The Remington 870 is a pump action
shotgun first introduced in 1951 it is by far the greatest selling pump action shotgun ever made. Total production is over 10 million in the USA alone http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model-870/model-870-express-synthetic-18inch.aspx

Reliability- The 870 is extremely reliable it is used by police and military around the world its only apparent problem is when you rack it slowly it can double feed.

Cost-The 870 is very cheap for what it is it runs for around 350 dollars for basic models up to $1039 for the "special edition" Wingmaster classic trap model.

Ammo Availability-12 gauge is the most common shotgun cartridge in the country you can get all kinds of different shot the best for anti personnel being 00 buckshot you can also get slugs, less than lethal rounds, and lots of other special purpose rounds so the ammo is very available and fairly cheap.

Power- In 12 gauge this gun is almost always a one shot kill using standard 00 buckshot your sending 9, 32 caliber pellets down range at around 1200 ftps and using a slug depending on brand your sending a 58 caliber bullet down range.

Range- The range of a shotgun isn't like in C.O.D like people not familiar with guns like to think. Realistically a shotgun can reach out 35-50 yards with buckshot depending on brand usually closer to 35 yards. Slugs on the other hand are a hole nother story they can reach out to 100 yards and Remington makes the claim that there "accu tip " slug can reach out to 150 yards accurately, I have never tried them but soon will.

Accessories Ergonomics- The 870 has thousands of accessories ranging from lasers and lights to grips and stocks.... you can put a pistol grip on it for a more close quarters gun, you can mount hundreds of different types of grips to it you can also get magazine tube extensions for a higher capacity shot gun the list go's on and on.

Recoil- The 870 does kick very hard compared to other guns but thanks to stocks like blackhawks compstock that can be reduced to very little felt recoil. http://www.blackhawk.com/product/CompStock-Shotgun-Stock,1155,165.htm
