Each person will be issued with the following on Z Day.
1 Bolt action rifle with noise suppression and scope
2 Handguns with
silencers,suppressors, 10 magazines total
2 Trench spikes
1 Machete
1 Large flashlight
1 Small flashlight
1 Leatherman multi-tool
1 Knife
1 Personal medical kit
1 Box of waterproof matches
1 Box of safety matches
1 CB radio
1 Emergency ration
1 Weeks worth of water purification tablets
1 Water canteen (1 litre)
1 Watch
1 pair of High-powered Binoculars
1 Compass
1 Map of the area, printed on cloth (Detailed 10-mile radius map on one side, general 50-mile radius map on the other)
1 set of earplugs
Each item has a specific reason. Bolt action rifles will force you to make each shot count. Noise suppression will lower the chances of your shot being heard. The two handguns are so you can switch from one to another instead of reloading, or if one jams. They are NOT for dual-wielding. (No-one is John
Fucking******* Woo, not even John
Fucking******* Woo.)
The trench spike are for close-quarters where it is impractical to swing a machete. They are the last resort weapon. The machete is for dispatching incapacitated zombies, and useful for opening thin wooden doors. 2 flashlights, one for outside, one for inside and backup. The personal medical kit will have items such as antiseptic, needle and thread, bandages, etc. The reason for two different matches are that the safeties should always be used first, since waterproof ones are last resort fire-starters. The CB radios will be
rechargeable (we have solar power at the base.) The emergency ration will be things like power-bars initially, and then substituted for whatever we can make with the crops as the power-bars expire.
The reason for the watch is so that everyone will know what time guard changes, meals, work rotations and the like will happen. They will either be motion powered, or simple wind-able coil and spring. Binoculars for scouting the perimeter. Compass for path-finding if needed, and the cloth map because a paper one would fall apart when wet. The earplugs are in case the moans get too constant.
This equipment will be carried at all times, probably with most of it worn on a utility belt. However, the CB radio, watch, binoculars and rifle are expected to be the only items used on a day to day basis. Expeditions into town will be by exception only. The base is completely self-sustaining, so maybe one run to a hospital for equipment or drugs would be needed. All this is in case the base is overrun and an emergency escape is needed.
Note: The Trench spikes will need to be custom made. It has been pointed out that the current designs (M1917 and M1918) have flaws. Most notably, using the guard as a knuckleduster can snap the tang. Also, the guard does not protect the fingers or hand as well as it could.
