Problems Other Than Zack |

Version 21 - view current page

As you may know, on Z-Day or whatever you decide to call it, there will be many problems other than Zack. Help me list a few of them, and possibly how to avoid them.

  1. Hostile survivors- These are much more dangerous than any zombie. These can kill kill you from 1,000 yards out. They can communicate. They can do much more than a horde of zombies. The best to avoid this is pick a remote location short of outer space, the bottom of the ocean, or an underground facility.
  2. Quislings- Quislings are a creation of Max Brooks from World War Z. Quislings are normal humans whose minds have snapped and believe they are zombies. They will attack you, and could be mistaken for an actual zombie. The best way to determine if this is a quisling or a zombie is to shine a flashlight in their face. A quisling will blink, a zombie will not.
  3. The threat of being nuked- It is presumed that countries will fire heavy ordinance at any city deemed "overrun". It is obvious that any city will at least have some living humans in it. To avoid this, avoid any and all large cities.
  4. Thirst- Thirst is a VERY serious threat. Without water, you will last 3 to 4 days, as water is the 2nd most important bodily fluid besides blood. ALWAYS be sure to have water ready. If trapped at sea, do NOT drink salt water. Do not drink directly from any water source. Install a rain-catcher on your roof, and even try to clean that water. With nukes flying and all of the smoke and other effects to the environment, almost all water will be too contaminated to drink.
  5. Hunger- Hunger is also a serious threat. Always carry healthy food, such as yogurt, fruits, and vegetables. If you eat only snacks for the duration of a class 4, or even 3 outbreak, you will probably end up overweight and in poor physical condition.
  6. Sleep- With Zack running around you both in real life and in your dreams, how will you get sleep? In turns with your fellow companions of course, provided you have some. If you have no companions, sleep on the roof of a building. Do not take sleeping pills, as they will keep you sleeping as you are eaten alive.
  7. Poison- Although it is unlikely someone is going to poison your food or poison the air intentionally, it is possible that planes dropped poison gas on a city you need to pass through or a fire released poisonous fumes into the air.
  8. Weather- Whether in the Arctic tundra, the Saharan desert, or the concrete jungle of Los Angeles, there is usually a weather problem. Dress appropriately. If in a cold place, wear multiple layers of clothes. If in a desert, which you shouldn't be, wear a thin layer of clothes that covers your entire body.
  9. Lack of gasoline- Gasoline is important for Molotov's (if you make them) and vehicles, most of which use gas. Without gasoline, a car is simply an assortment of metal parts.
  10. Low Morale- As most people will see loved ones being eaten, or their homes burned down, or things to that effect, many people will be sad. This can cause misdirected rage, suicide, homicide, or even turn them into a quisling. Keep the morale up by letting people vent their rage on zombies, or pillows, or other things that can't be hurt. Show them children's shows. Be creative.
  11. Predatory animals- Although any and ALL animals should instinctively flee Zack, there is no guarentee that some may attack you during your travels. Hopefully, no animal will become a zombie besides a human being. Beware of insects primarily, and also feral dogs. If in a location with animals such as lions, tigers, or bears, try to hunt them for food. Sharks can be a very large threat at sea.
  12. Paranoia- You can easily became overrun with fear. You could always think you hear the moans, see them around every corner, or smell their rotting flesh. If this is true, ask another person if any of those are also true for them. Otherwise, you are probably just paranoid.
  13. Booby Traps- Some survivors will have set traps for zombies to limp into, and quite a few of these may remain long after the survivor has moved on or passed on. If clearing any building or area where a survivor may have holed up, watch your step.
  14. Loneliness- If you are a person who knows many people and has many friends and suddenly are all alone in a frightening world, you may last only a couple of days before you commit suicide or do a suicidal act. It is best to be in a 3-10 person group. Too many people will add to the noise and chance of being discovered by hostile survivors or zombies.
  15. Disease- Whether it is a minor cough or a terminal cancer, it will hamper you everywhere you go. The best ways to avoid disease are to bathe regularly, burn or bury corpses, cook all food properly, and not smoke.
  16. Minor Injuries- Even something as small as a sore ankle or a sore throat can have deadly affects. Most small injuries will hamper you in one way or another. For example, you will not run normal with a sore ankle, or shoot well with a sore shoulder.
  17. Hopelessness- You may think all is lost. There is, and will always be hope. As long as there is still a sun shining and trees to make oxygen, there will be other survivors in the world.
  18. Rotting Corpses- Rotting corpses spread disease fairly quickly. If you kill a zombie or a companion dies, either bury them if you KNOW you have some time or burn them.
  19. Wildfires- With lightning strikes, accidental fires, and fires started to kill zombies, not to mention no firefighters, there could be fires everywhere. Fires could also destroy cars and release poisons, and also start other fires from their embers. This could potentially destroy entire cities and go on for hundreds or even thousands of miles.
  20. Acid Rain and Acid Snow- Since the world's ozone layer is probably going to melt and nukes and other things will destroy the environment, almost all precipitation will be dangerous. Clean any water that you come across and do NOT eat any snow, no matter what color.
  21. Large Hail- Hail could become much larger during these troubled times, leading to many people being killed or knocked unconscious by it. But, this large rain could also kill many thousands of zombies.
  22. Flooding- I suspect that with little to no upkeep, the 3 Gorges Dam and the Hoover Dam will most likely collapse and flood the surrounding regions with billions of gallons of water. Although minor flooding is slight and not much of a problem, a few gallons of water can rot your wall and allow them to break easily, and about 10 gallons of water can break down your door.
  23. Cannibals- It is possible that some people will not be able to obtain food regularly, so they will hunt other humans and eat them. These people may become extremely dangerous. If you see someone running at you full speed, shoot them with no hesitation.
  24. Insanity- With hopelessness and paranoia, insanity is likely to be coupled and will turn many people into quisling or do suicidal acts.
  25. STD's- With the high likeliness that many women and even girls will sell themselves for supplies, shelter, or currency, there is a chance that paying for these "services" will get you STD's. Use protection and common sense. If a person urinates blood, do not be intimate with them.
  26. Melting Ozone Layer- If as much smoke and carbon dioxide and monoxide are released as I predict, there could be a potential small-scale nuclear summer, with the ozone layer being damaged, possibly beyond repair. This would allow more UV rays into the air, and this would cause massive sunburn and skin cancer.
  27. Slavery- I have recently realized that in the case of an apocalypse, many people will be so shocked or scared that they will remain where they are and not do anything for days or even weeks. If raiders start kidnapping people who they don't want to recruit or eat, they might sell them to other people for whatever use. I consider that slavery, even if they get eaten. It is highly possible that kidnapping and rape will hit all-time highs, and many people may be kidnapped and sold to other groups, such as rouge military factions or gangs.
  28. Toilet Paper- If you must do a No. 2 and are fresh out of baby wipes, which are much better and softer, you're gonna need toilet paper. If you run out of toilet paper, be prepared to use a leaf or your hand. Using your hand can get you seriously sick if you don not clean them properly, leading to pinkeye or vomiting.
  29. Tropical Storms- Since the world will undergo drastic change, tropical storms such as hurricanes and tsunamis MAY get much more powerful and deadly. Also, a nuke that hits water from incorrect coordinates will cause an extremely large tsunami, 500 feet tall and stretching on for miles. NOTHING will survive that collision.
  30. Biological Research Labs- Class 4 bio-labs contain deadly biological agents like anthrax. If bombed they could release deadly viruses.
  31. Boredom- Whether from a few hours of not finding any zombies to kill, weeks without TV, or years without your best friend, always remember to stay vigilant.
  32. Menstrual Cycle- With many females, the menstrual cycle is impossible to disregard. It can cause cramps, general discomfort, bleeding, and irritability. Also, it may require tampons or extra toilet paper to relieve or keep safe.
  33. Rape- Since many people wil have lost their loved ones, they may have completely lost touch with their sanity and decide to run around and violate people's anus'. Treat them in a similar fashion to cannibals.
  34. Gangs- Since the zombie outbreak will virtually annihlate police, gangs will be able to loot, sell, and steal whatever they want from wherever they want without any repurcussions. AVOID ALL MAJOR CITIES, PARTICULARLY NEW YORK CITY, LOS ANGELES, AND CHICAGO, AS THEY ARE 3 MOST POPULATED CITIES IN THE COUNTRY, IN BOTH CIVIVLIANS AND GANSTERS.

Solutions for a few of these problems and more
By Original-Sin

Hostile Survivors and 'Quislings' are going to be a problem where ever you go. They have much more of a reasoning capacity than your average zombie (I hope). The author was right, stick to remote locations to lower your chance of running into it.

Nukes are going to be hard to avoid. Considering there is most likely very special training, not to mention access codes, you have to only worry about the governments of the world using these death-dealers.

Thirst and Hunger will haunt you where ever you go. Keeping well hydrated and fed can mean the difference between life and death. Eat healthy, purify your water, and try to be the best prepared you can be before the invasion hits!

Sleep is one of the many ways your body will recharge. Being in a ZED infested world will make your life a lot more troublesome and harder to live in, sleep is needed as much as water and food. If you do have some friends or family with you, take turns sleeping so the others can be on look-out duty. If you are alone though, find your way to a roof and barricade it as much as possible. Any access points should be closed off and fire-escapes pulled up.
-Fatigue will overcome you due to your increased movement and activity. Many experts believe that naps can actually be damaging to your body, and I believe that naps are not the smartest thing to consider in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Just don't over-exert yourself and get lots of sleep (in a safe location of course).

Weather, you cant predict it.. but you can prepare for it. So do it.

Gas is not going to be as hard to find as others predict it will. So many cars will be abandoned from road jams that you can siphon for the rest of your life. They do have hand-pumps you can use to pump from the gas-stations if you need to.

Morale is hard to deal with. The best thing you can do is try to keep a positive attitude.

Animals and Paranoia, both of these things are minor problems. If your becoming paranoid, your probably starting to slip into the dark depths of insanity. DO NOT, I REPEAT; DO NOT believe that humans are the only animals that can become zombies. We have no evidence to predict or prove this.

The best way to solve these problems, is to be prepared ahead of time. Prepare for the worst, and you'll just be better suited for everything else.

Nosfera2:
About the "Quislings" that will not be a problem for me and in my oppinion it shouldnt be a problem for anyone else because if i run into anyone that is so far gone from reality that they think they're zeds then im gunna put a slug in their forehead just as i would an actual zed because attempting to reason with them would be nothing but a waste of time and even if you could convince to return to reasonable thought i wouldnt want them to be in the group because with them being so close to the edge you never know when they're gunna snap you could just be stealthing your way through the streets looking for supplys and all of a sudden youve got a loon tearing out your windpipe with his teeth as far as im concerned...KLOS(kill loot on site)

The_Chef:
Personal hygeine will still be a concern. There wont be dentists anymore and a serious tooth problem can hamper your ability to function, along with leading to blood poisoning and other nastyness with gum disease and such. Lice can also be a serious problem without regular bathing or shaving.
Rats will most likely start carrying diseases from all the decaying corpses they will eat, which would transfer to fleas, with fleas being another reason to keep clean.
More than likely large fires will start in cities, and without the firefighters to deal with them will only spread. The fires could burn materials that would release toxic fumes, so watch out. Spreading fires could cause the explosion of gase lines, sewer lines, cars and other materials will be a large danger.
Rotting corpses and spoiled perashables will be a serious hazard.
With all the chances of containmenation from the various biological and chemical sorcess drinking open water in an urban area or down stream of any former population area will be a gamble, even after filtration.
It would be best to atleast cover your mouth and nose when near corpses and other decomposing material, if not having some sort of charcol filter to breath through.
If drinking open water in the wild avoid water that is still or perfectly clear. Still water can habour disease and perfectly clear water is most likely contaminated since nothing is able to grow in or near it.
