Raiding is not a long term survival plan Post-SHTF as many of you will agree, but what if those raiders than just go in and pillage, instead protected the people of that settlement or protected multiple settlements in a given area in exchange for supplies? These "warlords" would probably be from rouge military, national guard, police officers, etc. in my opinion these guys rather than being reviled and hated like regular raiders they will in a way be loved or at least respected which would help them get new recruits from the villages that they control. This though would probably start increased conflict with warlords vying for power in a given area sadly. But this would probably if the warlord had enough areas under control and that area was nice and safe this would be the foundation for the first (i say this word quite lightly) "Civilizations". so what do all of you think is it a good idea and how could it work.

So here's what I got.Claymore's/IED's hooked up to a detonator and a road block.When the come creeping up...BOOM.Game set match.Only problem is you well take out there supplies.

It really depends on their intelligence. If the raiders are just a bunch of survivors just looking for supplies and are not hostile, i might as well join them. But if they are just a bunch of reckless motorcycle style gangsters(lol dawn of the dead) then i would have to go lethal, but usually these type of people would be self destructive and end up either killing each other or end up as zombie food.So it really depends on the situation.

i think i would probably be a raider and most likely evry1 else would try to be to simply put you cant take on a horde of zeds or a heavily armed physco unless you have heavy weapons and the best way to get those would be RAIDING. But to stick to the subject i would steer as clear from them as possible and they have probably cleared wherever they came from might as well head there or mooch off of them by letting them kill zeds and i just walk through the dead undead

hello, ladies and gents, and welcome to a fabulous game of find their weakness, where we think up an obstacle that one might encounter post z-day and YOU try to figure out how to solve it. Today's problem is a nasty raider compound that is a fortified overpass on an 4 lane interstate.
Your scouts inform you that there are 25 men in the compound, each armed with at least one semi to full auto weapon, a side arm with at least 3 extra clips, and a melee weapon. It would also appear as though they have some military hardware, including a .50 caliber sniper rifle which they are using on cars that come up the road(they cleared the cars out). They have two vehicles: one civilian Jeep with a mounted 5.56 SAW machine gun in the back, and one bobcat bulldozer. To one side, they have a large suburban community with lots of tall fences and mid sized, two story houses. To the other, they have what was farmland, which has large cornfields that they often go very deep into alone to get corn. their leader(Josh) has light armor designed to stop pistol rounds, a military M4 assault rifle with an aiming laser, a cold steel kukri, a .308 sniper rifle, and a hot temper.

This is an exercise I think is worthwhile, what realistic tactics would you use if you were the raider? This might just help you predict the badguys actions and tactics. Who knows it might actualy work XP

I know there is already a thread like this, but this one is a bit different. read on, you'll see.
raiders: anyone who steals,rapes, or murders after a large scale disaster, post-apocolyptic equivilent to criminals and terrorist Idiot: someone who shoots at other survivors thinking they were zombies(basicly a nicer version of dick cheney) desperado: a person(s) who raid solely for survival. typically not a huge threat, but are still very dangerous. marauder: a person(s) who raids out of malice and/or is very brutal in how they raid. poses a very severe threat and should never be given the white flag. highwaymen: a small raider group of 1-2 people, typically desperadoes. bandits: your classic raider group, 3-20 people, could be very unpredictable and will likely be armed with guns and possible military equipment. likely to be marauders as well. pirates: the worst of the worst. a very large raider group/coalition consisting of 20+ members and will likely have well armed convoys with high possibility of heavy weapons and aircraft. easily the biggest theat to any survivors. it would take a large faction or some seriously hungry zombies to take these guys out. i hope that after z-day(or whatever kills modern society(you know its coming) you can use this list of post-apocolyptic slang to help quickly communicate with your fellow survivors.

I think a big part of the problem is what type of raider you're facing. I think I've come up with a good portion of the types, but please add in any you come up with.
1. Insane, Mad Max like radiers- Not technologically skilled, overwhelm with brute force and basic weapons (bat, axe, knives, handguns & revolvers) They probably wouldn't have good vehicles either. 2. Cult Groups- Undoubtedly, as the death toll rises, the # of cults and religous fanatics will too. More than likely, they will be similar to the Insane raiders, low tech, though they'll probably see martrydom as holy. If they use weapons they would probably use knives and other sharp instruments. They might resort back to gruesome killings/ sacrifices though, so avoid or kill them on sight. 3. Militia Cults- These are the nut jobs (White Supremacists, Neo-Nazi's, and the like) that all live in compounds and are already armed to the teeth. They will pose a serious threat. They will be better armed, have more experience with weapons, and as a rule will be craftier than the other groups. 4. Escaped Convicts- More than likely the prison systems will fail and the convicts will be allowed out or will break out. While many will more than likely scatter, some will gang up and start attacking others. They'll probably just grab whatever is at hand and steal and running vehicles they can find. Many will be the most brutal though. 5. Military- Face it, when the government breaks down, the military will more than likely go with it. While most soldiers are very honorable, some will undoubtedly commandeer some heavy weaponry and go rouge. These are the worst raiders. Armed to the teeth with military hardware, possibly using military vehicles, more than likely will wear armor, and have training in combat and in the equipment they use. Military raiders should definetely be avoided at all costs.

I doubt that will be as easy as anticipated, especially if they are current military turned rogue. good ideas tho, my plan for raiders is to avoid them and not alert them to my presence if at all possible. If I am forced into a situation otherwise, better to go down fighting.

Raiders are a plausible threat,and pose great danger to small groups of poorly armed meek wanderers.They may even been cannabalistic(if food supplies are extremely low).
Basically,if your group consists of no more than 4,then your best choice is to bug out and only fight TO bug out.If larger than 4,then you may have a chance,with a planned attack.You will need good weapons,so raiding a gun store SIMPLY will not do.You may need to make pipe bombs,molotov cocktails,small IED's and Home-made rocket launchers.Mortars also come in handy. Best tactic is too ambush them while they sleep,do what you need to do(evac slaves,kill leader etc) and get out of there.

As said, raiders are the second biggest threat. They are outfitted for human combat, not zombie. They have body armor, full auto weapons, and an unusual amount of supplies. These are the experienced, or very serious ones. I think the key would be keeping a low profile. They only take what they need, so...if you have nothing or they dont see anything.. then they have nothing to take. They are simply people you should avoid at all cost. They're philosephy to survival is, do what ever's nesscery. I have read here somewhere "the world will be a compitition for food, guns, ammo, and whores". this is true, but raiders are less forgiving. Point is try to avoid them, and if you can tell you will be forced to encounter, make the first assualt, because that will be the only edge you will get.

I think that these guys can be dealt with very easily by......Zombies! Simply trick the Z's into attacking the raiders (fresh meat,loud music Etc.etc) and come on now... Zombie are the biggest threat in a post Z world so the raiders would be overwhelmed by the horde easily.

has anyone thought that the bloods and crypts and mafia families and yakuzas will all be raiders? I mean theyve probably already killed heaps of people so they dont really care. they will be the raiders

There is a zombie survival game I played, called Z something or other, abbreviated SCZ, that has factions in which you fight for food, places to stay, while combatting a zombie threat. you can raid and loot and stuff, and you can join a faction just like the raiders, called rebels. neutrals are basically just guys trying to survive, SWAT are government squads dispatched to stop the factions and to remove the zombie threat, but thats basically impossible on the game. To win you kill all the factions, like raiders aim to control as much resources as possible. worth a go for the raider element as well :)

with raiders theres a differnce of how you react to them if i come needing help and you piss me off from the get go im going to hate you if your going to
SHARE your supplies i would help you out. when i find raiders ill offer them shelter food water the hole 9 if they follow my rules and help the colony and most would agree after 3years after the invasion. The first 3year do what u want, but after that almost all food have exp and raiders are desperate just cuz they name says they might be bad doesnt mean the group its self is. just keep that in mind
