SIG 556 SBR
***********DISCLAIMER****************
These types of rifles are illegal in many states and require authorization from the ATF to build.
This is my first time dabbling in NFA weapons. So before any of you freak out, I am a C&R holder and this SBR has been registered through the ATF before assembly. It was made from a Sig 556 Pistol, side folding adapter, and a basic AR15 stock.
I have already done a review on the Sig 556 Rifle, so I don't really want to just repeat everything I said in my past review. So, I will only be adding specific information and findings from this SBR as compared to the rifle version.
What is different between the 556 and 556 SBR? The only real differences are the shorter barrel, handguards, and gas system. The SBR version is not quite as smooth of a shooter as the rifle version mainly because of the shorter barrel and lighter weight.
The shorter barrel makes the gun louder, because the gas doesn't have as much time to expand in the barrel as compared to the rifle version. This basically means that a lot of unburnt powder exits the barrel a lot closer to your face.
The shorter gas system means that recoil is a little more abrupt than the rifle version. The gas block is closer to the chamber meaning that gas pressures used for reloading are much higher. It has more of a "snap" to it during the reload process. It is still a nice shooting gun, but there is noticeable difference in recoil.
Accuracy is about the same as the rifle, however the shorter barrel means that the bullets are not traveling as fast, therefore reducing maximum range. This wasn't meant to be a field rifle though, this is strictly a CQB build so it's really a non-issue.
With the stock folded to the side this weapon will easily fit in a backpack. You can travel discreetly with this, and still have plenty of firepower available if needed. Also this weapon CAN be fired with the stock folded to the right, unlike many other weapons with folding stocks.
Function and teardown is exactly the same as the rifle version, so I won't go over all of those steps again.
This SBR has shot about 200 rounds of Prvi M855 ammo. I have not had any malfunctions yet, nor have I tried it with any other brand or type of ammo.
All in all, this setup is great for urban combat. It is very accurate and compact, and can be concealed in a backpack with no effort. The only real drawbacks are slightly stronger recoil compared to the rifle version, and reduced range due to the shorter barrel. One draw back that carries over from the rifle version is current lack of spare parts. Luckily I have a few of these series of rifles things laying around so for me personally it's also a non-issue.
For intended purposes I give this a 4/5 zombie head score.
