Scenario 14
I (Drewblet) got sick of trying to write my Guerrilla Combat page, so I did this scenario. Them’s the breaks. I think that the best scenario is one that doesn’t relate to you. Time for the scenario:
I prefer to get the details out of the way first, as in the level of outbreak and equipment, before I get into the real business, as in the actual scenario. I, for one, find the other way distracting, and overly difficult to have to deal with. So, the details are:
Level of outbreak:
Using Max Brooks’ method, it’s currently level one, but escalating rapidly.
Zombie type:
Um, erm, em, uh, duhhhhh, Dawn of the Dead, minus residual memories. This means that they slowly meander, and start running once they’ve seen prey. If you’re bitten, it turns into a disease, and kills you, soon reanimating you. If you immediately die from the bites, it still reanimates you. <trivia>I originally wanted to do headcrab zombies. I like them, quite a bit.</trivia> What fun!
Equipment:
Setting:
Here we go!
So, your best friends, Carl (married) and Fred (unmarried), are visiting (you fill in why), and Fred points out several sirens in the distance. After a while, there’s suddenly some shots, and a scream just outside your house, in the back. You all run out, and find the afore mentioned police officer lying in your backyard, just next to your fence.
I’ll fast forward, here. You go upstairs, get your gun, grab your BOB, and have Carl turn on your TV. You hear a news report, see devastation, Carl has a meltdown, and you’re told by a cop to aim for the head. Right. So. Zombies start coming through your neighborhood, an ambulance smashes through your back yard (missing the cop), and a zombie comes through the glass door to your backyard, it’s killed by Fred with a hammer, and this is where you come into play.
You’ve always been the natural leader of any group, so you need to figure out what to do. While you’re planning, Carl gets the shotgun from the dead cop, and the rifle becomes available.
So, you live in a large suburb, south of a city of 12 million. The ambulance is still functional, but the driver is dead, you don’t know how much fuel it has, and you don’t know what he could have in the back. There’s Fred’s rented 2-seat pickup to use (he moved out of town, a while ago.), with an almost full tank (30 mpg, 60 gallons), but Carl took public transport. The nearest police station is slightly less than a kilometer away, to the north-east and the nearest hospital is 1 ½ miles away, to the east. The nearest gun shop is around 4 miles away, to the north-west, which means in the city. The nearest mall is less than a kilometer away.
As I mentioned, Carl is desperate to get back to his wife, who is 16 miles away, back in the city. There’s a military a compound to the south-east, about two day’s worth of driving away, but you have to pass through the city to get there. This also translates into you needing to pass through the city to get to the freeway.
There’s an airport, 3 miles to the west, but no sea port for hundreds of miles. Gas stations are few, and far between once you leave the city. None of you have any training (military, police), and, as far as you know, neither do any of your neighbors. Carl, though, is an avid hunter, and a good shot. You could search your neighbors’ houses, looking for supplies and team members, or you could just leave it. Your neighbors might be panicky and/or hostile, so you need to be careful if you do go searching.
Also, you could just hole up in your house. There’s a hardware store, with tools, supplies, and all sorts of conveniences, about 3 ½ miles to the north west, right on the edge of town.
Goals:
Survive for a month, and keep each of the members of your party alive, if they stay with you. For example, if you let Carl go to his wife, he’s not a party member, anymore. If you plan on picking up some survivors, or police officers, then keep them alive.
Notes:
Technically, I gave you most of the notes in the Setting section, but here’s a couple more.
Hah, I have more notes than I originally thought I would. This scenario, people, hardly relates to me at all, so this isn’t all detailed because it resembles my life. I’m just good at this sort of thing (I hope).
That’s all I have for now. Any suggestions? In a while, I’ll do a continuation of this scenario (A “B” extension, like 10B), so keep a lookout. I need more answers, folks!
And to answer a question of Richboy33lb's, which was "Is the police officer with us, or against us, or did he simply leave?" The police officer is DEAD. This was indicated in the Equipment section, when I said that "a large portion of his head" was missing. So, there. I think RB33Lb had established that, judging by his Scenario answer, but I just thought I'd clarify.
THANK YOU 3DayAsylum! I look forward to your answer.
Now, tell me what you would do.
3DayAsylum: It'll take me a bit before I can type it up, as I'm laden with work at the moment.
Holy crap, can I relate.

I would convince Carl that we will get to his wife, but we will need weapons first. I will tell them then and there we are NOT going to the military outpost. The reason is because on the Dawn of the Dead remake, they accepted anybody, regardless of condition, and it was overrun by the Zack. We will also not go to the police station unless we have a clear path. We will check the ambulance, to make sure it has no dangerous cargo. We will siphon all of the gas from it, then drive towards either the gun store or mall, gun store if it is daylight and mall if it is nighttime. We will then hunker up, check the mall all together, and then barricade the entrances and try to call Carl's pregnant wife. If there is a dial tone and she doesn't answer, I will tell him she is lost. If there is no dial tone, I will tell him to tell me the exact location of his wife. We will check the parking lot for Zack, and then for any vehicles that are big and tough. We will try and get her, if possible. We will then return to the mall and announce over CB radio for any survivors to come to that mall.
3DayAsylum: Wow, just...wow, now people out there, HERE is the perfect example for a scenario setup. As soon as I can, I'll definitely do this one.
I prefer to get the details out of the way first, as in the level of outbreak and equipment, before I get into the real business, as in the actual scenario. I, for one, find the other way distracting, and overly difficult to have to deal with. So, the details are:

I like them, quite a bit.</trivia> What fun!
Equipment:
- A .45 ACP HardBaller. Your personal protection. Ain’t I nice? This only holds (I think) 7 rounds, so conserve ammo. For the total amount of ammo you have, check out the BOB section.
- A 16-round-magazine assault shotgun, I don’t care what kind. You stole it from a dead police officer, with a large portion of his head missing. He was outside of your house. Its magazine is full, but you only found 7 more shells on the officer. This totals to 23 shots.
- A generic Remington hunting rifle, with homemade PVC pipe silencer, and 20X sights. You found it. . . somewhere. I know how to make a PVC silencer, they exist. Please note that this silencer is brand new, and only good for about 300 shots. You can get a real silencer from a dead SWAT or soldier, later. 300 shots is the true rate for a PVC silencer, so don’t doubt me.
- Your BOB which contains the following: Two full days’ worth of food and water; Caffeine pills; Enough water purification tablets for, let’s say, 50 gallons of water; 4 extra clips (28 extra rounds, with a total of 35 rounds) for your Baller; a Gerber brand folding knife; 3 pairs of socks, and 3 of underwear, too. That’s it, you weren’t prepared. I don’t care what you say, you weren’t, and that’s your BOB. So there.
- Oh, and two friends, one married, who wants to get back to his pregnant wife, and one single. Assume you’re a male, and they are both male. They’re both physically fit, except the unmarried one is slightly less muscular. You’re not in the greatest shape. The name of the married one is Carl, and the other is Fred. I’m putting in names, for your (the reader’s) sake.
- Ah, what the heck, a hammer and a screwdriver.

Notes:
Technically, I gave you most of the notes in the Setting section, but here’s a couple more.
- The gun store only has hunting guns and ammunition (Including crossbows, and bolts). It’s really more of a hunting store, but it still has ammunition for your Remington and shotgun. Just don’t expect anything too fancy.
- The pickup is only 2 seat, and there are 3 of you.
- The police station is your best bet for good new weapons.
- Police morale is poor, so they’re likely to just barricade themselves in. Heck, maybe just one will do so, locking his comrades out. A police officer or two would make some good allies, if you could convince them to help you, and if you can trust them
- Following Max Brooks’ advise, as well a common sense, I’d say avoid the hospital, but I kinda disagree with his opinion of malls. Especially when the outbreak has just begun, seeing as the windows, doors, and everything are ramming-resistant and there are those pillars to protect the doors from cars, it would be fairly safe, during class one. The glass is ALWAYS safety glass, and usually bullet proofed. But tread carefully, should you decide to go to the mall. In this case, though, the outbreak occurred during the day, so the mall was open at the time. You figure out why this is a problem. Take a look at my Mall Survival page. No, I don’t take the Zombie Survival Guide very seriously, I just like (or dislike!) some of the points he outlines therein.
- You don’t know how long the power will be up, so that could make the use of filling stations a little difficult.
- Okay, so, the military outpost. You’ve only heard (you don’t know as a fact) that it’s two days away. This means 48 hours. You do, however, know as a fact that it’s there, but you don’t know exact mileage. I’ll do a basic calculation here: On average, let’s say, the speed limit on the freeway you’ll travel on is 70 mph, and it takes two days to reach the outpost at this speed, okay? The outpost is around 48 hours away, so that’s apx. 3,360 (70 * 48) miles away, you follow me? The pickup is 30 mpg, at 60 gallons full tank. So you’ll be out of gas in about 1800 (30 * 60) miles. So, travel 3,360 mi, and you only have to refill once along the way (I recommend three times, depending on the situation), and maybe have to siphon gas from the station(s) you stop at. When you arrive at the outpost, if you stopped only one time, you’ll only have 8 gallons left ([1800 – (3360 – 1800)] / 30). This calculation can be done in your head, if you try. I have no idea what mpg an ambulance would have, so yeah. Who doesn’t like logistics? I bloody LOVE them.
- Carl would be a resource, but he demands that you all go to check on his wife, before anything else. You might be able to give him a talking to, but he might also resist or resent you. Remember, he’s the one who’s accustomed to guns.
