Honey
Hony simply does not go off. Even without the jar its good for another eterinity. Many people think that honey is bad when its hard, its not. Archeologists have eaten hony from pharophes tombs, 3,500 years old. Caned food/tins They last for many years. By the time these go out of date you should have a sustainible farm. Tooth care. Not a food but important. Soot from a fire can be used (its better than toothpaste) and if none is availible salt water works as well. Any Ideas on long term food is appreciated.

Yes, by beloved, I mean the Twinkie. The cream filled pastry, un-opened from the packaging will be good and moist for 20 to 25 years after its been manufactured. Oh, and Honey will virtually last forever if the container is unopened. Not the healthiest, but those both are sure tasty.

One should not underestimate the psychological effect of candy, especially chocolate. On a long hike, even with enough food, something sweet to suck on (lollipops etc) or a piece of chocolate could increase the mood and inspire to make that little extra effort that may save your life.

An old commune i have links to beleives in the Eternal Soup as the answer to any nutritional. It's one massive caldroun, over a fire. Everything is put in it, supplimented with grass, barks and so on. The result may nmot be particaularly intresting, adn will get old after a week ro two, but its one fo the best ways to keep a large group of people alive for a long time. Nettles are great for the soup, and more or less anything you find in terms of vegtables or dried foods can be thrown in. Dried apricots in a nettle and stock cube soup is supresisnly nice, and nothing beats the feeling of a hot bowl of soup. The amount of water can be varied depending on the scaricity of food

If MRE's aren't readily available, Top Ramen, as was suggested by BloodSoaked. (Kudos!)
Dried Rice should ALWAYS be available. Salt/Pepper if you're able to keep some. Crackers, as long as they stay sealed should keep you going for awhile. Trail Mix / Packaged Peanuts or Cashews.

Top ramen (or generic brands):
Cheap, around 10 cents per pack. And if unopened it lasts for a while. Dried fruit. Last longer than normal fruit Feel free to add any other foods.

Well, here's some of my ideas and extra information to add for this page. First, the extra info.
Peanut Butter: It was used during the world wars as a form of food aid. High in protein and very good for the average immune system. In a survivor group there would at least be one knife set aside for culinary use. Using the knife to eat and washing the knife in between people's share would take a small while but increase hygiene drastically. The lone survivor could just use his/her hands to eat - assuming they're sanitized correctly. Onwards to food suggestion: Meat: Fresh meat would be a hassle once on the run, however if you do somehow manage to bring a small herd of sheep or cattle with you you definitely wont be sorry. Meat will be a rarity once the jerky runs out and some people will trade a lot to have a piece. (This makes it a possible bargaining item) Feeding some to your own group (non vegetarian) members would come as a great psychological benefit. Lets face it, wouldn't it be a wonder to have it after a few months of peanut butter? With most female animals, with meat comes milk, which is a great source of calcium, and a base ingredient to make complex foods. (as on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs) The major drawback is the need for it to be eaten immediately, unless freezing / refrigeration is available. Tofu: Not much of a shelf life, and unavailable in the long term for most people (as most tofu requires refrigeration) . Tofu is filling, and high in proteins. It can substitute for meat in all but taste. Oats: Not that practical on the go, unless stored. Boiling water may be a problem, though you may eat them raw with the same nutrition. Both ways, it is filling and is one of the main food aid items Canada sends to countries in need. It is an essential famine food and is readily available for those who live in fortresses. (seasons permitting)

Just something to note on the jelly/jam and candy, most, (upwards of 60%) of people will go through a very hard time since they regularly consume such an excess of sugar. Awhile back, I gave up all kinds of excess sugars, but not carbohydrates. The first 3 days were HARD! My sugar withdrawl was baaad, since I ate a lot of sugar beforehand. After a month, and after I had gotten out of my sugar withdrawl, I went back to consuming much less sugar. I suggest all of you try going a week, at least without any kind of execess sugar. If it has sugar .5g or more, dont eat it. You can probably substitute fruits, if your body gives a REALLY bad reaction.

One thing to note: as the united states moves more and more toward easy to cook foods, there are more ready to eat and ready to cook foods available-- ready to cook does not mean it can be eaten. It is exactly what it says ready to cook--- Now when you are done going duh! Realize that after several years working at a grocery i am convinced that the majority of the population cannot read ; at least food packaging, so stick to ready to eat( or be ready to cook)-- that said i also believe that these items will be invaluable to a post z-day survivor-- they are usaully complete meals for for adults, and have long shelf lives(well some do)-- full nutrition without having to dedicate a member of your group to nutrition alone-
