Foodstuff page:
Foods are commonly Identified and are found in a lot of places during the beginning of an outbreak.
Here's some things you might want to look out for while searching.

5 Hour Energy - 5 Hour energy
An item to definitely look out for during Z-Day.These are very common items found in most stores.
It can be used for people when they are sick (not recommended). If you only have access to melee weapons or limited firearms access then give this to the people with the heaviest handheld because it will give them better manpower. In scrounging it can prove useful to carry more items out. The effects last as long as the title is shown (5 hours) and give you a better strength.Warning : This is also considered a medicine effect and cannot be taken as often like other foods and energy drinks.

Beef Jerkey

Beef Jerkey -
A meat item commonly found in stores. It is a snack item but can provide vital nutrients when other resources are low. Averge 30g serving contains about 10-15g of protein, 1g of fat and 0-3g of Carbohydrates. It makes an excellent snack and will be available for a while if unlooted, since its expiration date is about 8 months.

Peanut Butter -
Unless you have food allergies this seems like a pretty good bet. It lasts a long time and is a good source of protein if you're on a meatless diet (either by choice or necessity). One of the main drawback would be the weight of the jars relative to other foodstuff, especially in bulk. Additonally, it is designed for use with a utensil (knife, spoon etc.) without such items a shared jar may help the spread of communicable diseases if everyone's hands are put into it.

Jelly And Jam -
While it is a refridgerated item, It can still be eaten unfrozen. It does spoil within a week after refridgeration is gone but still during that first week it can be a Life or Death. It has nutrients from fruits,Sugars to Keep the cycle going. It also comes in alot of flavors,Grape/Blueberry/Rasberry/Blackberry/Cherry. It is an excellent treat to have during the first events.

Candy - Candy may actually become important after Z-day. For one thing it doesnt spoil for a long time. Second it is very tasty and will have Extremely high value but isnt recomended to be sold unless you have a ton of food. It should be used as last minute food but in Life or Death USE IT!

Cambell's Chunky soup- You can find Chunky soup at just about any store you can find. Chunky soups are non-perishable and they taste great even when not prepared(not heated up). They also have high nutritional value(includes lots of protein and vitamins.)

In general-
Avoid things that require refridgeration. Meats especially can become unsafe within hours when not refridgerated. If you plan on staying on the move, avoid foods that require cooking if at all possible. Fire can attract unwanted humans and zombies alike. If you aren't worried about it, don't worry about it.

Dried, canned and preseved foods are what you want! Just make sure that the packaging is sealed. Avoid cans with dents or holes if possible. Dry goods generally last a long time, but some do not. Expiry dates are conservative, especially on canned and dried goods. Remember, we have a sense of taste and smell for a reason! If it tastes bad, it probably is bad!

Keep in mind what you plan on doing with the food when you choose what to grab, if you have that luxury. If you are scrounging for a settlement, flour and yeast to make bread is a good choice, provided you have a means of transporting it. If you are on the move, not really- that can of soup is probably a better choice.

Junk food may be a mixed blessing. While it usally has little to no nutritional value Sprite or Reese's pieces may benefit you in the short term. First, it could provide a quick burst of sugar-fued energy (beware the later crash!) while you're on the run. Second, such things may end up being one little connection to the world before and could probably be used as a bargaining chip, especially with small children. In the long term, such wasteful food will staive hunger or thirst without adding anything and in a world without regular dentist check-ups sugar can result in a lot of pain.

Honey
Hony simply does not go off. Even without the jar its good for another eterinity. Many people think that honey is bad when its hard, its not. Archeologists have eaten hony from pharophes tombs, 3,500 years old.
Caned food/tins
They last for many years. By the time these go out of date you should have a sustainible farm.
Tooth care.
Not a food but important. Soot from a fire can be used (its better than toothpaste) and if none is availible salt water works as well.
Any Ideas on long term food is appreciated.

Yes, by beloved, I mean the Twinkie. The cream filled pastry, un-opened from the packaging will be good and moist for 20 to 25 years after its been manufactured. Oh, and Honey will virtually last forever if the container is unopened. Not the healthiest, but those both are sure tasty.

J0kk3 About candy.. 1 Feb 18 2011, 6:07 PM EST by Zedshot

One should not underestimate the psychological effect of candy, especially chocolate. On a long hike, even with enough food, something sweet to suck on (lollipops etc) or a piece of chocolate could increase the mood and inspire to make that little extra effort that may save your life.
