing
4 Pair of Blue Jeans, Western Style
For working around the home and yard they will be extremely valuable, mostly due to their sturdy construction. They were made for working on ranches, riding in rodeos, and doing construction work, not going to the club.

4 Flannel Shirts
For winter operations, these will be critical for warmth. They also have at least one pocket for valuable supplies.

Countless T-Shirts
Mostly for summer wear or use during time not spent working.

Several BDUs, Mostly Woodland Pattern, One Tiger Stripe
The tiger stripe pattern will be a valuable asset in hunting and any situation where stealth is useful. They have been faded in the wash, which ironically makes them more useful for blending into Texas foliage. The woodland pattern will be substituted for them should they break.

Carhartt Jacket, Brown
The best all around winter coat for most Southern climates.

Baseball Caps, Various Logos
For everyday wear during work and standard patrol duty within the perimeter. Good sun protection and great for keeping rain out of your eyes. The NRA cap will be particularly useful in any situation involving dealing with partisans, people typically respect someone with some degree of firearm advocacy.

Belorussian Made Soviet Army Ushanka
The ear flap hat, with the Soviet red star and wreath pin. The latter serves no real use in this state, but the hat does keep you VERY warm when it gets cold.

Justin Work Boots, Speed Lace Variety
Tough, well cushioned, and the steel toes make working slightly less dangerous to the feet. Also could be a viable asset in a combat scenario.

Combat Boots, Black, Jungle Variety
Lightweight and well cushioned. Will be worn in the event that I need to get somewhere and do it quickly.

Supplies
Fishing rods, Various Sizes
These will be critical for finding food.

Multiple Tackle Boxes, All Fully Stocked
Full of fishing tools, including lures, pliers, and additional line.

Shovels, Square Bits and Entrenching Tool
These will be used extensively for digging slit trenches and makeshift latrines.

Axes and Saws
Will be used for collecting firewood and wood used for any fortifications needed. The hatchet could be used as an emergency zombie killing tool as well.

Flashlights
A maglight and a military angle head flashlight that will be carried on patrol or night work details. Maglight can serve as a blunt weapon.

Craftsman Mechanic's Toolbox
Primarily for maintaining vehicles, items around the home, and any tools needing repair.

WD-40 and Duct Tape
If you can't fix it with either of the two then it can't be fixed. WD-40 will also be essential for maintaining firearms. Duct tape will also be used for detaining suspected brigands.

Gun Cleaning Patches and Rags
Used for keeping firearms free of rust. Take care of your gun and it takes care of you.

Basic First Aid and Hygiene Supplies
Self explanatory.

Sunscreen
Very important for myself, because well, I'm about as white as they get. I have a large stock on hand, but once it runs out I'll have to use mud the way aboriginal people do.

Equipment Needs
.30-30 Winchester
I need one of these, for normal hunting and the event of outbreak. They're lightweight, target acquisition is fast, and it's accurate up to 200 yards.

.30 Carbine
Same qualities of the Winchester except for it being semi-automatic and with a lower range.

Water Purification Tabs
For getting water out of a stream.

More Flashlight Batteries
Cause they don't last forever.

S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedures)
Party Membership
No outsiders (Family members, close family friends) unless they have combat experience, 2 years in law enforcement, or at least 2 years as a hunting guide. We don't need anyone wasting resources or turning on us. Additionally, all members should contribute weapons and supplies.

Power Use
No unnecessary power usage. It is for preparing food, staying current on news of the outbreak, and keeping security lights on. That's it.

Duties
Male members will be on patrol duty in rotating shifts, and construction/repair details will be assigned based on ability and experience. Females will be in charge of cooking, cleaning, and any clothing repair. Gardening duties once the victory garden is set up will be shared by all.

Noise/Light Discipline
No loud noises. (Anything that can be heard outside the perimeter, the obvious exception being gunfire) Lighting will be used strictly as a security measure or for daylight cooking should the power fail.

Weapon Use
No wild shooting. Take your time and hit what you aim at. One round for each target is preferable. Ammunition will be scarce once supplies run out. Clean all firearms after firing.

The First Quarter
Plan A-SOTT(Somewhere Other Than Texas)

The news is out, zombies have been confirmed in any part of the Lower 48. At first sign, Immediately head to local gun store and clean the place dry of any and all 7.62x39, .270, .243 .22LR, .45 Colt, .357 Sig, 9mm, 12 Gauge, and .410 ammunition to bolster the family stock. Any variety of AK-47 magazine will be swept off the shelves, but preferably Russian 30 rounders. (Credit cards will come in handy here, if zombies are at the gates, my credit rating is the last thing on my mind.) Special emphasis will be placed on buckshot and slugs over bird shot, but as it is cheaper and partially decomposed flesh will almost certainly be more prone to damage by gunshot wounds, a round with a lighter kick will be welcome as well.) Second stop (directly after that) will be the Wal Mart Neighborhood Market for as much canned goods as possible, with canned beans and fish being high on the list. A direct route to the family home will be next, and the closet with the gun safe will be stocked with ammunition, in bags capable of holding several hundred rounds off ammunition. All shotguns will then be loaded, and Kalashnikov magazines loaded with 4 in the magazine pouch and one in the weapon. Male household members will have sidearms holstered and loaded at all times, with Bowie knives on the belts as well while inside the house unless sleeping, bathing, etc.. Tiger Stripe or Woodland pattern BDUs will be donned ASAP, not only for expediency in the event that a trek eastward is required at short notice, but also due to the fact that they are very comfortable for working and the numerous pockets allow for storage of many useful small items, from smokeless tobacco products to magazines and other ammunition. If the outbreak is distant the two main priorities will be securing against the chaos that will ensue should police efforts fail and making use of what perishable food is in the refrigerator should power go down. Leftovers will be consumed first, with meat, eggs and potatoes being cooked for large, hearty meals to gain additional stored energy and be able to work to prepare further. The bathtubs will be cleaned and filled with water. Fox News Channel will be turned on the television and played audibly throughout the house during daylight hours. Guard shifts will begin at sunset, with the person on duty being within arm's reach of the AK or a shotgun and anyone sleeping having weapons close by to be able to act quickly in an emergency. Contact will be made ASAP with family members and The Outfit for rendezvous planning. Cell Phones will remain on chargers until fully charged and will be charged at least once a day as long as cell service remains. Daily routine will be as normal as possible while the crisis unfolds, to allow the less prepared or more frightened to flee first or fight it out for supplies. The garage will be cleaned to allow for trucks to move inside, and they will be moved into the garage as quickly as possible and remain there during any sign of local panic. Any noise within the perimeter or close enough to be noteworthy will be investigated at once. Any suspected looter, vandal, or other thug will be met with as many loaded long guns as possible. If unarmed or carrying only a melee weapon, suspect will be ordered into the spread eagle position and will be detained for local law enforcement to deal with. Any sign of armed thugs will call for a defensive posture, with any breach of the house to result in multiple gunshot wounds to any and all attackers without warning. Evacuation preparations will commence, with boxes of food being packed, clothing being packed into suitcases and duffel bags, and medication and basic first aid supplies being loaded into an easy access kit. At first report of the undead moving into any state surrounding Texas or the undead crossing the state line, the evacuation to the East Texas compound will commence as long as the roads are clear.

Plan B-Texas is Infected First
Immediately collect and load all weapons, and then move them to the vehicles. Contact will be made with family and The Outfit. Collection of all other equipment, all cash, silver, and other valuable goods will follow. Bug out to East Texas location immediately.

Plan C-Dallas County Infection
Sit tight, make all preparations listen in SOTT Plan for the home. Contact family and Outfit members. Load and prepare for attacks. Kill anything that enters the perimeter without hailing.

Part 2: Bugging Out

The GMC pickup and Ford SUV will be loaded, and the path to the family compound will be followed at low speed to conserve fuel and reduce accident risk. One member of the group will ride in the back of the truck with a loaded weapon for defense.

Part 3: Digging In
"The Compound" is just my grandparents' home. It's on an acre of land, and there are enough beds, cots, and other furniture to sleep about ten people. Trees that will be used for firewood are behind the property. A .357 Magnum and a 20 Gauge shotgun are already there. A shed is located in the backyard and is stocked full of tools. It is unfenced, but a slit trench will be dug around the perimeter. The trench will be at least 8 feet deep to allow zombies to fall in and not be able to escape. This will be labor intensive, and a work crew will be assigned to work on it daily. A member with a scoped rifle will sit over watch at all times during construction. The driveway will remain, creating a choke point for any zombie that stumbles down it instead of into the trench. This choke point will also be useful for keeping brigands slowed down and in a kill zone at all times. Rationing will be necessary, with enough to keep members at current fitness levels.

Part 4: Living
Guard shifts will be kept daily. A garden will be planted with as many seeds as possible, with potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes being the key crops. Hunting for deer and hog will be a bi-weekly occurrence. Squirrels will be killed daily to keep them from eating the tomatoes and for a food source. Fishing outings will be made once zombie levels are assessed and deemed to be within Board games will serve as much of the entertainment. Should power be available, news will be monitored. Forming a collective with neighbors will be a viable and possibly necessary option. Will hold out here indefinitely.
