What do you all think about using the Appalachian Trail as a survival resource/refuge during a zombocalypse? The intent would be to make it to a trailhead with your survival buddies, BOB, rifle and hiking/camping gear, abandon your vehicles and then hike the trail. The trail is isolated from major population centers and follows the ridgeline of the mountains in most areas, making it unlikely that you would encounter very many zombies or other survivors. You could observe houses and villages on the valley floor and make raids on unoccupied settlements to supplement supplies when needed. Streams and game are plentiful on the trail, so access to food and water is manageable as long as you don't have a sensitive palate. Time spent on the trail could be used to search for a long term stronghold - there are many cabins, vacation homes and isolated farm houses in the Appalachians. The biggest problem I'm having is how to stay safe at night, which is when any slow zombies who have been following but stayed out of sight will catch up and stumble into your encampment. If you are hiking with a group you could set watches and camp off the trail in an area with a lot of leaf litter and underbrush so the noise of the approaching zombie alerts you. If you're alone, though, sleeping on the ground will be deadly. Could you use a tent hammock in the trees? Could you build a tree stand every night and sleep in it? The tree stand is the best option I've come up with so far. Comments, suggestions?

Your Name: Jennifer Your location:Brooklyn, NY Tell us: Is your plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere? Anywhere. But I do live near one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the 5 boroughs, and should the dead rise from their graves, my house is at ground zero. Will you be staying in your home or headed somewhere else? My husband and I have agreed to go home asap in the event of a Zombie attack. We will hold up there for as long as we need to. Stock up on dry food and gather rain water on the roof. If you're heading out, how do you plan to get there? We'll head out if things get too hairy. First of all, I wont make the fatal mistake of taking along anything that requires gas or ammo. We'll invest in Carhartt coveralls (for the biting), take as much camping gear as we can load onto our bikes and head out to the middle nowhere. Dont forget iodine tablets!! Got anyone you want to take with you? My husband and my dog. Unfortunately, we will let the cat go. How will you communicate with the outside world, or do you plan to go the hermit route? Fuck 'em. Hermit all the way. How are you planning to get food and water? Dry goods and rain water. What's your weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that? Husband - Cricket bat and machete Me - Katana Got a survival philosophy? I want to make it till the end. I want to be one of the ones chosen to repopulate the planet. Are you willing to hook up with other survivors? Well see... Is your plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist we may have heard of? All Zombie related movies, books, survival guides, etc. Particularly "28 Days Later" and "Shaun of the Dead".

Load up supplies I have, go to the Big box stores 9 (Wallmart, Meijers, and etc.), get all the food, guns, ammo., gas cans, med. supplies, water, and etc.. Go fill van and gas cans. go to Farm supply store. I know alot of you are going to question my logic . But no one would go there. Everyones heading to Wallmart, infected or not. And they are packed with (axes, shovels, fencing - to secure doors and windows., clothing, boots, gloves, generators, seeds, potting soil, grow lights, tools, and alot of other very helpfull gear. If I have time and its clear I would go fill as many container with gas that I can. Put fencing over the doors and windows. Fill up as many containers with water as I can so when the water stops flowing. Stack ridding mowers and etc. infront of doors. Start growing some food, in tubs. Cut a hole in the roof ( for emergencies, set-up rain water catching tarp, and look around ).

I have heard it suggested that schools and hospitals are best places to "hole up" and survive a zombie horde. Not the case in metro chatty. There are a number of schools and hospitals that are a million years old each. None of which stand any chance against the 190,000 in chattanooga and surrounding cities. Chattanooga is a city that sits on the line of georgia and Tennessee with the tennessee river winding through it. There are also several mountains that tower over the city. Now believing Max Brooks' theories considering the mobility of the average zombie, boats are out of the question. There are plenty of access points where water bourne zoms could come ashore, and there are points shallow enough where bottom draggers could pose a threat. The downtown area is flat valley and rolling hills, dotted with residential areas and industrial complexes and an aproximate 100 square mile area of public and government office, stadium and college buildings. There are over a 1000,000 people who commute and congregate in the downtown area daily. These conditions illustrate insurmountable odds against survival in the downtown or surrounding residential areas. So what is a chattanoogan to do? When it comes to fight or flight my first though was flight. Interstate 24 and 75 run right through the city. Knoxville, Nashville, and Atlanta are the most accessable cities around, however, these highways will most likely be jammed with motorists...panic driven motorists. My best assesment thus far is the surrounding mountain terrain. I live in a house that is 68 years old and not very well defensible. I have a economical four wheel drive and enough firearms and woodland now-how to traverse and survive in such an area. There is a large park area that I studied on google maps that is north east about 35 miles from downtown chatty, and in that area is where I hunt and shoot. Vertical rock faces along will easily defendable locations prove the best place for temporary survival.

i would first head to my dads gunsafe, get his guns, blow my way out of my hood, then i would got to this mall roof that has a sport store GUNs! and food court and just bout everythin u could think of. i would blook off the doors f the mall, put signs on the roof for other survivors to come and throw a roof ladder of the roof for em to climb.then i would bring all supplys i needed to the roof, including all the food guns ammo tarps tents etc i could get my hands on. then i wolud bring some fridges up to store food but id have canned food to. then i would destroy every set of stairs from the ground up,destroy all ways to the roof (except for the ladder on the side for other survivors) reminding u that everyting i colud find for supplys inluding tarps and tents to sleep under are on the roof. THEN i would make a zipline that went like 1/2 a mile away from the mall to excape if we were overrun (i dont know how that could happen cause all ways to the roof except the ladder for survivors are destroyed and zombies cant climp and if they started to i would just shake em off the ladder and pull it up) then run to anywhere we could get to but thats if we were overrun so... anyway i would make molotov cocktalis to kill time and for defense in case and maybe get in some target practice but other than that i would just wait for other survivors to come to my impenetrable fort check em for bites and just wait out the disaster cause id be all set so... i win!!!

I live in a neighborhood with <2000 people, and a hospital less than two hundred yards away. There’s a High school half a mile and a Conoco a mile south, and another neighborhood two miles away and past a ridge to the west. North is a large and almost uninhabited plain, and to the east is a large sandstone cliff. So, the only direction I have to worry about zombies coming from is the south and my own neighborhood, as well as the hospital.
My house is two stories, with cheap wooden stairs, four bedrooms, and two full bathrooms upstairs. At immediate signs of a serious outbreak (if I see more than 15 Zs), I’ll fill 2 bathtubs, 2 sinks, and many bottles with water, and stock the guestroom with all the food in my house. I’ll use my ax to kill the stairs, and a helicopter rope I have to traverse between floors. My family will barricade the first floor with all the wood my dad collects, while I take all our money to Conoco, load up on canned and dehydrated food, bottled water, and gas, and come back home with it. We will armor and disconnect our garage door from the electronic opening/closing mechanism, keep the pickup in the garage, and siphon the gas out of all our other vehicles. Hopefully, by the time I’ve picked up all the supplies our money can buy, story one will be barricaded sufficiently. We will collect all the tools from my dad’s shed and store them in the 2 sleeping rooms; the food and water will be stored in the guestroom; the gas will be stored in the master bedroom and garage. To be continued.

I have a plan it involves 15 friends and family. We have a location ( will not disclose because of safety issues ), It is in a rural area but less than a mile from 2 big box stores, 3 box grocery stores, 3 gas stations, 2 lumber yards, 4 gun shops. We gather at the first sign. We are all stocking up on ammo., food , med., and etc. . Most of us get together every week to shoot. Our location is a factory with only 7 doors, thick brick walls, flat roof ( for sniping and gardening ). I personally have an AR-15 ( 30 - 30 round mags., cleaning supplies, and 3000 rounds of .233 ), Mossburg 500 12gauge 8 round pump ( 1400 rounds 3" oo &ooo Buck shot and rifled slugs ), M 1 garand (80 - 8 round mags., 1200 rounds ), Glock 21 ( 14 -13 roound mags., 1000 rounds ), Beretta 92 ( 15 - 18 round mags., 1500 rounds ) Jennings 9 9mm. ( 10 - 13 round mags ), Hand forged Katana, Military first aid kit,&pack, fatigues, axes, and other basic supplies. We also have 2 generators ( large to run electric, and small to run gas pumps. Just getting out of the Marines 6 months ago I have a good idea of what we will need Ive been fighting in Iraq for 4 1/2 years.

Seeing that I am paranoid to hell a bout this stuff, me and a few of my friends have started our survival plan. We already have two trucks reinforced with aluminum plate siding. The windows on the trucks are covered by cage. We also have an older city bus which we have modified as well. Seeing that most places think the only way to kill a zombie is to take its head off or damage the brain, we have M4A1 assault rifles. Building up on ammunition is also a good idea. We figure safely each of our trucks can hold up to four Full grown men and about 400 pounds of ammunition for the rifles and or pistols. Most people say a 9mm semi automatic pistol is a pussy weapon. Well it will put a bullet through your head just the same as any other gun so when you're a zombie and I blast one through you I'll just laugh. We don't need to be on a military base because military bases have a lot of people as well as major cities. You want to stay away from highly populated areas as best you can. The weapons on a military base however may be worth making a risk to stop buy and grab some. If you are willing to take that risk make sure you take no stupid people with you. Also have a larger truck that can hold much more ammunition and firearms. That way your trip isn't for nothing. If someone you know and love gets bit or scratched, i know they are loved but do them a favor and put a bullet in their head seeing as most are convinced such an infection can be spread by these actions. Only resort to hand to hand if needed. We have built a 10 foot brick wall with barbed wire around the top of the wall around a 6 acre property. Dug a ditch around the property put a drawl bridge in and made sure that the spikes in the ditch are sharp and ready. Burn all the bodies and always be prepared. Only leave your safe zone when needed and if you are over run. Have a fall back point as well. If your the last one left...Sorry dude. =]

I live by some hills and a forest, so i can easily hop in a car and drive out to there if the roads arent blocked. If they are then i can easily just run out there and stay on the run, my BoB contains a shelter as it is, and I have a rifle and cricket bat. I'm also planning to make a bow so i can easily hunt food in the wild. I would stay on the run till I'm either caught or the invasion is over.

I'll not give away too much, but I live one mile north of a National Armory and one mile south from Smith&Wesson. Also there is the city DOPW (Department of Public Works) within a mile as well as the Indian Motorcycle Museum and what we call "Gasoline Ally". All of these thing are within a one mile radius from my home. There are more resources are within this "Circle of Supply" area, so I will be well equipped for my second stage plan....

My plan has two phases: 1, where the infection hasn't reached me yet: I live on an island. I simply get the supplies ready... 2. Once the infection reaches me, I have to go to my high school and set up a barricade. My high school is built like a fortress, with big iron gates, and several layers between the courtyard (grass) and the outside. I'd have to barricade windows, but with the size of my school, supplies are not lacking. We also have a cafeteria, which should be stocked. The school is four miles from a small town, which, although problematic, is lowly populated, and very well stocked. The school is surrounded by woods, and what isn't wood, is very arable. No moltov. Long run, I would get there using my truck (if low level infection), which has both lots of cargo room, and plenty of off-road capability. I would let some people in, for help, and would develop a satellite system of other survivors, but wouldn't want more than fifteen with me. The nearby town is also on the water, and I have the training and equipment for long-distance kayaking. The town also has a small nurses facility, as well as a drug store, for medical supplies. A longer distance away, is a town with another supper-market, a hardware supply store, and a gas station. In between the two towns is a gun club. Ammo, food, and supplies are a short distance away, and I can survive a siege for quite a long time.

The very first thing I personally would do, if I was at my home, is that I would aquire our weapons we have in our home. 1 Double Barrel Shotgun with 2 boxes of shells in seperate places in our house (easy to aquire). We also have two standard pistols with 2 boxes of shells for each of them along with the immence firepower of the shotgun. If its just standard zombies like Dawn of the Dead the pistols and our houses defensible position would be great to hold out while my houses rations hold us together. If its more like Resident Evil with assortments of "Mutants", the shotgun would blow them to hell. Then I would eventually move through my residency towards the local mall with our car which always has a full tank of gas to get me there. Once at the mall I will clear out all remaining zombies and stay there. Judging by their decay rate from most movies, we would eventually outlast them. If not, then we could always play with the guns from the gun store across from my mall (wierd coincidence like Dawn of the Dead huh?). But unlike the movie we would have proper transportation for the treck. We wouldnt be caught unawares. Once all of the zombies were distroyed around us, we would leave the mall to clear out infected areas and to look for other possible survivors. Hopefully no one of us would get bit, but if they did, I would have no problem dispatching them right then and there. What must be done shall be done.
