The way I figure it is- If you are still alive (and 75% of the local population are either zombies or being eaten by zombies) then once the zombies food source runs out there will be an abundance of temporary resources following an initial overnightRedBeards Survival Plan - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki Zed massacre of the unprepared followed by mass exodus of cities, causing even more panic, death and destruction. Of course if the zombie holocaust is a slow burn and more people decide to "weather the storm" then there will be an immediate rush for supplies causing a temporary shortage for those not prepared. In that case those previously mentioned will be among the first victims followed by everyone else trapped in the city. I suspect supplies will not be as sparse as some think, due to everyone who would be using these supplies is now dead or undead, and has no use for the horded supplies. For the brave and well armed, it is only a matter of finding said supplies and fending off Zeds.... for me the best chance of long term survival is a full time scavenging campaign after a complete annihilation of resource competition.

Part 2: BUG OUT/DIG IN This is the section where you usually detail how you will fortify and defend your current home/office/neighborhood/local bar/warehouse, and prepare your Bug Out Bag... BUT, RedBeards Survival Plan - Zombie Survival & Defense WikiMy home is a single story ranch with (no joke) 20 windows large enough for a full grown man to crawl through. -Not a good place to hide!- My office is just about as useless to fortify as well and my neighbors are old, or weak or full on farm raised redneck country-fried tard-folk, so even attempting to band together with them is an exercise in futility. I do have several B.O.B.'s ready at all times in each (2) vehicle, at my home, and have access to items that supplement these bags at friends and family homes. However, I will bypass details of readying weapons and supplies for a different page. I will start with assuming that Z-day will happen in a major city or where biological testing / nuclear experimentation may happen and/or where frequent travel from outsiders occurs. I reside in Wichita, Kansas. I am not far from several "college towns" and other major cities where said testing/experiments may occur. There is an Air force base as well as major airport in town also. That being said I still would consider Z-day notice a minimum 24hrs before I see a single Life-impaired Brain Sucker. Even considering recent suspicious events happening in Haiti, the Czech Republic and China and the constant movement of military in and out of the local base, there is still a fair chance that I will have enough time to get to my truck, drive home to gather my family, pack a second bag (other than bug out bag), leave with packed and prepared family, go to parents house in country and fortify the area. Secondary choice of safe houses would include my eccentric-millionaire friend's home that is well stocked with weapons, ammo, vehicles and food. Both location's share a few key features.

  1. off the grid back up power supply
  2. independent non-municipal water source through private well
  3. independent non-municipal sewer treatment by lagoom
  4. abundance of weapons and ammo
  5. fireplace as main heat source
  6. multiple vehicles (atvs, trucks, cars, SUVs, tractors, even horses)
  7. barbed/fenced treeline on 3 sides, 1 main entrance only, easily fortified perimeter open flat grounds, multiple buildings, room to add more buildings,
  8. available access to some natural resources (hunting, fishing, wind power, rain gathering, crop growing, live stock raising)
  9. low population density area/ rural area outside Wichita (both sites with in 15 min of home)
  10. quick access to major highways (though far enough away not to be seen easily)

Since a natural barrier by way of tree line exists around the perimeter of both homes (5 acres), I will take advantage of this by adding several interlaced layers of barbed wire (readily available at both sites and local supply store) to fortify it, and if time allows, adding pipe and wire fencing on the internal side followed by digging trenches (using equipment readily available at both sites) and adding concrete filled stacked tires, sandbags and more barbed wire to reinforce walled internal perimeter. Forth and open side I will fence using similar material and procedure, but include a manned gate access for vehicle entry. RedBeards Survival Plan - Zombie Survival & Defense WikiAll 4 corners plus 3 inter-perimeter sites will have guard post towers made by using elevated hunting blinds (used for deer hunting and also readily available at both sites) and fortifying with lumber and sheet metal. Inside the perimeter fence around the initial main HQ (home) I'll also use same techniques to build a perimeter fence using stacked tires filled with concrete, pipe and cable fencing, lumber, sheet metal, barbed wire etc. with 2 main gated entrances to residence. Both Homes are elevated compared to the rest of the terrain providing tactical defensible advantage.
I feel comfortable (having 24hr notice) that I could achieve minimally needed fortification to primary/secondary location and acquire enough supplies to live comfortably for months with a possible community upwards of 25 people.

Back up Location: Vacation Home in Mountains

If it is possible and becomes necessary to evacuate the state I have a family cabin on 3 acres that is large enough for my immediate family plus a small bunker-style shelter on the property as well that we keep stocked with food water hunting supplies, etc. Although the altitude and colder weather in the Rockies will take a bit of getting used to, the location is remote, has it's own water source, gas, solar power and waste disposal and is stocked with plenty of supplies.

Part 3: BEYOND SURVIVING
My take on Z-day may be a bit different than most and therefore my plans reflect as such. I will assume as previously mentioned that Z-day/Ground-Zero /patient 1 is not in my city and/or most likely state. I also assume that once multiple outbreaks occur, quarantine of the infected will also occur fairly quickly and then enforced quarantine by military. Followed by a massive media black out, military policing of cities and Finally the destruction of quarantined areas (nuclear) as last resort to save the remaining uninfected. I figure by these series of events Zombies will come and go, infected will be killed off, anarchy to follow and then the establishment of a dictatorship to restore order.
So really I am looking at short term zombie defense, followed by bartering with local corrupt authorities and then long term E.O.T.W.A.W.K.I. (Book of Eli- style) survival. I imagine Resident Evil 3 mixed with I am Legend and a splash of Mad Max .... and of course we won't get all the infected destroyed or contained. But even if my predicted events don't happen quite in that order, I still figure on 1 major disadvantage for the Zombie Population: reliance on a limited food source + decaying infected corpses means TIME is my greatest weapon. On a long enough time-line the zombie mortality rate will be 100%. So basically I am dealing with post Apocalypse destruction, minimal population, dwindling food sources raiders on every road and in every major city left standing and the occasional zombie outbreak to ice the cake o' death so to speak!

So here is the plan....
Once it becomes obvious that my small community hidden in the country can no longer scavenge for resources, and food found in local (possibly empty) cities and towns we go to Plan B. - Mobile Community. Pack up permanent BOBs and set out in Petrol/greasel/ bio-diesel powered vehicles, risking temporary danger to find a larger community that would welcome skilled survivors such as ourselves or at least scout to the next gas station with fuel, shelter and hopefully a supply or two. Judging by some preliminary research I have done on population density, weather patterns, military base locations and income/resource stats, it looks like heading North/MidWest may be the best bet for mobile survival. With out going into major detail, I plan on trying to scout small cities for more survivors first heading toward Lincoln, Omaha, Sioux Falls. Then West to Bismark, Billings and possibly Helena. Then South to Cheyenne hitting every small town in between but staying off major highways and of course being weary of ambushes and traveling raiders. I am fairly familiar with the whole Midwest and Rocky Mountain region so navigation and terrain are on my side.

For now I figure on after surviving Z-day and the following (possibly nuclear) Apocalypse. Hopefully staying hidden and well fed during the transitional period to a new government, my community will have either flourished or have bugged out to find a new community that we can thrive in. In either case I have nothing but hope for the future as perseverance and preparedness will be our salvation.

RedBeards Survival Plan - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

But just to be on the safe side here is a list of items (and skills) that are fairly common and inexpensive to obtain in today's world.... but will be worth GOLD for bartering after Z-day.

  • Toilet paper (i am hording some right now as I type)
  • Duct Tape
  • Fishing Line
  • Toothbrushes/razors/soap general hygiene products Tylenol/aspirin and other fever reducer/pain killers
  • Tampons
  • condoms
  • Basic medications and medical supplies, bandages, equipment, rubber gloves

  • all other ammo and spent brass casings
  • cold range weapons of any kind
  • trade skills (welding, carpentry, sewing, horse breaking, dog training, hunting, fishing, small engine repair, electrician, auto maintenance, gun repair and maintenance, knife sharpening) if you are needed for a service no one else can do, then you are not expendable and have leverage to trade service for goods!!
