PedroAsani's Survival Plan - Part 4: LivingThis is a featured page

Once the war with the undead has ceased, and humanity has largely been wiped from the earth, the survivors here will be charged with the daily tasks of producing food and maintaining the compound. Farming and rearing livestock will be the main occupations.

Because the growing season in a tropical climate is year-round, it will be possible to stagger the sowing, tending and harvesting so that the people required on a day to day basis will stay the same. Sowing needs many people for a short period of time, tending needs just a few for a long time, and harvesting requires everyone for a short, brutal intense period. By keeping the numbers required even, it allows for scheduling guards, night guards, etc.

Using the radio equipment, the local and global situations would be monitored. If assistance can be offered, it will. Mostly though, no broadcasts will be made from the long range equipment, only the short range CB's will be used on a regular basis. The comms station is located in the Castle, and will need to be manned all the time. Because it is a fairly technical, sedentary position, it would need to be manned only by those qualified, but in longer shifts of twelve hours apiece.

As the threat dies down, the compound will be able to establish an external perimeter. The internal fence panels will be used to extend a line outwards, allowing more animals to be reared. To allow for extra livestock, grain stores will need to be built up, enough for 5 years. (Soft grains hermetically sealed at cool temperatures will last 8-10 years.) These would need to be either planted outside the walls, or in place of existing crops from the table in the Food section. Therefore the management of the livestock would need to be done carefully to ensure the resources are not stretched too thin.

To counter Raiders driving vehicles too close to the base, a trench will need to be dug outside the walls. This will be 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep. It will be 800 feet away from the base. This is close enough to allow the Guards to keep an eye on it (and prevent Raiders bridging or filling it in) without it being too close and giving Raiders plenty of cover.

A Scouting group will be able to travel a radius of 10 miles on foot (roughly the distance able to be travelled from dawn to noon, allowing for exploration and return by sunset.) to establish contact and scavenge. This will be a rarity rather than a regular occurence, with only medical supplies and water filters needing to be brought back form the outside. If the island has been kept free from infection, then the Scouts will be allowed to head to the ocean to fish, and to collect salt.

Several people have mentioned the threat of Raiders. Military hardware is available from the Antillies Military on Aruba and Bonaire, but not Curacao. However, there is typically a token military presence on each island. These are likely to be the most difficult people to deal with should they become hostile. Automatic weapons, RPG's, heavy artillery, grenades and explosives will make short work of these defenses.

Should this be an issue, additional defenses will be needed. The likelihood of needing these outweighs the cost and space they would take up. Therefore I need ideas of what improvisations I could make. The only tools and provisions are those in the base, and around it.

If the Raiders demands are excessive, then it will probably turn violent. Since I have an elevated position, and strong cover, then hopefully there would be few casualties on the defending side. The tier system is deliberately designed to allow the defenders to fight a retreating battle. Whilst half the defenders are running to the next wall, the other half can provide suppression fire. They are then covered as they fall back.

Blatantly stolen from Akerris is the idea of trading for metals. However, I am not just going to limit it to gold and silver. Since I expect that I will be able to trade a large surplus of food to outsiders, I would be able to ask for iron, steel, copper as well as precious metals, gems and jewelry. This would enable me to build up stores of useful goods for rebuilding in the long term, as well as future financial security for those in the base.
