The Container: An Altoids tin. You may use round or rectangular as you please. Altoids are fairly common around the world. If you absolutely can not get Altoids you may use a different container of about 114cc.
The Challenge: Put together a pocket survival kit with as many applications as you can. The challenge is more to test your inventiveness than the number of items you can fit in the tin, although that is fun too. 2 Points for every item in your kit and its primary use. 1 point for every extra use. Zero points for "use for many things". Score yourself! For instance, the snare wire listed on the page: 1) Snares 2) Fishing line 3) Making a bail on a tin can for boiling water. Score = 2 points wire and snare + 1 point fishing line + 1 point bail = 4 points. Don't have time or money? Use the Pocket Survival Kit from the page (upper left corner of this frame).

I have a little survival kit like this that I keep with me all the time. I use the square altoids container. I have a BIC lighter, fishing line, 2 hooks, small pocket knife wrapped in a few dollars (this cuts noise from the knife rattling in the container), band aids, 2 sticks of gum, and a small spool of thread with needle. I carry this all the time and it is so handy. My saying is this kit is to keep me alive long enough to get to my bigger bag. I can even use it for day to day uses. Example. I was watching my 6 year old cousin the other day at a playground and fell. Instead of going all the way home to get band aids I just pulled one out of my kit and gave it to her. A few months ago the power went out at my house during the storm. I grabbed my lighter and found the candles. All without stubbing my toe. I don't use the pocket knife to much because I always keep a better one with me. But the money comes in handy for emergencies. Considering I made this for about $2 it is definitely worth it!

I was just wondering if you can show how all this fits in the Altoids can. And if I have the square version will it still work? I mean, its an awful lot to fit in one small thing... Also, if I got a good swiss army knife, what would that replace in this kit?

I was wondering if anyone could help me to design a small, pocket carried urban survival kit? It could be completely new, or based around the Altoids tin kit on this page. I have a tin and a pocket knife, does anyone have any suggestions? Note: I don't have ready access to military surplus or sportng goods. I'd like it to be stuff i can pick up at say, the hardware or convenience store

Kit tin: two slid open mint boxes
Items: Pocket knife in one, extra bullets and fire starters in the other. Along with my backpack and other gear, I'll keep those in my pockets for quick use. They slide open quickly so I can draw the knife if I need to, and the bullets can be easily loaded into the chamber of my gun. One shot is all I need to send a zombie back to hell where he belongs. Ten bullets can fit in one of those boxes, so I can shoot ten more before they get close enough to fight melee. In that case, I'll have my team working along side so we're not overwhelmed by bodies.
