My Bug Out BagThis is a featured page

My gear list (with reasons). All items on this list I already have. I'm an avid hiker and and in the US military.

DSA FAL: Ok, I just sold my custom Ruger Mini, took the money and bought a new DSA FAL. I went with the FAL over the Mini, AK47 and AR for a number of reasons. 1st: The FAL is chambered in .308, and ammo is way more abundant than the 6.8mm used by my Mini. 2nd: Again, it's .308 and has a much greater range and knock down than the 5.56 (AR) or 7.62x39 (AK47). 3rd: It is MUCH more accurate than the AK47 and is about even with the AR or M4 style rifles I've used. 4th: It uses the gas piston style operating system. I preffer this system over the direct gas system of the AR because the spent gasses do not enter the receiver at all. 5th: It is a very battle proven rifle. It is one of the most widely used rifles in the world and has been used by over 90 countries. I ordered mine with a collapsible stock because the original stock is just a little too long for me.

H&K .40: I chose this pistol for the same reasons I chose the mini. I've handled many other types and brands of pistols and H&K has always been by far the best. I'm carrying a pistol not for the zombies, but for the living.

Knife: I traded my woodman's machete for a leaf spring from a truck which I turned into a pretty hefty wilderness knife. I can use it to chop, baton, and even do draw cuts with it. I cut the ruff shape with a band saw then finished with a grinder and files. I then heated it to over 1400 degrees Fahrenheit and quenched it in oil to harden it. I haven't put the final edge on it with a wet stone yet because I haven't had time, but even with the ruff edge it has now it split a 2 foot piece of 2x4 with one swing. I also carry a Mora knife, used for everyday chores while camping. Both have a zero bevel grind for razor sharp easy sharpening.

Expandable Baton: Speaks for it's self.

Gear:
Packs: Ok, I now have another pack along with the BlackHawk X-3 R.A.P.T.O.R.. It's a modified Maxpedition Sabercat (see below). Its a hip mounted pack with molle attachments. In this pack I carry a heavy duty 8'x8' tarp, my hammock, a wool blanket, 1 pair of socks, my first aid kit, fire steel, tender, iodine tabs, sugar, salt,a small bar of camp soap, a small sewing kit, a small sharpening stone, paracord, and a compass. On the molle attachments I've added 2 M4 mag pouches that carry a total of 4 20 round FAL mags, a pouch for a nalgen bottle, and a pouch for a "Hobo" stove and light weight metal cup. I re-stitched the molle webbing on the side to allow for more attachment points and to add strength. I've also added a pair of Blackhawk load bearing suspenders.

In the Blackhawk raptor I carry: a sleeping bag, a ThermaRest sleep pad, a full change of clothes, my MSR water filter, 200ft of 10.2mm rope, a "book" style map of the US, GPS, toilet paper, a 1 litter cook pot with lid, food packets, and energy bars. It has a massive amount of storage space, it's light, and its very durable.

Shelter: You're going to need some type of shelter when out doors for an extended amount of time. I have a few different tents but in this case I'll be using a Hammock. It's a hammock with a bug screen and detachable rain fly all built in one package. I could climb a tree and hang the hammock out of sight and reach of any zombies. You can get them in camouflage to help with hiding. With this I could stay dry, warm, get the sleep I'd need, and be out of harms way. In the morning I would wake, survey the area, if needed, dispatch any zombies. Then I would gather my goods and be on my way. If nothing else I could at least use the rain-fly to escape the rain.

Sleeping bag: You'll need one of these. Even if you can't use it in the field it'll come in handy when you find some type of safe house. In a make shift safe-house, what are the chances that you'll have a bed or covers to keep you warm? A synthetic fill sleeping bag would be the best. It keeps it's warmth even when damp or wet unlike a down fill sleeping bag. At the same time it has a smaller pack size and is lighter which is good because the more you can carry the better off you are.

Water: You need water. I have an MSR water filter and also iodine tablets. Of course, you're aslo going to need something to store the water in.

First aid kit: Not for zombie bites or anything like that. But for the injuries incurred in you're travels. I actually care a set of surgical tools, medical sutures, and a topical anesthetic. If you're unhealthy or injured..... you're going to die.

Camp stove: I used to carry a MSR simmerlite. I now carry a homemade "Hobo stove". You're going to have to eat and you want to avoid eating raw meat as much as possible. On the trail, what else are you going to eat, besides what you catch or kill?

Cook-wear: You're going to need a something to both cook food on or in and something to boil water. 1 pot is all you'll need.

Compass and map of you're local area: Self explanatory.

Monocular/ Range finder: Bushnell Elite 1500. I use this to dial in the sights on my rifle and also to scope things out.

Portable GPS: Garmin Colorado 400. I take one hiking with me. It has a decent sized screen and displays maps with elevation gain and even city streets. Memory chips with the most up to date maps are available for almost every where in the world. At first sign of an out break I will go and get the rest of the chips that I need.

Signal Mirror: Self explanatory.

One of the most valuable user plans yet. Mainly because you stick to necessary stuff, that you already have. You thought of a lot of stuff most people leave out, like the sleeping bag and stove. Only mistake I found was that the 7.62 is the AK103, 47 is smaller.
