Make sure you are using proper form. I can easily double my push-up score if I ignore proper form. The description below is nearly word for word from the Army's Field Manual on the Physical Fitness Test.
Start with your hands where they are comfortable for you. Your feet should be together or up to 12 inches apart. You body should form a generally straight line from your shoulders to your ankles, no bending/sagging at the waist. Start in the up position, with your elbows locked straight, then by bending your elbows, lower your body as a single unit (keep back stright), until your upper arms are at least parallel to the ground (called breaking the plane). When pushing yourself back up, raise your body as a single unit, don't bend or sag your back, and push your body up until your arms are fully extended (lock out your elbows). You should keep your neck straight, don't look up, look at the ground or just slightly ahead. Do as many push ups as you can without letting any part of your body (other than hands and feet) touch the ground. You can rest only in the up position. You cannot lift your hands or feet off the ground, but you can slide them into a more comfortable position.
