Basically,my advice as an MMA fan and student of Martial Arts,I can say the following for rookies.Avoid advanced technique.Do things that are natural,fluid and simple yet cause maximum damage for minimal effort.
If absolutely no purpose built or improvised weapons can be accessed,then prepare to use your anatomy in ways not thought of by conventional thinkers in order to ensure your survival. Against more than 2 walking dead,make a hasty escape.Otherwise try and get the zombie into a headlock and twist its neck with a violent force,akin to spinning a rusty valve AND KEEP YOUR FOREARMS AND HANDS away from the mouth of the zombie.Another move could be to grab the arm of the zombie lunging at you whilst moving to the side and sweep kicking them then standing(assuming you are wearing rugged footwear) and stamping their face until it resembles scrambled eggs and ketchup. For Humans,who are more aware and intelligent,as well as more capable,take a class in Krav Maga.

I've been studying Green Beret and Marine combatives, modern-day UAC/CQC, and a little kung fu... just to throw it into the mix. One problem is that a lot of the moves focus on strike-points that affect nerves and internal organs... that's great for human assailants, but I'm thinking that zombies will be able to wade right through that like so much swampwater. Not an expert, but it seems to me that the best bet is to focus on bone-breaking training... like koppojutsu...

Altho i agree that martial arts prowess used agenst shamblers would be relitively futile; many weapons based arts would be benificial (ie. phillipine stick fighting, with a good set of eskrima sticks) would be lethal to uncle Zed. But one must not loose sight of the fact that, unfortunatly, it is human nature for our species to pray upon the week. Thus, you will need to be skilled enough to protect yourself from hostile humans as well as Zeds. Im 33, and have trained in several martial arts since i was 7 years old. I can tell you, nothing is full proof. iveseen grand masters get trounced by black belts, and black belts get trounced by boxers. It's all relative. Dont stop learning. Take a lot of different forms. Bruce lee and the MMA have the right idea, the more martial arts you know, and become profficant in, will make you more rounded, and thierfore better apt to servive a life or death encounter.

im a realist. repeatedly ive read on these pages that zombs dont need air. i disagree. most likely a zombie is infected with a virus of some sort. every living thing needs oxygen. undead doesnt actualy mean they were dead and came back but more likely that they were mistakenly thought as dead since there were not good doctors back in the day. and so oh hey this guys dead (just in a brain fevering coma) and oh ****! hes undead! NO! zombs need oxygen.

| Dakdalton | Effectiveness of joint locks | 4 | May 19 2011, 3:38 AM EDT by LJ126 | ||||

We have a few threads on martial arts, but I wanted to begin this thread to discuss a more specific topic: joint locks.
Many martial arts teach control through pain or manipulation of joint locks (sometimes explained in terms of chi, or similar concepts). While I suppose that the undead would not react to the pain that normally gives us control in joint locks, the mechanics of many of them would still let us manipulate their movements (a figure-4 lock or arm-bar would still break an arm, or provide leverage). So I guess my question is this: since undead probably don't react to pain (at least in the same way that we do), how advantageous would breaking joints (arms or wrists, shoulder sockets, elbows, etc) be against the undead? While a broken hand or wrist would not prevent a zed from grabbing for a human, it would certainly weaken their grip from a structural standpoint. A broken neck might even paralyze a rotter. It seems to me that, when fighting zeds alone and unarmed, using locks to disable zeds by destroying limbs ( "defanging the snake," as in Silat) would be advantageous not only to the individual, but to any humans the zed might encounter later. I for one would feel a ping of pride at seeing a few of them with limbs disabled in a martial arts tradition. Seems to me that if killing is not possible, one should attempt to "defang" something. Thoughts?

never attack a horde of zombies with bare hands, its suicide, never cut the troat on a zombie, it doesnt breath, kicking with a solid front kick before finishing it off is the ONLY reason you would use marshall arts on a zombie with out it being a last resort, unless you find like, oh say, nunchucks or scis or a katana

I'm going to assume that the main weapons people would use for armed h2h are: two trench spikes or knives; a machete. But I'm open to suggestions on any other common weapins that might be used.

I think that general MMA would be the most proficient fighting style against undead. I am currently a black belt in american karate and began MMA almost 6 months ago. The incorporation of jujitsu in MMA teaches the user methods of escaping grapples, the muay thai part of MMA teaches the user powerful kicks, which would be very good at keeping uncoordinated zombies away from you. The wrestling pat of MMa teaches throws and other methods of keeping an opponent down and away from you. Finally, the boxing part of MMA could theoretically help you break the jaw of a zombie as stated in the above article. I believe that if you are serious about zombie survival you should take a class in MMA as it would help you exponentially.

The name might need work, but I can't really think of anything to cover that.
But anyway, a good martial art that I practice regularly would be judo. Now, it probably sounds odd to start promoting a martial art which's name literally translates out to 'the gentle way' for a time a violent as Z-day, but the concept of the art has many practical uses in the event of an attack Here's the lowdown. Standing sparring: Most of the moves in Judo involve throwing someone down as quickly, as hard , and ans efficiently as possible. There is no punching involved, and tripping is essential. Most of the time if you're going to be in hand to hand combat with a zombie you are trying to get farther away so that you may use your gun or wahtever weapon you are too close for. Not to harm, but as an effecient way to lead to the initial punsihment. Not to mention, instead of killing the zombie, you have thrown it at least five feet away from you, and have time to run. Of course, there are some throws that are practical suicide in a zombie fight, such as http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/ogoshi.htm but if you take a different move i nthe same direction and you can grab the zombies arms this move is perfect for when you get knocked down from the front as long as you are at least moderately fast http://judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/tomoenage.htm. Granted, standing judo has some good uses, but most of the moves involve pulling the enemy to you in order to throw. So great care must be exersized. and as I said before, some of them are pure suicide. It's a matter of elimination and efficiency. Another martial art that is helpful is boxing. This is a surprising effecint way to emmaciate a zombie. Put on a metal cuff and punch a zombie in the jaw. ANs since he's probably not a trained boxer with the knowledge of pulling his head back or side to side, he's likely to take all the force
