McNeil Island Prison, Steilacoom
--- view more defensible locations ---
City: McNeil Island State Prison
Neighborhood: Steilacoom WA
Building or Defensible Location: The whole island is a prison compound, lots of razor wire
Attributes:
Only accessible by boat and or helicopter, high chain link fence, lots of razor wire, guard towers, big heavy steel doors, 200 yard open kill zone, it's an island, surrounded by frigid water.
Pros:
- Windows (more like 8 wide 24 inch tall bullet proof glass) for visibility
- Heavy metal doors can be sealed/ heavy duty iron bars
- Rooftop view of approaching hordes
- Stocked with food/water/supplies( enough to hold 1500 inmates)
- Able to see clearly from guard towers for miles
- Massive acreage, prison was once self sufficient in the growth of orchards, farming, cattle/dairy, machine shops, deer are abundant, fishing from docks or shore, shellfish, has it's own power plant.
- Many small homes on island for the SRT
- Huge recreation facility to fight off the tediousness of sniping zombies on the shore of Steilacoom.
- Docks large enough to accommodate vehicle ferries
- Able to add other survivors without exceptional drain on resources
- Probably very soundproof, which may help keep zombie attentions to a minimum.
- Plenty of blunt weapons, projectile weapons, and easily improvised to become a weapon items.
- What is good to keep bad people in, is good to keep worse people out.
Cons:
- Only accessible by boat or helicopter, don't think zombies can swim though
- Must leave island to resupply, or to escort provisions from mainland (20 minute ferry ride) however, train lines are close to mainland ferry dock
- Every one would want to be there, some will have to be turned away
In the case of an outbreak, will you be allowing other survivors to join you here?
Yeah, if you're not an asshole or sporting any bite wounds.

One thing I struggled with was how much of a prison would have to be watched, so you'd need a decent size group to man it. Seems like you would also run the risk of systems failing as generators fail, which might reduce defenses if they aren't brick and mortar (electric fences, for instance).

This actually raises an interesting point on what is the best place to go to during an outbreak: A prison. One problem would be that you would have to deal with inmates, but you might be fortunate to find an inactive prison (Alcatraz anyone?) to go to. A prison does have all the sound advantages with very few disadvantages: One of the most solid defences you could find, the ability to feed many for a while, not very likely to be near large cities, and the fact that most can become self sufficient very easily. I guess the only real disadvantages are the lack of mid-term supplies (after the initial food is gone and before you can truly start growing or producing your own food) and the fact that most prisons will have inmates, which could be just as dangerous as a zombie (unless mutual cooperation could be found, but a few crazies would still compromise your safety).
Again, great idea. |

Though, zombies can swim. Without the need for breathing as stated by blayde they ARE able to head underwater but lack the coordination to swim. They could walk to the prison. Yet it would take a while. PLus the added salt in the water may deteriorate them quick. So this is a great plan.

Nice plan. Of course, as zeds don't have to breathe, they don't necessarily have to swim. :) Why don't you create a profile with us and take credit for your work?
