The Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman (Also known as the Model 28) is a double action .357 Magnum revolver that is no longer produced by S&W, though you may still be able to find them used. They were produced with 4 or 6 inch barrels from 1954-1986.

This example has a 6 inch barrel and it's been owned by my father for as long as I can remember, and so I've been shooting it for as long as I can remember. Recoil when shooting .38 Specials is negligible, and isn't bad at all when shooting full powered .357 Magnum rounds.
The easily managed recoil is due to this guns large size and weight, the 6 inch version isn't something you'd try to conceal. But it's a great shooter, out of all my families handguns this is probably the most accurate. Or at least it's the easiest to shoot accurately. The rear sight is fully adjustable, though I couldn't tell you if this is a standard option on all Model 28s. And the trigger is pretty good, whether in single or double action mode.

While being a little big to carry on the street for my tastes, this would probably be the handgun I'd grab if I was going into bear or cougar country.
It's a reliable and accurate "never-jammer", and if you ever come across a Model 28/Highway Patrolman don't hesitate to pick it up if you're in the market for a wheelgun.
