Marlin Model 336Model: Marlin Model 336
The Marlin Model 336 is what some would consider an oddity: a lever-action rifle (a "cowboy gun") in an age of black plastic, guns powered by electricity, and programmable grenades. And yet it continues to endure as a popular rifle in a bewildering array of calibers. The Model 336 has been in production since 1948 and is still going strong. Compared to the Winchester 1894, the quintessential lever-action, the Model 336 has a semi-pistol grip stock and side ejection, allowing for a more conventional scope mount. It has a unique Micro-Groove rifling system designed for copper jacketed bullets and is credited as #2 behind the Winchester 1894 in high-powered rifle sales.

A recent innovation is the "Guide Gun" concept, designed for hunting and wilderness guides as defense against wild animals; the Guide Gun variation has a barrel of about 16-19 inches, a large caliber such as .45-70, a 3/4 length magazine tube, fast open sights such as ghost ring sites with tritium or fiber optic inserts, and often a scout rail for mounting optics. Marlin offers its 336 model in several variations as a Guide Gun and gunsmiths have made similar rifles in various other calibers.

Complexity

The Model 336 is a very reliable gun, with the lever-action ensuring a minimum of parts and physics to keep the weapon working. As long as it's kept clean, it can be an excellent survival gun. One issue is the number of tools necessary to disassemble the weapon for cleaning.
