PedroAsani's Survival Plan - Part 3: Digging InThis is a featured page

(Time to completion: around 10 years)

Mainland living has been deemed too hazardous, given the undead range in one year is 5,972 miles (Assuming a speed of 60 feet per minute). Countries must fulfill specific criteria to be picked.

Accessible by both plane and boat.
Economically and politically stable.
English spoken.
Suitable location for compound.
High enough population to allow pre-Zack living to be commensurate with current living standards.
Low enough population to lessen Post-Z Day threat of swarms.
Easy to obtain either citizenship or permanent residency. (Whilst not required for a land purchase or to build a vacation home, in the event of a disaster most islands are expected to seal the borders to all foreign nationals. Being a citizen whilst not guaranteeing entry would increase the likelihood.)
Allows dual-nationality.

Current countries being considered for BOL:

Country Population Immigration Requirements Reason for disqualification
Curacao
145,000
Residency permit requires: Proof of finances, birth certificate, CRB (2 months old at most), Medical insurance
Aruba
110,000
Residency permit requires: Proof of finances, 10 years addresses, CRB (2 months old at most), valid smallpox vaccination certificate (3 years old at most), clean medical certificate (30 days old at most)
Bonaire
15,000
Residency permit requires: Bank deposit showing £9,000, birth certificate, CRB (2 months old at most), Medical insurance

All these countries are islands.

So as my research grinds on, the three islands I have chosen appear to have one stumbling block: the bureaucracy involved in building something like this is quite onerous. The reason is because much of the suitable plots of land are close to National Parkland.

Which is making me consider other locations again. Mainland locations scare me, just running the numbers. However, if the map of US population density is any good, I might reconsider building in one of the central states. But really, which of them are good candidates?

I figure that since a lot of you live there, you might know.

I'm looking for a place that is fairly flat, but a slight incline is preferable. Well water is a must. A remote and isolated place, so nothing near cities. The ability to run power and phone lines would be nice, but that can be done almost anywhere now.

Gun laws? As relaxed as possible, but really since I will only be stockpiling semi-auto rifles and plenty of bullets, I don't need anything special such as the right to hoard claymores and dynamite.

Taxes? Again, low as possible, but since this is going to be a business rather than a personal purchase, it's the corporation taxes that I would need.

Climate? Temperate to tropical, the main thing is rainfall and winter. Just enough rain to grow crops, and a short winter spell to make the growing season long.

So where would you build my BOL if you were choosing, and why?

Dakcenturi Considerations 2 Jul 9 2010, 8:47 PM EDT by Dakcenturi

I noticed in your initial thread you wanted to build this to be sustainable in the event of no apocalyptic event. If that is true then there are a couple things to consider, actually even in the event of an apocalyptic event these are things to also consider.

Islands: While providing some amount of sanctuary being it is isolated from large land masses this also works against you in a couple of senses. First off, in the effort of completing the facility you are going to be paying much higher costs as you'll need to import goods as most island nations lack the products locally. Second, during construction in the event of some high probability natural disaster (ie Hurricane) your going to possibly run into issues and worst case scenario destruction. Third, in the event of power loss you will have to deal with the heat. You can always put more clothes on for a colder climate, but you can only take so much off to deal with heat. Finally in the event that the island does become compromised you are going to have a harder time retreating to an alternate location.

Hope that helps bring up some points for consideration to help with your planning. I am sticking to the mainland and just plan on securing the location against invasion through natural/artificial barriers and active defense measures. I figure being in the rural location I am planning it should be some time before I would have to worry about significant numbers of invaders.

just got some advice to help you choose your island:
Aruba: Even population destribution, don't speak english and too many immigration requirments
Curacao: Polictically stable and speaks english, big population
Bonaire: Fast growing economy, no major cities and low population.
As you see, every island has it's own flaws and this is your choice to make. I hope this helps you because you've definatley helped me. See you on Z-day.
