Office/Apartment buildingThis is a featured page

1) Start from the top and work your way down. If you clear a lower floor and work your way up, anything can wander in below you and hide. If you work your way down, nothing is going to wander in from the roof. One way to mitigate this vulnerability, should you decide to work from the ground-level up is to establish an Entry Control Point.

NOTE: There are differences of opinion on whether it is better to work from top-down or bottom-up when sweeping for zombies. The opposing idea being if you start at the top, you essentially cut yourself off from escape if things go south during the sweep.
One way to alleviate this concern is to have rooftop escape prearranged in the form of fire escapes, rope ladders or zip-lines in the event of disaster. (Thanks goes to beowulf2700 for raising the question)

2) A good idea to tell if a room has been compromised is to place a strip of masking tape across the doorway. This really only works on zombies. If the tape is broken - someone has been home. Also place across stairways.

Smart Kid.

Next time you come here, if this tape is broken it means
Someone has been home. Proceed with caution.

3) Keep a notepad and keep notes of any useful items you see, along with what room/apartment you saw them in. This way you don't have to come down the stairs with your hands full of crap - you can send a retrieval team later on.

4) Leave a note on the front entrance of the building as to when it was last cleared. This will prevent your retrieval team (or whoever else) from making false assumptions.

5) Take your time. Clearing buildings is a very deliberate, thorough process. If you don't have enough time to take it slow and do it correctly, then you shouldn't be doing it at all.

6) Arrange for Backup!! Make sure you have a backup plan in case the shit hits the fan. Try to keep at least two people standing by, no more than a few floors above or below you that can come to your aid at a moment's notice, should you require a little extra muscle. This "contact team" will also be available in the event that you actually find a survivor or two, and can safely escort them down to ground level without halting the sweep altogether.

I think what you could do aswell is put something like a strip of tape, and fold it so there is a space of air between it. (I mean just rolling a piece of tape up.) If you repeat this, you could put it in a doorway and if the tape is compacted and/or crushed, someone's home.
