This page will help you with that.

Pistols

Beretta 92 with MagBeretta 92 Series

Beretta mags have mag catch cutouts on BOTH sides of the magazine in. Also note that Beretta mags usually have a thick metal or plastic SLANTED floor plate on the bottom of the mag.

Magazines hold 15-17 rounds.

.40 cal models look the same with mags holding 13-15 rounds.

Browning Hi Power with MagBrowning Hi Power

Magazines are wide bodied and short. 9mm mags hold 13 rounds and 40 calibers 11 rounds.

Magazine only has mag catch cutout on the right side of the housing.

Floor plate (bottom of mag) is usually thin and smooth.

Colt 1911 with MagsColt 1911 Style Pistols

Magazines are straight line, single stacked.
.45 acp mags are smooth with 5 holes (usually) to count the ammo in the magazine. See 1st mag pic near right. Most hold 7-8 rounds.

Sub-.45 caliber mags like 9mm, .40 S&W, etc will have a vertical indention running the length of the housing. See 2nd mag on far right. Most hold 8-9 rounds.

Also note, that the cutout for the magazine catch is only on the right side of the housing.

CZ52 with magCZ52

7,62x25mm Tokarev caliber pistol.

Common surplus pistol that has found it's way to most of the world.

Note the magazine has NO cutouts for the magazine catch. It's because the CZ52 is a "heel" mag release on the bottom of the pistol. Mag holds 8 rounds.

Desert Eagle with magsDesert Eagle

Large framed pistol common in movies and video games. However, this is a large and powerful handgun with impressive firepower.

Mags have counting holes for the number of rounds they carry and are marked with the caliber as well. Usually hold 7-9 rounds.

Mags are easy to identify as they are one of the largest you will find.

Glock 17 with MagGlock

Mags are made of plastic with metal sleeves inside them. Back of mag shows holes with numbers to count rounds with. Right side has indention for mag catch.

On back of mag will be a label for the caliber.

Makarov with MagMakarov

9x18mm Makarov pistol is now commonly found all over the world, especially in eastern europe and asia (chinese copies).

Note: magazine holds 8 rounds and has large cutout to make it easy to see if loaded. It also has NO magazine catch cutout as the Makarov has a "heel" mag release.

Ruger .22LR pistol with magRuger .22LR Pistols

Standard mag is 10 rounds. Large center cutout to see ammo and tab connected to the follower to allow easier loading.

SW 59 series pistol with magSmith & Wesson 59 series Pistols

Shown is 9mm model 59 of this series of pistols, but caliber and numbers are pretty much the same for all models that appear like the picture shown. Very popular at one time with Police, can be found as "trade ins" for many years to come.

Magazines are caliber specific and clearly marked as such. Older mags have thin metal floor plate while newer ones have plastic floor plate like the ones shown here.

9mm mags range from 12-15 rounds. .40 cal mags from 10-13 rounds. .40 cal mags have a "tab" on the front of the mag housing that will not fit into a 9mm gun.

Springfield XD series with magsSpringfield XD series Pistols

Compact model shown in picture. Compact model clips can have plastic grip extension on bottom of the mag. Shown.

XD clips have the magazine catch cutout on the front of the mag - see pic far right.

Rifles

AKM with magAK47

7.62x39mm AK47 or newer version (shown) AKM.

Magazines are usually made from steel if they are European or Russian in origin.

Front of mag "hooks" into place and the rear of the mag locks it into the mag catch.

There are some "waffle" mags that still have the same locking lugs as the steel mags, but the housing is made from plastic.

AR15 M16 with Mags
STANAG

STANAG magazines fit several magazines, including AR-15 type rifles, the L85, FAMAS, and many others.

Mags shown represent many that are available.

1) Military issue alum mag
2) HK SA80 steel mag
3) Lancer Clear plastic mag
4) Magpul CMAG

FN FAL with magFN FAL

One of the most common military arms in the world. Copies called the "Imbel".

Mag holds 20 rounds of .308 ammo.

Usually made from steel and denoted by the rounded and smooth front edges of the mag.

Has little tab in the front and "T" looking cutout in the rear.

HK 91 G3 with magHK 91 or G3

Very common all over the world, the HK G3 military rifle or HK91 civilian version.

Also, copy of this rifle is known as CEMTE.

Note the circular section at top of mag designates this as a G3 mag. If this is blank, it is a CEMTE mag.

I have not confirmed if these mags are interchangeable.

Mags hold 20 rounds.

M1 Carbine with magsM1 Carbine

.30 M1 Carbine is popular light rifle.

Most popular magazine is 15 round short mag (shown in pic) and far right.

30 round magazine shown near right is not as common, but popular for civilians.

M14 with magsM14

Civilian version is M1A and US Army sniper version is M21.

These clips have steel housing and come in 5, 10 & 20 round clips. Picture shows all 3.

Identification is my large square lug on the rear of the clip and square cutout on the front of the clip.

Ruger 10/22 with magRuger 10/22

Popular .22LR light hunting rifle with many aftermarket accessories.

Primary magazine is 10 round "block" mag (far right).
