German Mauser Kar. 98kModel: Mauser 98k
Officially the Karabiner 98 Kurz, this rifle is more commonly known as the 98k. From 1935 to 1945 this bolt action rifle was the main front line service arm of the German Wehrmacht, with a total of over 14.6 million rifles built.

The 98k is a 5-round rifle with an internal magazine loading 8x57mm IS rounds, though some were rechambered after the war to 7.62mm NATO. Among the variants are the M48, a Yugoslavian copy with a shorter bolt action and stronger barrel, the M43, a Spanish copy with a straight bolt handle and other features, and Israeli Mausers that are sometimes chambered in 7.62mm NATO. 98ks are popular among civilian hunters and riflemen due to the powerful cartridge and cheap prices.

Complexity

The Mauser is a classic military rifle, designed in a time when the "rifleman" had a slow firing weapon and was meant to fire accurate shots over long distances. As such, the Mauser is very accurate and very rugged and solid. It's rather bulky and heavy and has a low ammunition capacity and rate of fire, limiting its use in close quarters.
