Rural Farmland

--- view more defensible locations ---
City: None - Cities are arguably the worst place to be during an outbreak. Higher population = more zeds to worry about.

Neighborhood: None - Again, staying as far away from mainstream civilization as possible.

Building or Defensible Location: This requires some advance preparation. Assuming you've got a survival team already prepared (I have), you can begin construction on some kind of shelter pooling talent and financial resources. This can be as rudimentary (basic structure with a palisade) or advanced (actual house designed with zombie defense in mind) as the group wishes.

Attributes: Plenty of tree cover, arable soil, wildlife and water from creeks and nearby ponds.

Pros: Long term sustainability. Even after the outbreak, you can continue with a subsistence farming program factoring in crop growth and animal husbandry. Additionally, if the ponds in the area are stocked with fish, with careful conservation you have a ready food supply. Plenty of lumber in the immediate area in case repairs or barricades are needed. A low indigent population means less zombies to defend against. Additionally, the more out of the way you are located, the lesser the chances of being hit by traveling brigands and looters. One of the primary positives of this locale is that of mobility. If you barricade yourself in a city and run out of food, you have significantly less chances of surviving a move than in a rural area. In the highly unlikely possibility that your area becomes a haven for zeds. You don't have cramped city streets and alleys to navigate, and your visibility isn't hampered by tall buildings.

Cons: Constant vigilance, both with respect to defense and conservation. In a quiet, pastoral venue such as this, it would be easy to become complacent and relaxed, leaving the door wide open for zeds or brigands to attack. Over-usage of natural resources could potentially lead to depletion of the same. No ready structures for immediate move-in. Arguably, a more difficult lifestyle, especially for lifelong city dwellers.

In the case of an outbreak, will you be allowing other survivors to join you here? Absolutely, within reason. The Biblical rule of "If a man shall not work, neither shall he eat," will be in full force, for obvious survival reasons. Survival has more than just physical considerations. There are also emotional and spiritual considerations that are just as important, if not more. I Am Legend by Richard Matheson touches quite poignantly on this. We need contact from other human beings to stay mentally and emotionally fit. Also, each person has their own unique skill set and talent base. Everybody could be potentially invaluable to the group.

I would say that I agree. Get the hell out of the city! Im in California's central valley I would head up to the mountains. If it was winter the zombies would freeze up and couldnt move (corpses no body heat) . Northfork, Yosemite and Oakurst would all work out nicely. Small little communities up there.

I forgot to mention in my last comment, that I had never thought about having to defend myself against brigands as well as the undead. But yeah, unfortunately, some people have that tendancy to prey upon the weak.

I live in the country on a farm, We have alot of supplies, and equipment than people in cities. We know how to grow our own food. Alot of us know how to butcher our own animals. Most rural houses keep larger stocks of food on hand so we dont have to run into town every day. We also have large tractors, trucks, and many have backhoes, and dozers. We also get to know people living in the area. Most of us hunt on regular basis and do physical labor and work long hours.

I would like to fist of all say that you made a very good article, well written and full of insight. Thanks!

I also agree that it would be the best idea to get out of the cities as soon as possible, for a good reason: Even the zombie master himself, George A. Romero, states in his movies (not directly, but it is shown), that the rural areas are able to handle the zombie situation well, with the rural areas becoming safe and secure very quickly. This is not only because of the space and distance that make the zombies advantage of number dissipate, but also that there is a lot more long-term prospect in being able to secure the landscape (farms, etc.). I also feel that the rural areas are quicker to secure because people that live in the rural area would be able to handle themselves better than people from urban areas. This could range from outdoor and survival experience to the simple fact that they own a gun and live in a remote area.

Again, great article.
