SIG SG 552Model: SIG SG 550
The SG 550 series is an excellent assault rifle design from the reputable Swiss company Swiss Arms AG, or SIG. The SG 550 series focuses on modularity, light weight, and excellent accuracy. The rifle has been in production since 1986 and was formally by the military in 1990. Since then, many different variations have been seen. The 5.6mm GP 90 round was developed for the rifle, and is interchangeable with 5.56mm NATO. It uses a gas-operated rotating bolt with a short stroke piston, making it very similar to an AK. Magazines are all proprietary and are made of transparent plastic.

Along with the standard SG 550 assault rifle, there's the 551 carbine, 552 Commando carbine, 553 (more reliable modification of the 552), 550 Sniper with high quality components and a long barrel, and various sporting configurations. The American commercial market introduced the SIG556, which can accept STANAG magazines and be modified with an M4-style buttstock. The SIG522LR is a .22LR semi-automatic rifle that accepts standard AR-15 .22 conversion magazines.

Complexity

The SG 550 series has a good reputation around the world as a very reliable gas-operated weapon. A number of proponents tout its reliability over the AR-15. One problem is that variants other than the 556 and 522LR take proprietary magazines that can be harder to find than AK or STANAG magazines.
