My Survival Plan
This all really depends on how I figure out that a zombie outbreak has happened and what size it is.
If it's a class 1 out break there isn't much need for worry. I'll make sure my bags are ready and call my family and friends to warn them. I'll advise them to stock up on canned or dehydrated food, purified water, and to avoid largely populated public areas (mall's and such). I'll also advise them to keep a look out for signs of an outbreak in their area and e-mail them a copy of my plans.
If it's a class 2 or higher outbreak. I'll complete the steps for a class 1 outbreak and take the following steps to strengthen the security of my apartment.
- Lock and board up the back door. This includes securing 2X4's to the deck on the inside and outside of the door to act as a stopper. With a drill and 1/2” X 7” concrete drill bit drill, drill through the wall on the left and right side of the door. From the out side drive a 1/2” X 10” bolt with large washer through the holes. Drill the same number and pattern of holes through another piece of 2X4 and secure to inside of door with wall bolts and washers. With 3” wood screws drill through the door into the backing board. Two or more backing boards may be placed depending on how I feel at the time.
- Lock and secure the front door. This includes securing a 2X4 to the deck on the outside of the door to act as a stopper. The inside 2X4 will secured with a heavy duty hinge on one side. The side with out the hinge will not be screwed to the deck. Instead it will be made secure by screwing a 4” long piece of 2X4 to the deck on the outside of the hinged piece on both the left and right side. This way I can keep the 3' long piece in the raised position to allow opening of the door but if needed I can drop the 2X4 to the deck and “secure” the door in a flash. When the 2X4 is in the closed or down position I'll have plenty of time to run crews through it to the deck to make it more permanent. I will also drill the same holes through the walls as I did the back door. This time I will only secure the bolts in place by running a nut down the inside of the bolt, bolting it to the wall. If needed I will be able to slip the 2X4 backing board onto the bolts and secure.
- Dismantling the stairway leading to my floor. There are two stairways to deal with, only the one leading to the front door of the complex is able to be dismantled. This will be easy as removing the planks with a crowbar. The stairway in the back is solid concrete built into the complex. There is a door at the bottom leading to a side ally. I will secure this door in the same fashion as I did the front door of my apartment but with everything in place. There is balcony on the second floor that over looks this door so I can check to see if it's clear outside before removing any of the boards.
- Securing the windows. This will be easy as I live on the second floor. All that is needed is to knock a small ledge off the wall. The ledge is about floor level and 2' wide. Will use an 8lbs sledge hammer to remove.
If no sign of Zed's I will then stock my Jeep with travel goods and reinstall my doors. At this point in time the public should be panicked and fleeing the city, clogging up the roads and generally running amok. I will wait out this initial panic stage and monitor all news. Once this reality sets in on everyone and the streets are cleared of people I will venture out to scout the area for both usable goods and the condition of the roadways. I will only have to travel 1 mile either north or south to check the roadways. The Coast Guard Base I'm stationed at is less than a mile from my apartment so I'll stop by there to see whats going on. There are a number of items I can gather from here, M-16's, Shotguns, M240B's, .40 cal SIG229's, ammo for all of these, bulletproof vests, and a years supply of MRE's for 100 people. There are also a number Coast Guard small boats that I can “borrow” to get to my next destination. Hillsboro/ Deerfield Beach is between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm/Palm Beach. Here I will “borrow” a pickup truck and pick up a few other survivors then make my way across the state via little known back roads through a very unpopulated portion of the state reserved for farming and cattle. These roads will dump me out in North Fort Myers. From here I will head to ST. James City, another unpopulated area, to pick up my family and supplies. From here our
group will have to make a decision to evacuate or stay. If evacuation is decided the choices will be either the Coast Guard base in Miami, one of the barrier islands around my home town, north to mountainous terrain, or to an undisclosed abandoned military fort located on an island in the Caribbean. If the decision is to stay then a suitable location will have to be chosen and I would have to further investigate these places before making a decision.
If the fort is decided on a few extra items would have to be brought along or retrieved from the mainland after we get there. I would like to have with us 3-4 claw hammers, 3-4 axes, a set of standard and metric wrenches and sockets, a 3/8" and 1/2" speed wrench to use as a hand powered drill, assorted drill bits, assorted hardware, and bricks. With these items I can build all kinds of structural reenforcements if need be. Once my self and the others are satisfied with the forts defensive capabilities we can take a look at building the long term survival items and also comfort items. Building these things will take a lot of resources so my self and one or two others will head out to plunder the mainland. Once we get to the mainland another boat, preferably a small barge will be located and inspected for sea worthiness and mechanical condition. We will anchor this barge off shore a few feet and use our small boat to stock it with supplies. Once loaded we will then bring both the barge and small boat back to the fort to begin construction of structures.
