The Hobby of sailing has always been a hobby robbed of me since I was too old for the optimist.
I still like the sea and sailing in general but it is not a hobby that I am capable of picking up due to being a very expencive and time consuming hobby.
This is a theoretical plan that I would start working on when/if my situation in life would allow it.
The Plan
So the plan is pretty simple.
-buy/build a ship
-fit it with the equipment you might need during long stays at sea
-"geocash" things in natural harbours along the coast and collect as needed. (Like a pirate)
-set sail of when SHTF with supplies for a couple of weeks and stay out of trouble.
The consept is that you will then have a mobile home that is not bound by the state of roads and you will have a good defence against zombies in the form of water. even if they can swim you will still be in a very good position of defence. You will probably still need to have a connection with land since the ship will need repairs and you will need supplies but you wont be at the mercy of luck that a horde of zombies wont trample your settlement. You can still grow things and stock supplies but you are capable of spreading it out over long stretches of coast. If raiders find one depot you wont be in a ton of trouble because you will have supplies in 5 other places.
Most important aspect is that you can look for potential settlements because they will probably emerge along the coast (almost all major cities are based near the coast or large rivers.)
The Ship
The First part of the plan requires you to decide what kind of ship you want to have.
It needs to be big enough to hold a small crew as well as being able to support said crew with supplies. It also needs to be small enough to be sailed by any number of crew members. If you and your girlfriend are the only ones who makes it to the ship you would probably want to be able to sail away with reasonable ease.
You also need to decide which kind of ship you would want to use since you will need to performe maintainance yourself and it needs to be suited for the types of water you will travel. Different models also means different types of layouts wich will ultimatly dictate ...
