The Hobby of sailing has always been a hobby robbed of me since I was too old for the optimist.
I still like the sea and sailing in general but it is not a hobby that I am capable of picking up due to being a very expencive and time consuming hobby.

This is a theoretical plan that I would start working on when/if my situation in life would allow it.

The Plan

So the plan is pretty simple.
-buy/build a ship
-fit it with the equipment and supplies you will need during long stays at sea
-"geocash" things in natural harbours along the coast and collect as needed. (Like a pirate)
-set sail when SHTF with supplies for a couple of weeks and stay out of trouble.

The consept is that you will then have a mobile home that is not bound by the state of roads and you will have a good defence against zombies in the form of water. even if they can swim you will still be in a very good position of defence. You will probably still need to have a connection with land since the ship will need repairs and you will need supplies but you wont be at the mercy of luck that a horde of zombies wont trample your settlement. You can still grow things and stock supplies but you are capable of spreading it out over long stretches of coast. If raiders find one depot you wont be in a ton of trouble because you will have supplies in 5 other places.
Most important aspect is that you can look for potential settlements because they will probably emerge along the coast (almost all major cities are based near the coast or large rivers.)

The Ship

The First part of the plan requires you to decide what kind of ship you want to have.

It needs to be big enough to hold a small crew as well as being able to support said crew with supplies. It also needs to be small enough to be sailed by any number of crew members. If you and your girlfriend are the only ones who makes it to the ship you would probably want to be able to sail away with reasonable ease.

You also need to decide which kind of ship you would want to use since you will need to performe maintainance yourself and it needs to be suited for the types of water you will travel. Different models also means different types of layouts wich will ultimatly dictate the equipment.

The kind of vessel I have been looking at for now is in the form of trimarans by Arthur Piver. He is one of the fathers of the trimaran and designed most of his ship for the expressed purpose of home building. The goal was that anyone should be able to buy his plans and build a ship without proffessional expertise. This is something that intrigues me since I would like to build the ship myself because it would give me the abilty to dictate the floor plan to my liking and I would also have a complete understanding of the different materials that goes into the craft.
The Trimaran
Advantages:
- High load capacity
- Great stability due to its 3 hulls
- large deck surface
- good speeds even with heavy loads.

This is a survival plan that I have been thinking about for some time and since I dont know much about sailing any points and suggestions are welcome however trivial it is. details will be added whenever I feel like it.
Suggestion on possible ship models and equipment would be appreciated
